How much Calpol is too much for a 6 month old?

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 19:02

My 6 month old's just got over mild Chicken Pox a couple of weeks ago caught from his 2.5 year old sister.

Then we had mild Carbon Monoxide poisoning after a leak from our woodburner so he's had a chesty cough for weeks

now he's got a very snuffly, mucus-y common cold on top of it which is affecting his breastfeeding slightly as he's only feeding for 5-10 mins every couple of hours, though plenty of wet nappies (just no poops).

He's also teething badly.

So, I'm dosing him with Calpol or own brand equivalents one 5ml spoonful about twice-three times a day, plus he has a little on his teether 3- 4 times a day.

This stuff really does knock him for six and he's getting increasingly lethargic, those he's still alert and responsive in the brief respite when the teething pain abates, but does anyone know if this is too much medicine? NHS Direct is too long-winded.

Thanks guys

If you are now saying your ds has a temp which keeps coming back then you need to get him checked by a gp not just keep giving him calpol.
Giving it on a teether won't do his teeth much good as it's too sticky and another unnecessary dose of paracetamol that he's sucking on.

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 19:23

No - you keep ignoring are advice and sticking to what it says on the packet! So why ask?

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 19:24

our

BooHooo · 08/01/2010 19:24

I don't understand. You didn't say he had a temp in your OP. You are exceeding the dose from your OP, and it is not recommended that you give the max dose for colds/ coughs anyway. It is really for high Temps/ ear infection pain at this age ideally.

It sounds like he has been really unwell lately with the CP/ CM poisoning and he is so young. If he is lethargic and not feeding well I strongly recommend you take him to the GP asap.

Your OP has concerned me actually.

"often our individual experiences eclipse that of the recommened advice "

erm,no, not in the case of giving a baby medication
Far better to trust the medicine guide than tweak doses according to what you think is best.

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 19:25

Half a ml on a teether 3-4 times a day = 2mls. Other dosing 2-3 times a day= Total Dosing UNDER the recommended advice,

Okay, you clearly think you know best but imo you are not doing the best for your baby.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 19:27

Give hom the calpol on a spoon twice- three times a day like yu are doing until he feels better. DO NOT put it on his teether, not only are you not knowing how much he has ingested then but it is also bad for his teeth. Just because it's sugar free does not mean it can't damage the teeth or soon to be teeth. Buy some anbesol and stick that on his gums instead.

scottishmummy · 08/01/2010 19:27

why are you purposefully arguing with posters.bigger question is why you seem so reliant upon across counter medications

displayuntilbestbefore · 08/01/2010 19:27

You say your dosing is under the maximum dose advised but it is definitely OVER the dose required for the symptoms you say he has.
Therefore, overdosing your particular baby who has no need to be given that amount of calpol that many times a day.
Have to hide this thread now as feeling quite anxious about how you are interpreting the dosing instructions on the packet.

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 19:28

No, I said he has a higher temperature, NOT a fever, and the temp is NOT within grounds for concern.

As I keep repeating, the medicine is not neccessarily CALPOL BRAND but own brands SPECIFICALLY suitable for symptoms of coughs and colds, so that the dosing IS AS PER ADVICE.

Blimey....wax in ears anyone?

BooHooo · 08/01/2010 19:28

But why are you giving him so much calpol for a cold with no fever? You would be better off with a humidifier and some karvol in a tissue in the room.

How are you sure it is viral and not an actual bacterial infection if he hasn't seen a GP?

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 19:29

Oh do f* off.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 19:29

Milkmonster I think we are all a bit that you are rubbing calpol or generic brand paracetemol on his teether which is unnecessary when there are preparations available for teething.

Missus84 · 08/01/2010 19:30

You're probably nearing the max for daily dosage - how many days has been on it?

I don't think the Calpol will be having any affect on his chesty cough or snuffliness though.

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 19:30

scottishmummy : bigger question is why you seem so reliant upon across counter medications

As opposed to? Sorry but Homeopathy or Chanting just doesn't do it for me

I thought that Calpol (or similar) should only be used for a few days. Doesn't it say on the bottle something like 'if symptoms persist consult your GP?'.

It is paracetemol-based and not good for anyone over a period of time. Can have damaging effects on the liver.

Please stop giving your child over the counter medicine willy-nilly and see your GP/HV for advice, ou could be causing long-term damage for short-term peace and quiet.

It is still paracetomol which can cause kidney damage if over dosed which YOU ARE DOING if you h ave been doing this for days.

I don't know you bothered posting. Did you want confirmation it was okay to give your baby medicine he doesn't need?

BooHooo · 08/01/2010 19:31

If he has no temp why are you giving him so much medicine MM?

scottishmummy · 08/01/2010 19:32

milkmonster you are just pissing around.dont know why but you are. i mistakenly answered what i though was genuine query. this isnt

BooHooo · 08/01/2010 19:32

This is so odd

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 08/01/2010 19:32

FFS at homeopathy and chanting, no you keep giving your baby drugs he doesn't need.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/01/2010 19:34

If the snotty nose is affecting his bf try saline drops and a nasal aspirator. It will be more effective than calpol or generic brand.

milkmonster · 08/01/2010 19:34

Are people deliberately still using the word CALPOL as some soert of brand incentive, are you getting paid to keep mention it? !

The medicine I've been using for several hours is specifically for symptoms of cougs and colds and the dosage is within the limits, even with the teether, what I'm asking for is views on whtehr anyone else has had similar experience of symptoms given , I'm quite confident the dosage is correct as it's PER THE ADVICE.
