How much Calpol is too much for a 6 month old?

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 19:02

My 6 month old's just got over mild Chicken Pox a couple of weeks ago caught from his 2.5 year old sister.

Then we had mild Carbon Monoxide poisoning after a leak from our woodburner so he's had a chesty cough for weeks

now he's got a very snuffly, mucus-y common cold on top of it which is affecting his breastfeeding slightly as he's only feeding for 5-10 mins every couple of hours, though plenty of wet nappies (just no poops).

He's also teething badly.

So, I'm dosing him with Calpol or own brand equivalents one 5ml spoonful about twice-three times a day, plus he has a little on his teether 3- 4 times a day.

This stuff really does knock him for six and he's getting increasingly lethargic, those he's still alert and responsive in the brief respite when the teething pain abates, but does anyone know if this is too much medicine? NHS Direct is too long-winded.

Thanks guys

kingbeat23 I'm not worried, there's a lot of paranoid people on here, I take it all with a pinch of salt (actually Granny says that's good for teething!)

Amazing what a hornet's nest a little misunderstanding and laziness at not reading a whole thread or OP can cause.

milkmonster, why are you provocatively discussing your baby health.you know your posts are alarming

go see gp get yourself and baby checked over

Missus84 · 08/01/2010 20:03

milkmonster - if you just let us know what medicines you are giving and how long you have been giving them for, then if no problem you'll put everyone's minds at rest.

Lulumama · 08/01/2010 20:03

oh, you are just playing games now

you're op and title mentioned CALPOL and EQUIVALENTS.

what the hell were we supposed to thinkg?

you have a potentially very unwell lethargic baby and cannot be arsed calling for help?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 08/01/2010 20:04

okay milkmonster

what is it that we are misunderstanding?

Do you want to retype your OP here so that we can try again?

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 20:04

'Amazing what a hornet's nest a little misunderstanding and laziness at not reading a whole thread or OP can cause'

No Milkmonster that's just it, it is you that doesn't seem to realise what you've actually put in your thread title, thread or your original post!

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 20:04

Lulumama I'm not mentioning brand names unless I'm paid to, suffice to say there's no paracetomol or ibuprofen inherent and the medicine is specifically suited for cough and cold symptoms, but not fever, not that he has a fever, and the 'lethargy' is probably simply over-tiredness, given he's up all nigtyh with teething. Crickey, must have some really over-anxious parents online tonigth!

BooHooo · 08/01/2010 20:04

OMG you are insane, your poor poor baby

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 20:05

Ok can you just list the ingredients of the medicine you are using as per the bottle label.

mrsjuan · 08/01/2010 20:05

Milk monster - what is it exactly that you want to know?

I'm sure you could have got through the 'long windedness' of NHS direct by now rather than sitting here being very strange.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 08/01/2010 20:06

I have read the whole thread.

You don't need to mention brand names, just the active ingredient. It must have something it in or you wouldn't be worried enough to start the thread.

You must see that by calling it calpol and equivalents, the suggestion was you were giving paracetamol. If you weren't worried why start the thread?

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 20:08

I'll get more constructive advice off
Dadsnet I think minus the deliberate scaremongering and over-anxiousness. The baby's not being overdosed according to the label, but somne of you think you know better than that professional advice, so whatever you say is not going to be given any respect by me, sorry.

QOFEisinatizz · 08/01/2010 20:08

Well if there is no pain reliever in the medication why on earth are you putting it on his teether?

You need to get him some medical attention ASAP.

It seems you don't really know what medication you are giving to your child or how much is appropriate.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 20:08

Then why start the bloody thread!

Lulumama · 08/01/2010 20:09

you mentioned calpol!! FFS

are you giving cough medicine? it;s not that stuff taht makes them sleepy is it, that is now not meant to be given to the under 6s??

what is the point of giving medicine for teething without pain relief in it?>

how can anyone tell you if it is too much, if you wont; say what it is>

and wh mention calpol?>
and ask, if you thikn we are all neurotic>>>

am seriosuly concerned for your baby

milkmonster you come across negligent.time to type about on mn,no time to query baby health with OOH gp or nhs direct

your vague obtuse responses about the baby that's why posters are aghast/worried

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 20:09

This is the weirdest thread I've ever seen on mumsnet.

Either you are not of sound mind or you think this is funny, and it's really not.

Lulumama · 08/01/2010 20:11

Milkmonster, can you not understand, why if you mention calpol, teething pain, fever, lethargy, own brand euqivalents, then say you are not giving anything with pain relief in it, and then say you are not mentioning brand names, but mention calpol, that everyone is worred and confused.????

your baby is increassingly lethargic and you are giving unspecified medicines that seem to bear no realtion to the symptoms you mention

so why post> if you think we are all neurotic

this is not about respect, but about the health of a baby

SkipToMyLou · 08/01/2010 20:11

OK, hiding the thread, which is a first for me.

Missus84 · 08/01/2010 20:11

If this is a wind up then it's a really inappropriate subject.

If not then see a doctor.
