DD is having terrible smelly night sweats

DD is having terrible night sweats for about the first 3 hours she goes to sleep, and the sweat has a very strange smell, not a bo smell like a sweet smell. Her hair is completely soaking.

She is laid upstairs with just a nightie on, no covers and windows on the lock, it is not hot here but her hair is still wringing wet with sweat. Any experience of this, i am worrying over nothing?

i think night sweating can be linked to hypoglycemia - low blood sugar. I would definitely get it checked out.

It can be a sign of diabetes get it checked to rule it out.

I think that goes for the sweet smell too?

Has she been unwell at all, tired or more thirsty than usual?

How old is she?

Actually I know someone else who had that - in his case it was TB but there is a list of things it can be here

Got me worried now, DS often sweats a lot at night and I would say it was quite sweet smelling.

night sweats can be nothing but can be a warning of something else, def worth checking out.

She is 4, she has been having a lot of trouble with her tummy the last 4 weeks, dont know if that could be linked

giddykipper - some people do - DH does but then he drinks too much!

mummytopebs - sounds like she could have a bug - if she has her main meal in the evening and has a tummy bug the stomach will be trying to get rid of whatever is causing her problems quickly and that will cause sweating. Take her to the GP to rule out anything serious but it's most likely a transient problem you may never identify and won't hurt her.

tummy pain can be a sign of diabetes in dc too - you need to get her checked out.

I agree get her to the Gp to rule it out.

Symptoms that are more typical for children include:

tummy pains
headaches
behaviour problems.

Doctors should consider the possibility of diabetes in any child who has an otherwise unexplained history of illness or tummy pains for a few weeks.

If diabetes is diagnosed, your child should be referred to the regional specialist in childhood diabetes.

Car girl that is interesting as she is currently been seen for emotional and social development. We go back to the gp on monday cos we have been trialing no milk to see if that improves her stomach problems, so will def mention diabetes cos i didnt mention the night sweats last week cos it had been hot last week so put it down to that.

She has lost weight 1kg in 3 weeks, would they be able to tell diabetes from urine sample cos she has got one of those at the hospital at the moment?

Just been on net and it mentions being thirsty, increased appetite and cramp in feet, dd has had all of this over the last 4 weeks especially cramp in feet. Will definitly mention this to gp on monday

If she's lost weight then that's also a sign of diabetes.

Would it be possible to get her urine checked at the chemist's tomorrow, or to phone your emergency gp? Without wishing to panic you, things can go downhill VERY fast with children developing diabetes and it can be extremely serious if not treated immediately. (my son is T1 diabetic, I have personal, hard experience of this).

If it is diabetes then it is more likely that she will have very high blood sugars. Has she been wetting the bed?

I would go to your nearest walk in centre tomorrow, please it is possible that she's had it for some time, every day counts. They can go downhill very fast and go into coma.

I don't want to be alarmist but I believe it's a very quick urine test as a ball park yes or no.

Well i gave in urines at hospital on Wednesday so they should be back by now so i assume if there was a problem they would have contacted me

please get her checked, especially with the weight loss. has she had any bloods done recently?

No bloods done recently x I will ring nhs direct and see what they say

but perhaps they wouldn't have routinely tested for diabetes. Also it usually takes over a week for your drs to get the results back from the hospital.

might be better to call out of hours, as nhs direct is full of swine flu calls.

thanks mummytopebs, let us know how you get on, but pleased get advice tomorrow too - too many friends have experiences of these things being missed first time round (our dr didn't put 2+2 together re ds's agonising stomach pain a couple of months before ds became very ill and started weeing too much, and discharged us)

My gp was able to do a urine 'dip' immediately in the surgery.

I have sat in my GPs office and he has drawn blood on the spot, so they can do these things when needed
