How many breaths per minute is normal for a 5 1/2 week old?

When I was researching when DS had bronchiolitis it said no more than 60. Have you tried to count? Its a fucking impossibility .

Are you worrying? What do you think is wrong?

I think if you're worried about a 5 1/2 week olds' breathing, you should be at A+E ...

his chest went in about 80 times.
we were in hosp yest.

Yep, back to A&E. DS2 was roughy 60pm and his oxygen sats were 88.

Sorry to hear this Mel, but you must go back asap.

Just got back from the hospital with Freddie, I went to the Gp earlier and he they sent us in an ambulance, very scary. Gp wanted the pediatrition to check him over as his heart rate and breathing were a bit fast. Plus he could hear crackles in his chest and he had a temp. Oh and a rash on chest and shoulders.
It's prob a virus (isn't it always?).
He's also had green poos for the last 2 weeks, since he's had the cough/cold. If his nappies are still not right in another week they'll prob test for lactose intolerance. I hope the poos are green because of the virus and not that he's having cold symptoms cos he's intolerant iyswim.

at the gps it was fast, but at hosp not so fast. typical

they said theres nothing they can do there that i cant do at home

We went with those symptoms plus projectile vomiting and ds was 16 weeks. We were kept in.

You need to go back and IMO be kept in.

Did they do his oxygen sats with the monitor that goes on his toe?

he's been pv on and off the last week after coughing, not been well for 2 weeks really which is why gp sent us in

You can see them on the monitor. Anything less than 95 and they will keep them in, thats what they said at the 2 hospitals we were sent to. Also in an ambulance with oxygen.

My dd was like this for weeks, we listened to the dr who said just a virus and she ended up seriously ill with pneumonia.

what does oxygen sats mean? ?(thankfully i'm not expert in all this)

I'm not sure what it actually means, something to do with their oxygen intake ie if its less than 95 they may need to be admitted and given oxygen through a mask. DS was at 88, which is a lot higher than DD who was almost at deaths door and had to be ventilated.

Hopefully someone will be along who knows or maybe do a quick google. It should be the first thing they check when presenting with the symptoms Freddie has.

To be honest as a respiratory therapist in a hosptial who did cardiac surgery on patients as young as a week old... I have taken children off oxygen at a level of 78 percent with doctors orders. There are certain conditions with babies that the low saturation is not a for certain indicator of death.

levels of o2 depend on age and health.
normal should be 90-100
panic should be below 87 however certain conditions permit lower levels. Talk with the doctors or health care people

He's calm and settled now. asleep on me. dd is being dropped back any minute.

if he speeds up again, we'll go.

in fact we have to collect prescriptions from doctors later, so i could talk to doctor then.

Fingers crossed he is ok, but please if he gets any faster go in. Do you know the signs to look for that he is working too hard to breathe? In case you don't they are;

The dip between his collar bones noticeably going in and out as he breathes

His stomach muscles where his ribs are working very hard so that you can see his stomach going in and out, most concerning if it doing that rapidly.

Just spoke to dh and he said that the oxygen sat results was 99.

Oh well that is really good then. DS2 was released with his at 95, so you can take some reassurance from that hopefully.
