Stockings for adults

If you were doing a Christmas stocking for an adult, what sort of thing would you put in?

Mock me if you must, but I have decided that it would be nice for DP and I to do stockings for each other this year (only our 2nd Christmas where we haven't gone to parents so still establishing traditions).

DP's feelings are basically 'Yes ok then.' followed by 'What goes in a stocking?'

In my mind children's stockings have a chocolate orange and colouring pencils and socks and hair bobbles nad little things like that. What's the adult equivalent?

OnlyWantsOne · 21/11/2010 12:29

...socks?
Pants?
satsuma?

TrillianAstra · 21/11/2010 12:34

Hmm, can I do a satsuma and a chocolate orange? Grin

MilkNoSugarPlease · 21/11/2010 12:39

Yes, the real orange counteracts the calories from the chocolate one

HTH :o

TrillianAstra · 21/11/2010 12:41

Good plan!

More suggestions please? Does anyone else do adult stockings? (no children by the way, that's why I have time for this sillyness)

SuePurblybiltByElves · 21/11/2010 12:42

We do this on Christmas eve.

Miniatures Grin. I had an almond one last year, yum.
Little things like a lip gloss or nail varnish
A candle
A funny badge
a chocolate orange, for sure

So for your DP - socks, alcohol, chocolate. Maybe a bargain bin DVD or joke CD? One of those photo calenders you can get done for free. Matey bubble bath. Something from Hawkins bazaar, most men love those polystyrene planes. Voucher for time watching telly/unmentionable sex act.

tulpe · 21/11/2010 12:49

We do stockings for each other too. I think its a lovely tradition. Ideas for contents would be:

books
chocolate/sweets
scarf
jewellery (think Accessorize/Top Shop/H&M as opposed to Tiffany......tis only the stocking afterall not the main event :o )
dvds
cds
wine

jobhuntersrus · 21/11/2010 12:57

I did a stocking for dh one year just as a fun thing to do with the kids. We bought loads of joke stuff to go in it. I think he had a really horrible pair of huge Y fronts, a tool for trimming nasal hair, soap on a rope and other bits of tat from joke shop/poundland.

If he was to do one for me I'd like lots of chocolate in it, smelly bath stuff, socks, knickers, nice pen, note book etc

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 21/11/2010 12:58

I always do my mum one. I put in

A small bottle of wine
Chocolate coins
A few funny books
A puzzle book
Some toiletries

nymphadora · 21/11/2010 13:24

Socks, beer, bath stuff, chocolate coins, orange, sweets

tulpe · 21/11/2010 14:06

love the idea of ginormous Y-fronts.......may have to steal that one for DH this year :o

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 21/11/2010 14:09

We do stockings for the adults as well as the children - great fun. I always put a lottery ticket in any I do (although that depends on your views on the things)

BelligerentGhoul · 21/11/2010 15:00

I do one for dp. It usually has:

a pork pie!
jar of pickle/mustard/chutney or some such;
nice coffee or hot choc or tea;
mini Dorset cereals;
a chocolate orange (because he always asks for one);
some nice choc (to share with me);
something Guiness related;
something small and cheap but useful like a photo-keyring of the girls or a new bookmark or pants or socks or smellies.

thereistheball · 21/11/2010 15:33

I would love a stocking. In mine would be some or all of the following:

  • some plain cards and envelopes from Paperchase with a book of stamps (makes Christmas thank you notes v easy)
  • Molton Brown vitamin lipsaver balm
  • a jar of something foodie and interesting - single-flower honey, artisinal chutney, vanilla bean paste, or similar
  • hand cream, preferably Kiehl's very rich one
  • a frivolous paperback
  • some knickers
  • a bird Christmas tree decoration
  • Olverum bath oil
  • Chanel nail varnish
  • a satsuma and some chocolate coins (because that's the law)

If I were to do one for DH it would have:

  • a paperback
  • some boxer shorts
  • two packs of cards and a book of card games
  • some luxurious shaving foam - maybe from Geo F Trumpers?
  • a miniature or half bottle of really good aged rum
  • some new headphones for his iphone
  • a gentleman's manicure kit (to stop him using my kitchen scissors. It makes me wince every time I catch him)
  • Olverum bath oil if it wasn't turning up in mine (in which case I'd settle for something from Jo Malone :-)
  • a fountain pen and ink cartridges
  • maybe a candle as he likes candle-lit baths
  • and a satsuma and some chocolate coins

Right, just have to print this off now and leave it under his pillow somewhere prominent...

FreudianSlimmery · 21/11/2010 15:47

We haven't done stockings since our first Xmas together when we went mad on spoiling each other :o

If I were getting one for DH I'd put:
Puzzle book
Keyring or wallet
Toothbrush or flannel
Bath stuff
Chocolate and sweets
Socks and boxers

In mine I would probably get/hope for:
Bath stuff
Sweets/chocs
Mini perfume
Earrings
Nail varnish
Hair stuff
Naughty undies :o
Socks

LemonDifficult · 21/11/2010 16:41

DH and I do stockings, we love them!

In DH's so far

Paperbacks x 3
Soil thermometer (not as bad as it sounds - he's into this)
Socks
Shampoo and conditioner
Shower gel
Electric toothbrush
Playing cards
Mug
choc coins
comb
Durex Lube and, er, play ring thing Blush

Still to get:

Small bottle sweet wine or sherry
Boxer shorts
Mustard
Chutney
Nice chocolates
Jotter pad
ITunes voucher
Satsuma

He does one for me that's pretty much the same but girly. Maybe also a key ring and some nice postcards

BelligerentGhoul · 21/11/2010 18:34

The poor man is a carnivore in a house full of veggies - he needs that pork pie once a year! :)

BubbaAndBump · 21/11/2010 18:58

Lots of fab ideas above, but make sure your DH understands what to do as my stocking was empty, empty, empty two years ago :(, when DH hadn't quite grasped the whole stocking thing (despite having done it the year before under instruction!!)

I'm liking the pork pie idea, even though we're all carnivores here :o

TrillianAstra · 21/11/2010 19:03

Empty? Empty? Shock How did that happen? I think he understands he must put presents in it.

Maybe I'll make sure that some of the things I get for him are things I can steal, just in case. Wink

Only kidding - I know he'll do well - or at least try.

BubbaAndBump · 21/11/2010 19:11

It was a woeful situation. My first Christmas with his family and our two DDs (DD2 was about 2 months old) so all a bit stressful - I packed the empty stockings to go up there, I Father Christmas filled DHs and my DDs' ones, I put mine out on my bed for him Father Christmas to fill, but it lay there in the morning exactly as flat as it had been when I put it out the night before(sniffffff).

Wasn't helped by the fact he'd left my Christmas present at home and sent his mum out on Christmas eve to buy me some boring not to my taste at all and identical to her present to me the previous year earrings on Christmas Eve Shock

Honestly, it's a wonder I've been as forgiving as I have!! Hmm

TheGoddessBlossom · 21/11/2010 19:49

DH and I have always doen stockings for each other. This year he can't be bothered doesn't want to. Sad But usually he would get:

Badedas
Nuts
Choc Money
Choc father Christmas
CD
Book
Socks
Smellies
game/gadget

WastingAway · 21/11/2010 20:13

Some things in DH stocking the last couple years since I've had Santa's phone number -

  • Chocolate Orange, or it's not actually Christmas
  • hot sauce
  • Berrocca
  • Star Wars lego keyring
  • moustache scissors and comb
  • nice socks, as opposed to the usual Primark ones
  • badges
TheFallenMadonna · 21/11/2010 20:22

DH will get chocolate coins, apple and satsuma, shaving stuff, a couple of books, a keyring torch, beer and some other stuff I haven't thought of yet.
