How much Calpol is too much for a 6 month old?

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 19:02

My 6 month old's just got over mild Chicken Pox a couple of weeks ago caught from his 2.5 year old sister.

Then we had mild Carbon Monoxide poisoning after a leak from our woodburner so he's had a chesty cough for weeks

now he's got a very snuffly, mucus-y common cold on top of it which is affecting his breastfeeding slightly as he's only feeding for 5-10 mins every couple of hours, though plenty of wet nappies (just no poops).

He's also teething badly.

So, I'm dosing him with Calpol or own brand equivalents one 5ml spoonful about twice-three times a day, plus he has a little on his teether 3- 4 times a day.

This stuff really does knock him for six and he's getting increasingly lethargic, those he's still alert and responsive in the brief respite when the teething pain abates, but does anyone know if this is too much medicine? NHS Direct is too long-winded.

Thanks guys

If you give CALPOL then OWN BRAND EQUIVALENT it does not mean you can give the full dose of each.

You need to sort this out.

LedodgyChristmasjumper Er, thanks for that. We've already been screened and cleared, the haemooglobins are recovered!

If you talk about "calpol and own brand equivalents" but the own brand item hasn't got paracetamol in it then it isn't an equivalent.

If your ds really is lethargic and you are genuine and wanted advice then I would suggest that since most people on here have advised that you cease your current medicinal dosage and take your baby to be checked by a doctor then it would be prudent to stop being argumentative to every reply you have had on this thread, turn off your computer and go and tend to your clearly poorly baby.

Otherwise I think I stand by my original post questioning the authenticity of the OP.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 08/01/2010 19:54

Milkmonster I think that you are possibly ill, the carbon monoxide thing is a worry.

Do YOU feel sleepy or lethargic?

Honeypeckle · 08/01/2010 19:55

Something's not right here. You need to get your baby checked out ASAP. Who care's if NHS is too long winded if it save's your baby's life!

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 19:55

Freak? I didn't swear? Are you on a wind up?

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 19:55

Ok but I still think you need to re-read this thread and see if you sound like a sane person because at the moment you honestly don't.

Lulumama · 08/01/2010 19:55

oh look, i am invisible

What a peice of fiction that is! Where does it suggest I've given full doses of varying brands? Nowhere.

Yes, that's par for the course with two babiues under 2.5!

CO is only effective at ignition and burn statge, not several weeks after once the source is eradicated, dont worry!

Milkmonster: I think people are trying to be helpful based on the information you have given. If my children are really under the weather then I give paracetomol / nurofen based shop equivalents either sainsburys or Boots. However the dosage amounts do vary from brand to brand.

Do what most have suggested and call the out of hours doctor if your 6 month old is worse. They will give you some guidance based on the medicines you don't feel able to name.

Please call the doctor. The worst that can happen is they find you a concerned parent who has not wasted their time.

As the baby is so young they will treat you as a priority.

kingbeat23 · 08/01/2010 19:59

ok milkmonster - I hope that this is a real thread and not some kind of wind up. If it is real and you are worried, then i apologise in advance for saying that it might not.

I truly think that yes, you are over using Calpol - or equivilant - too much. I only give 2.5 ml and never on a teether...I've never heard of doing that and wouldn't bother doing it in the first place, too much association and habit forming in my opinion...and that's all it is, an opinion.

Go to your GP, just to check it out...you wont be wasting their time, it's what they are there for. Rather you get told that your DC is fine, than not to go and be told that he isn't.

If you are worried n the night call NHS direct, sometimes annoying for the long wait, but I did it last night, and it was advice well received.

Can you raise the matress he is slepping on at one end?? I put blankets under the matress at one end for my DD and it did wonders for the nighttime snuffles. Karvol and a vapour rub or menthol on the sheets under her too. Steamy baths as well.

Hope this helps....try not to get too upset by comments on here, it's only a forum and you only get opinions for questions asked.

I have reported you too as I am worried about your baby.

displayuntilbestbefore · 08/01/2010 20:00

Lethargic baby,
given a veritable cocktail of various paracetamol and non-paracetamol containing products at frequent intervals,
previously had Carbon monoxide poisoning...
I can think of better places to be than sitting at computer arguing on a web forum.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 20:00

Copied from the BBC website.

'Some symptoms can occur a few days or even months after exposure to carbon monoxide. These may include confusion, loss of memory and problems with coordination.'

Lulumama · 08/01/2010 20:02

milmonster, with the best wll in the world, you are typing responses to others, but not to me, and i woul really liek to know what medicines you are giving
