She was just packing up in Maths and it gradually went black

good luck!

ditavonteesed · 12/03/2010 14:08

good luck.

Katymac · 12/03/2010 16:54

Just got back

They checked her eyes (again) & still everything is perfectly fine - she just can't see & her eyes weren't tracking anything passing in front of her eyes

While she was having the tests her eyes came back but only to where they were before

I am apparently fussing and I have been told it will go away & it will; so I just have to wait until her further appointment comes through

So can she see now? How scary, poor you and poor dd. Big hugs and hope they get to bottom of it x

crumpette · 12/03/2010 17:13

Katymac hope your DD is OK, this happened to me when I was 16 it all suddenly went black while I was in a bank. I am now absolutely fine, it came back after 4.5 hours but was blurry for around a week. No idea why it happened, terrifying for you and your DD, but hope that she too makes a full recovery.
(I suspect mine was due to very low blood glucose btw)

Lovecat · 12/03/2010 17:15

Katy, whereabouts are you?

I agree with Wannabe, you need to get her seen by Moorfields or another specialist eye hospital.

If it were me (sorry, don't know your circs) I would be parking me and DD in Moorfields casualty dept and not buggering off until they'd given me some definite answers...

If you're in travelling distance of London it could be worth a shot.

And if you're not, you and your DD would be more than welcome to stay over at ours en-route!

Hope your DD is okay in all this - it must be so worrying for you and scary for her.

morningpaper · 12/03/2010 17:18

oh Katy this is so scary for you

I can't believe these kinds of things happen, you must be so stressed

How is your DD? What is she saying about all of this?

IMoveTheStars · 12/03/2010 17:21

hope your DD isn't too scared

Katymac · 12/03/2010 17:23

She has slight double vision, it's all blurry & she has no colour vision this has been happening for about 2 weeks

Today it went completely black for about 6 hours then came back, while it was completely black her pupils weren't following things passing in front of her eyes.

It is apparently stress related but DD says the only stress she has is me being stressed about her eyes

I am unbelievable stressed I cannot accuse DD of lying, I do believe her - she has bumped into enough stuff, but obviously something is wrong whether psychological/stress or organic. TBH I am leaning towards psycohological but what do I know??

OP posts:
1Littleboy1Bigboy · 12/03/2010 17:31

if it psycological her eyes would still track objects - its impossible for eyes to stay still if objects are passed in front of them.

IMoveTheStars · 12/03/2010 17:34

is there any chance you can get to Moorfields?

Katymac · 12/03/2010 17:41

But can Moorfields help if it is psychological?

OP posts:
Buda · 12/03/2010 17:48

I would say that Moorfields could rule out absolutely anything else. Which could mean you would be left with psychological but at least you would have had an excellent second opinion. Hopefully.

morningpaper · 12/03/2010 17:49

I agree with Buda

IMoveTheStars · 12/03/2010 17:51

me too

cocolepew · 12/03/2010 17:55

How scary, I hope you get some answers. I agree with Buda too.

Hi there - so sorry this is still going on.

On an earlier thread I posted a link to the Moorfields advice line. Did you ever call it?

I really really would.

Sorry, Dh decided to take us all out for a meal - yummy

I rang Moorfields (the number given here) who said we couldn't just turn up we needed a referral from our GP - the person I spoke to said if the local hospital said her eyes were fine then they were as it was a good hospital

She is OK - before this I would have said she was quite volatile but recently she has been an a very even keel (I have to be honest it is much easier to deal with despite it worrying the hell out of me)

"They checked her eyes (again) & still everything is perfectly fine - she just can't see & her eyes weren't tracking anything passing in front of her eyes"

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA [HMM]

Since when is everything perfectly fine if you 'just can't see' and your eyes don't track anything passing in front of your eyes?

What these people need to be explicitly clear about with you, is that regardless of origin, it is NOT perfectly normal to have vision disturbance or loss, and it is NOT an over-reaction to want further investigation if a deterioration in eyesight becomes NO eyesight.

I used to work on a breast surgery ward, and saw first-hand how nurses and care assistants and surgeons went about their daily business, forgetting that for each of these women this was their world turning upside down, and this was new.

These people need to remember that just because they've seen this or something similar before, you haven't, your DD hasn't, and whether psychological or physical, it is REAL.

lou031205 · 12/03/2010 20:18

Sorry, Rant

arolf · 12/03/2010 20:30

you could try the western eye hosp in west london, don't need a referral, there's an a + e there

www.imperial.nhs.uk/patients/emergency/index.htm

A&E for eye care
Western Eye Hospital has a dedicated A&E department for emergency eye care, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

best of luck!

Katymac · 12/03/2010 20:30

Thanks Lou - that is just the way I feel.

I said today that I didn't know how to treat her do I:
Sympathise
Jolly her along
Be very firm/slightly hard
Accuse her of doing it to herself (which is what the consultant said on Wednesday)

They said be supportive as she must be frightened.....I said so was I

Katymac · 12/03/2010 20:50

Thanks arolf but it (apparently) no longer an emergency - she has seen the hospital 4 times since it happened

I'm off to bed & I'm going to see my mum & dad in the am
