DD losing sight in her right eye

DD has been to hospital yesterday and her eyesight in her right eye has detriorated, she has to go back in 6 weeks for more tests. She is being ssen for another problem of flashing sensations but this in her left eye and is so far undiagnosed, the optician does not think this is linked. Has anyone had prblems like this and what will they do if her eyesight continues to detriorate?

My dd is 8 and has had a trabeculectomy and a cataract removed in her right eye, and now has a cataract in her left eye,
probably not the same as your dd, but I understand what your going through

My dd is 4 not sure what is wrong still undergoing tests, she had an mri which showed some scarring and an eeg which showed some rare focal irregularity but nothing been diagnosed or really said yet. What was the symptoms of the trabeculectomy and cataract?

From what you say I think you can rule out a cataract - this would be very easily spotted. A trabeculectomy is done for glaucoma/pressure in the eye and again this sound unlikely in what you've said.

Have they mention any abnormality with the back of the eye any scarring there?

Couldnt see any abnormality on back of eye but are going to look again. Have you ever heard of flashing sensations, that is in the opposite eye

Flashing lights can be caused by a number of different things. Given that this eye has had a good examination I'd suggest you can rule out the obvious like retinal detachment/tears or such like - I didn't want you to google flashing lights and then half scare yourself to death - sorry if that sounds a bit patronising it's not meant to be. Is the vision in this eye ok? And have they linked the two problems? Have they mentioned anything to do with the optic nerve in her right eye?

Oh sorry to confuse you, my dd has arthritis and her eye condition is as a result of that, was just letting you know that I can understand how you must feel, was half sleeping last night, didn't mean to panic you,

but at least you got someone who knows their stuff!

Dd is loosing the sight in her left eye too so I understtand how you feel
Dd is 8 and 4 weeks ago she had a steroid injection into her eye to reduce the inflamation but found out yesterday that this didn't work
She now has an urgant referal to a rumatologist not sure why and we go back to eye department in 6 weeks.
From what he could see on the test it has already begun to damage her retina so playing a waiting game
Fingers crossed for both of them.

I have never heard of getting a steriod injection in eye?

Not that we know of but think thats what they testing for as the eye condition usualy comes with arthritis.
They tried steroid drops first but they didn't help

My dd has been on steriod drops from she was nearly 3, but unfortunately she has developed gluacoma and cataracts, of course nobody can say wiether this is a result of her condition or her medication!

You've got me thinking why they didn't give my dd a steriod injection as her eyes do not tolerate any reduction in her drops, and it was a build up of the inflamed cells that led to her gluacoma!

Is glaucoma the pressure in the eye? Dd's pressure is high she had some photographs of the back of the eye and it should be green hers was red an orange which shows the severity of the inflamation.
Hospital said she should have clear jelly in her eye but hers is cloudy and bloody

Yeap gluacoma is eye pressure, my dds pressure was 52 the morning of her op, she had to have a trabeculectomy, which is like putting in another drain in her eye, her eye pressure is now a bit low but stable!

It is really sad, there is something that scares me more when they talk about problems with eyes, I suppose its because its our sight, and I can cope when they tell me about other things,

but when it comes to her eyes its not so straight forward everything they told me that was worst case scenario and rarely happens, has happened to my dd and I don't know anyone else whose dcs have this problem,
I know lots with arthritis but their eyes have never gave them any bother!

I get really worried too and especially when they told me its rare for the injection not to work
I have had many dealings with hospitals with Dc's but I get freaked when it comes to eyes
They didn't tell me the pressure they just said they need to act fast as if it causes damage it irriversable

Has your Dd's eye condition got a name? or is it just side effects from drops?

MY dd has Euvitis(sometimes they call it Iritis), which she got tested for as she has Juevenile Arthritis (JIA), and unfortunately children with a low number of joints affected are at a higher risk of the eye disease.
She is at the hospital every 6 weeks sometimes more often!

That must be why she has been referred to a rumatologist.
It all makes a bit more sense now.

Would I know if dd had JIA?

My dd had a swollen knee when she was 2.6, and had to have a steriod injection, she has had to have more injections over the years but sometime her joints weren't really noticeably swollen just I know to look out for it!

alibobins - the photos your DD had sound as if they were OCT scans, the colours show up any signs of inflammation in the retina. Eye pressure is measured in a different way in hospitals it can be measured by touching the eye with a blue light shining throw a prism or by using a hand held device called a tonopen. optician tend to measure pressure by the puff of air method.

Her eye pressure was measured under general as she wouldn't let them anywhere near her when awake

What were the symptoms of the arthritis, cos thinking about my dd has been having quite bad pains in her legs and knees the last couple of months and her bones click like mad

My dd started off with a limp that everyone told me I was imagining, then after awhile it became abivious she was limping after lots of play
Then her knee swole up, and the gp said if it didn't go down within so many days to bring her to hospitial, cut along story short he was refferred to a rheumtoid specialist her reffered her on again to another one who specialised in arthritis in children and she told us briefly about the eye condition, and I was shocked when the eye doctor told me she had it, just thought it wouldn't happen to her
