13-yr-old DD is causing me such a Christmas headache

I asked her what she wants for Christmas and she said she can't think of anything as she has everything she needs.
But I would like to buy her something lovely that she never even knew she wanted until she opened it. And I can't think what.
I thought of a phone as she has had hers nearly 3 years but she said it works fine and she doesn't need anything fancier. She has an iPod Nano (that she saved up for herself). She has hair straighteners.
A laptop is outside my budget.
Help me please. What might a sweet, ever-so-slightly geeky teenage girl like for Christmas?

A cat, that would have been no1 on my list until I was 17! Which is when I moved out and bought my own Grin

I've got one of the Boden spotty satchels for dd1 (12.5) She saw it in the catalogue a few weeks ago and pointed it out but said she knew it was too expensive. I didn't let on I already have one ready and waiting at the top of my wardrobe Grin

seeker · 26/10/2010 12:16

Grown up scent? I gave dd a Jo Malone sampler set last year when she was just 14. And this year she's getting Diorissimo.

HalloweeseG · 26/10/2010 12:19

iPod touch.

serin · 26/10/2010 23:56

Benefit perfume.

A Leopard gecko.

Wood working tools.
anything from Abercrombie or Hollister.
Fishing rods.
Make up.

Never short of ideas my 13yr old!

Just come back to this thread and so many brilliant ideas - thank you all so much. I will go through carefully and make a list. We were talking yesterday and she said how strange it was that everyone at school was saying what they were getting for Christmas - laptops, iphones etc - as surely the whole point was it should be a surprise as it was no fun otherwise! So no preconsultation allowed, there's a challenge. Smile
Baby, we have two cats already and Serin, the leopard gecko sounds like a Christmas present the cats would love - they already did for poor DD3's stick insects. I love your DD's list - most varied and inventive.
This is a really good thread, hope it will be useful for others too.
And thank you all for the nice comments about DD too - she really is a lovely girl, although she has her moments, obviously!

A new watch?

saffy85 · 27/10/2010 16:13

God she sounds a dream OP, not a nightmare! My 16 year old sister gives me a list of things to choose from each year and there's always LOADS of stuff on there (most of it waaaay out of my budget).

Shoes/trainers/uggs?
DVD boxset?
Really nice make up?
Tickets for a show she would love?
Sponsership for an animal she likes?

BelligerentGhoul · 27/10/2010 16:16

How about a big box of good paints and some canvases?

hocuspontas · 27/10/2010 16:24

Dd3(12) said the same thing yesterday! I said try and think of something so she said a drum kit! Think on Grin

Keyboard suggested is a really good idea.

BelligerentGhoul · 27/10/2010 16:37

Hocus - do you know anything about keyboards? I know nowt and she wants a 'good' one, whatever one of those may be!

Hulababy · 27/10/2010 16:44

Re, a digitial camcorder. The Gadget show recommends the \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kodak-Playsport-Waterproof-Pocket-Abyss/dp/B0033PRPHU\Kodak Playsport}. It can even film underwater. DD is getting one, when I order it(!), for Christmas.

How about a charm bracelet that she can add to? Like the Pandora ones, or one of the other makes such as Amore&Baci, Thomas Sabo, etc.

Digital camera and the Polaroid PoGo sticker photo printer.

Kindle if she likes books.

A netbook is less pricey than a laptop and can do everything a laptop does.

bruffin · 27/10/2010 16:50

DD 13 wants an electric guitar or a flip camcorder

hocuspontas · 27/10/2010 16:52

Bit of a minefield really. Depends on your budget as well. We bought one 6 years ago for £120. We just went for a full-size polyphonic, well-known name (Casio), lots of buttons and sliders(!) and large song-bank because that's what dd1 wanted at the time. I expect most of those are standard anyway now though. The thing I really like about it is that is is really light and can be stored easily, e.g. behind the settee or a door. We didn't bother with a stand until a year later but that got put away and is rarely used.

BelligerentGhoul · 27/10/2010 16:54

Thank you so much. Will google! Do I need to go to a proper music shop? I think there is one in town.

hocuspontas · 27/10/2010 17:15

Argos is good for comparing different specs and they have a large range. I think we got ours from Toys'R'Us in the end. The music shops tended to have the ones at the more expensive end (£300+) and ours was more about playing for fun so we didn't want to spend that much.

jennymac · 27/10/2010 17:25

No ideas but just wanted to say that your dd sounds lovely and unusually unmercenary for a teenager these days!

BelligerentGhoul · 27/10/2010 17:36

Thanks Hocus. My google of Cassio took me to some reasonably priced ones on Argos. Will show dp later when dd isn't hovering around!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 27/10/2010 18:06

Keyboard could be a good idea for DD1 actually. She plays the violin (grade 3) and is planning to do music gcse, she can sing (though won't if she thinks anyone is listening) and read music, but she has never had any piano/keyboard lessons. Would she get much out of a keyboard without formal lessons?

OP posts:
bruffin · 27/10/2010 18:24

DD had piano lessons until she was 10 but now teaches herself via youtube. Get her some beginner books. DD is teaching herself guitar without lessons but goes to guitar club at school
