arghhhhh - DS (13m) swallowed some plastic - will he be ok???

Gave DS (13 months) some calpol before bed as he is teething badly at the moment. I used a nurofen syringe and stupidly let him chew on the syringe while I was doing his nappy.

Suddenly realised he was chewing weirdly and grabbed the syringe but it was too late - he had bitten off a bit of plastic about 8m by 2m.

I think he must have swallowed it as he drank milk afterwards so presumably it would have been washed down? Worrying about the jagged edges. Will he be ok?

Yes, he's my pfb and I've not dealt with babies swallowing stuff they shouldn't before - please can you reassure me he will be ok? Or should I take him to A&E (seems a bit extreme).

I would phone NHS direct for advice, but FWIW I found a craft Easter chick in DS's nappy once when he was under 1yo; I didn't even know he had swallowed it. The little plastic legs were about the same size as you describe, and obviously got thru his system intact and without causing him harm!

try calling nhs direct if you can bear the wait, hope he's ok.

If it went down without a problem I'd imagine it'll come out without one..

If you phone NHS direct they may tell you that you must take him in.
Irresponsible parent warning: I would wait and see how he goes.

They might want to Xray him, long wait in A&E, not much fun with overtired toddler....

Too late - they're phoning me back in 15 minutes.

Oh god, I hope they don't tell me to take him to A&E - DH is away on a stag do so teething DS and I are home alone.

Bugger bugger bugger, why did I let him chew on the damn thing? What a numpty.

don't blame yourself these things happen.

fwiw dd2 has been to a and e twice in her 19 months- both times when dh was away on bloody stag dos so I know how you feel

bollox. they told me to take him in to a&e as they were worried that if the bit of plastic was sharp it could damage his intestines.

just phoned DH who is with a doctor (also on stag do) who said that a&e wouldn't actually do anything unless it was lodged in his throat (which i'd know about) or if he was in pain (which he isn't - he's asleep), so just to keep an eye on him and if/when he wakes up to try and get some stodge down him (banana and yoghurt) to help it through his system.

What do you think? do i listen to nhs direct or doctor friend?

It was the rim bit Fab - at the open end of the bit that the liquid is drawn up into.

I'm an idiot for giving it to him to chew on.

I'd take him to A&E just to be on the safe side. It is a pain but it will help put your mind at rest.

Normally the wait for small children isn't too long. We had to go with ds2 a few weeks ago and were in and out in 1hr 20 mins which I thought was really quick as I had envisaged us being there for hours.

I can't really imagine what A&E will do though - they can't get it out before it gets to his intestines.

my DS swallowed my engagement ring and the advice was the same given by your doctor friend. That was donkey's years ago before NHS redirect

sorry, I should clarify that this happened 26 years ago and I phoned the GP practice who and it was a GP who gave the advice
