Horrific bleeding nappy rash - advice please

My DS 12 months was diagnosed with an upper repsiratory tract viral infection last Tuesday - he'd had it for a few days. He developed diarrhoea by Wednesday, we went off on holiday on Thursday morning. Friday I called NHS 24 as his nappy rash was so bad. Basically they couldn't do much.

Saturday we took him to A&E and they gave us Timidine (sp?) which he has had before.
Upon returning home I have left him bum out as much as I can - but with diarrhoea it is not so easy to do! I have been applying the timidine, vaseline and nappy changing as much as I can. Took him back to GP yesterday - who gave me dietry advice for him.

But his wee bum/scrotum is red raw and bleeding. Anyone got any other advice or helpful hints for me please? I handed in 2 stool samples today and will get results Friday.

Metanium - putty-like ointment but very good. Try not to get it on your clothes though - it will stain.

i also used to find metanium good,leave nappy off as much as poossible difficult with diarrhoea I know and dry with hairdryer on cool after nappy change to make sure completely dry.My ds used to love this,very funny and cheered him up no end!Also check that its not a bout of thrush or fungal infection which can often happen if they have had antibiotics

what is it he has been prescribed , is it an antifungal or antibiotic ? try to leave the nappy off as much as possible and bathe it with lukewarm camomile tea

green vaseline very soothing

i used to use it mixed with sudocrem

Old midwive's trick - paint on beaten eggwhite - as it dries it forms a second skin to allow the skin beneath to heal. You can then put a nappy back on for a bit - pref timed to the worst of the diarhhoea. Sympathy for you - sounds awful...

Put him in a basin of warm water with a little bread soda in it for a few mins. I found Bepanthen great, when I ran out of that I put Manuka honey on, did the trick. hth

Another vote for Metanium - I got the advice to use it from MN and it cured DD's horrible nappy rash when sudocreme etc were useless.

Poor thing, my DD had nappy rash like this and it was so sore. Keep his skin as clean and dry as possible. Don't use wipes, use soft cotton wool and lukewarm water, put a towel under his bum and dribble the water over him if he can't stand being touched (DD couldn't and this was the only way I could clean her). As others say make sure he is totally dry and then use metanium - I found this was the only thing that worked. You need to follow its instructions and use it sparingly though, it should be applied thinly so that it dries, not left as a thick paste on his skin. If you can't leave his nappy off then change it as often as you can, even a wee can sting rash like this dreadfully. Also I found a bath every day - lukewarm and nothing added to it, just the water - helped to clean her skin and once she lowered herself into it, the water seemed soothing.

metanium's good. also calendula cream is very soothing and healing - you can mix it with sudocrem which has always helped my two.

if by any chance you're an extended bf'er then breast milk helps with most infections etc.

Use the shower head with gently running water to help. Also we used to mix the metanium with a little sudacreme which helped it spread more easily.

Agree to check that it is not thrush etc

Poor wee thing. Another vote for metanium, it is the only thing that really seems to heal bad nappy rash. I think it must sting though when it first goes on judging by DD's reaction, so be prepared for some weeping and wailing when you apply it .

p.s. it is not located with the Sudocreme and nappy rash ointments (at least it isn't in our Boots) it is in the Children's Health section.

when ds had this i was advised by the hospital to clean him with cottn wool and baby oil and not use water at all. It really helped as water was just too abrasive. Your poor ds

Thanks all. I'll buy some metanium tomorrow. He is screeching like a banshee every nappy change anyway - must hurt like hell.

Still got diarrhoea - quite sleepy today. His bum looks a wee bit better but I have just bought the metanium so shall apply it when he wakens up. Thanks for asking.

I second the egg white trick.

Another one is put a couple of handlfuls of oats in the foot of some cut up tights. Put them under the hot tap in the bath and run a bath. Pop your LO in and let them play. You will find the oat milkinthe bath will work wonders on the nappy rashand it is very naturel.

It's great for keeping Mum's skin soft too.

Our GP gave us metanium and canestan but said the most important thing was to leave the nappy off and allow the area to air.

terrible - I have only used the metanium once as he screamed like a banshee and I am scared of hurting him more. I am getting really wooried now as he looks pale and he is just passing rusty water - it doesn not seem to be improving. Should get the results of the stool samples tomorrow aft. I shall try the egg white and see if it helps. I have been putting on heaps of vaseline to try to form a barrier but his bum is still red raw and bleeding. It goes from slightly better to horrific again My poor wee man.

My DS is 2 and still ets really nasty Nappy Rash, he bleeds and gets realy big sores.
He refuses to have cream on so i put him in a salt water bath and then make sure he is dried well. Sine he hates having cream rubbed on i put the cream in his nappy then put the nappy on.

Poor little mite. I hope it gets better soon, do go back to another gp if it doesn't DS was prescribed some stuff, i forget what its called but it was in a pump spray bottle and we had to spray it on after every nappy change, its created a second skin.

Poor little thing, is he drinking plenty? The rusty coloured water doesn't sound good. Have you got any Dioralyte? I've given DD this when she's been poorly (bronchiolitis) and vomiting and it does keep their fluids up.
