13-yr-old DD is causing me such a Christmas headache

I asked her what she wants for Christmas and she said she can't think of anything as she has everything she needs.
But I would like to buy her something lovely that she never even knew she wanted until she opened it. And I can't think what.
I thought of a phone as she has had hers nearly 3 years but she said it works fine and she doesn't need anything fancier. She has an iPod Nano (that she saved up for herself). She has hair straighteners.
A laptop is outside my budget.
Help me please. What might a sweet, ever-so-slightly geeky teenage girl like for Christmas?

why not take her clothes shopping just before christmas? all 13 year old girls love clothes

thisisyesterday · 25/10/2010 20:45

why don't you buy her something like a nice necklace or bracelet?
or take her out for dinner somewhere nice?
new outfit?

OhYouBadBadGhostie · 25/10/2010 20:45

a mini-camcorder? (you can get them for about £60)

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/10/2010 20:46

I would get her an iphone.

TheFallenMadonna · 25/10/2010 20:46

A Flip camcorder?

A fancy camera?

MrsAFlowerpot · 25/10/2010 20:50

A spa day for the two of you together, or her and a friend? lastminute.com do some very reasonably priced ones.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 25/10/2010 20:52

I did the clothes thing for her birthday. She now says she has enough clothes. I know - how can you have enough clothes? I suppose I want her to have a surprise to open on Christmas Day - mini camcorder is a good thought or a necklace (she doesn't really wear bracelets and doesn't have her ears pierced). I think she may be in training to enter an enclosed order of nuns or join an Amish community or something.

A Kindle?

colditz · 25/10/2010 20:56

LOL she sounds like me.

All I ever wanted for christmas were WHSmith vouchers!

Is she bookish? If so, a Kindle is a fab idea.

mememe30 · 25/10/2010 20:58

Oh a kindle is a great idea.

She sounds really nice!!!! She deserves to be spoilt just for not expecting it!!!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 25/10/2010 20:59

Smartphone might be an idea. Or a Kindle. I think technology is probably the way forward. She loves reading, is a bit of a science geek and is quite into music. I think she'd probably enjoy quite a lot of the apps on a smartphone.

Oh she does sound nice (and rather like my own dd in the sweet, slightly geeky, bookish way you describe her!)

Not sure what she likes wearing but my dd's most pizes possession just now is her bright green DMs recently bought at TKMaxx (for £28) also available in pink, red, and yellow (all patent). All her friends love them too.
Also bought in TKMaxx ready for Christmas was a very funky mini hair crimper, just big enough to do small sections. Cost £7.99 and came in a really fab design.

BelligerentGhoul · 25/10/2010 21:09

DD2 is 13 and wrote her Christmas letter last night!

It says:

an electric keyboard like the ones in music;
some chocolate;
a jumper.

Maybe the keyboard would be an idea? The Lord only knows how much they cost or where one buys them though!

Last year we bought her a toasted sandwich maker as a surprise and that went down quite well! :)

BelligerentGhoul · 25/10/2010 21:10

Oh she liked a book light last year too.

If she has her own Nano then I-Tunes credit is always welcome (if not terribly inspirational).

FoundWanting · 25/10/2010 21:50

A telescope?

FoundWanting · 25/10/2010 21:52

A telescope

BelligerentGhoul · 25/10/2010 21:52

I deffo agree with Cat as well - we usually get both our dds new knickers, socks, tights, tooth brush, bubble bath etc and wrap them up for Christmas. They were also v impressed with Starbucks vouchers last year, so we'll do that again this year and perhaps a cinema voucher too.

FoundWanting · 25/10/2010 21:53

I don't know why I posted that twice.

Probably because I really, really wanted one when I was 13.

A nice perfume? The harajuku ones quite popular with the youngsters.

Ariesgirl · 25/10/2010 22:16

She sounds absolutely lovely. Go on a treat, just the two of you.

exexpat · 25/10/2010 22:30

Vouchers or an IOU for some kind of experience for her and a friend (or for you to go too if she wanted) - a play, concert, Go Ape, series of lessons in something?

But I agree the Flip camcorder or similar should also go down well (DS is 12 and several of his friends have them and make really quite sophisticated short films with them).
