REFLUX BABY MUMMIES PLEEEEASE HELP ME

ds2 has severe reflux and is on max omeperazole and domperidone. ds1 had it so i know all about it and prop them up and all that but ds2 is 13 weeks and just having a nightmare getting him to sleep in the day. he wont fall asleep even on me. can sometimes get him toi sleep out in pram but wont stay asleep when we stop walking. he'll generally fall asleep in the car but again stop car and he wakes unless its in afternoon and he'll generally sleep a few hours in the car seat. at night he sleeps ok in cot all night so dont understand why he is in more pain in the day? he used to fall asleep by himself in the cot but he is in more pain and stops him sleeping. please help, at wits end as cant drive round every 3 hours esp with 2.8 ds1.

oh mad4, sorry you are having a hard time of it

have you tried a swing or a sling? friends with refluxy babies have said that swings are a great way of soothing them and as they keep them pretty upright help with their comfort. Or if he will settle in a sling, it'll at least let you get on with spending time with DS1.

hi lacka, i tried a sling but seems to be too much pressure on his tummy. he likes being held in front of me with a hand under his nappy IUSWIM? its getting him to sleep in the day thats the prob

Sympathies, DS spent the first eight weeks of his life lying over our knees or in our arms like a leopard in a tree and having his bum patted. Either that or he needed to be frantically sucking on our fingers. We finally got him to accept a dummy at 12 weeks and things are a lot easier now. He mostly just pukes up without a murmur now whereas before it caused him a huge amount of discomfort. I realise that he got off lightly though.

Have you tried a vibrating/musical swing?

he hates to be over stimulated and doesnt like that sort of thing. So hard as hes a verfy laid back baby and likes to just watch his brother all day but getting less and less as his pain increases

Oh, I really feel for you, but try to remind yourself that it will pass.

My DD1 needed to be held constantly (only by me) for 6 months. She liked to be held upright facing out (like older babies in baby carriers looking in same direction as parent), or leopard in a tree with patted bottom as LackaDAISYcal says. Also sucking helped a lot (which I frequently mistook for hunger). We stayed on the move and went for long walks a lot, but she was my first and I don't know whether you're able to do that with DS1 as well.

For us, when dd1 got overtired she seemed to be in more pain, so finding a way to get her to sleep in a rigid pattern was important. Co-sleeping for a nap sometimes worked for us (with care regarding blankets etc of course).

Maybe try swaddling? I sometimes felt DD1 wanted to sleep on her tummy to soothe the pain, but I stupidly wasn't brave enough to break the rules, do you have a sympathetic health visitor to speak to/

Good luck and do try to get some help (time off) from DP or family/friends if you can, to preserve your sanity.

madrush, I used to mistake DS's sucking for hunger as well. He would soon let me know that he wasn't hungry though; as soon as he got any milk from my boobs he would pull off and arch his back. Poor DH used to sit with him sucking on his little finger all evening, I'd feed him at 11ish and then i'd take over with the finger plugged in until gone 3am.

Is he sucky? does he have a dummy?

It will pass mad4, although it seems never ending at the time. Is there any family close by who can give you a bit of a break?

Sleeping on tummy helps, but 13 weeks may be too late to start (they hate it by then). What do you mean by max omeprazole. DS2 was on 2/3 pill lanzoprazole mornings AND evenings, which is an adult dosage.
Medication is the only thing that can make a difference. have you tried to give Gaviscon from time to time.

But I know , it is sooooooooooooo difficult. I spent months with DS2 in my arms, crying and crying. Have you changed your diet? Cut dairy, eggs and poultry, and go easy on wheat, wait a week to see if there is any difference. For me it made a difference,meaning he wasn't crying less but would cry more if I had a dairy product.

I had some success with baby yoga video, as the sessions seemed to amuse and distract him from his pain.
It will be over one day, bur it is really hard.

he is on nanny goat formula (under paed advice) because he was tried on all the other milks like neocate but he has proved to be intolerant to dairy/soya.

he has had 1 hours sleep since 7am, at my wits end. trying to feed him and he is constantly refluxing so feed is taking like an hour. the paed told me 2 weeks ago that 1 tablet (4mg) once a day was the max for his weight. gp last week told me it woukd take a month to work when i said no improvment. didnt take that long with ds1. hes been on it 2 weeks today. dont have anyone who can help either. really had enough.

DS1 had severe reflux, was constantly vomiting, was on lots of medication, and could only sleep in an upright position. I nearly went out of my mind from the exaustion and stress.

We brought him to a cranial osteopath and the relief was immediate, it was amazing. This was 10 years ago, when this was regarded as a really alternative treatment, but now it's very widely accepted. The osteopath treated him twice a week for the first few weeks, then weekly for a while after that. The reflux went away and our lives were transformed.

I would really, really encourage you to look for a cranial osteopath for your ds, it's really well worth a try.

You poor thing. Our DD has reflux and I can totally understand what a nightmare it is. Have you had staydown formula from the Dr? We found Gaviscon was our lifesaver as the acid in her vomit was making her scream in pain, and she was so distressed from having it on her skin.

This is probably a really naughty thing to say, but if he's better sleeping on his front then stay with him until he's asleep and then gently roll him onto his back? My gran told me she used to do this!!

we did, and it paid for itself the first day we had it. the movement of it helped baby stay asleep in the way that the movement from the car/pram did.

in fact, with DS1 and DS2, they slept in it all night occasionally when they were at their worst.

I will admit tho, I never had one for DD3 and she was like your DS2. the only thing that helped was time, lots of meds, lots of calpol, and lots of wine for me!

NO dont have swing but will try to borrow one of someone. Its just ridiculously bad. Going to doc this avo to beg for some help but cant see what shes going to do.

Oh God I really feel for you, my DS had silent reflux and screamed the minute you lay him down and screamed and thrashed when he was feeding, it really is awful. We did the gaviscon and propping up etc but it didn't help, my HV was no help they didn't really take us seriously and thought we were being drama people. Have you tried cranial osteopathy, it worked wonders for our DS he was a different baby after 4 sessions. My DS is 7 months old now and is doing really well. It really is awful and upsetting .

I really feel for you. My DS1 had silent reflux and was just like yours but we didnt see a paed until he was 8 months old!!!!!!! He was pt on domperiodone and omeprazole plus gaviscon and it did help - it should have worked for you by now. There are surgical options and also out DS had a barium swallow x ray to see how bad it was - maybe you could ask for further tests to check everything is ok. They can have a twisted intestine causing stuff to back up and that might be the case - thats what they wanted to rule out with our DS. Sorry, I am not trying to scare you, but it is best to get them to check out all possibilites especially as things are not going well!!
Let me know how things go, I really really do feel for you - I know that doesn't help much though xx

thanks jen. he had a barium xray and they said it all looked fine other then the reflux. gp gave carobel yest which has helped abit, just given omep and this is only feed he reflixing whilst drinking......thinking maybe it making him worse? although dnt know if that poss?

Have you tried giving gaviscon as well?? May help hold it down a bit. Was a life saver with my DS1.

Also, I know this sounds a bit strange, but I have reflux myself and am on Omeprezol and I find cold food/drink can be easier than warm/hot. Will he drink cold milk?

he had gaviscon first and had a bad reaction to it.. He used to drink it cold but now warm seems to give him less wind! I think omeperazole is making him worse.... i think i may not give it to him tomorrow to see esp as it hasnt helped. The gp said it might be bile that he is refluxing as apposed to stomach acid...although no idea what the diff is or what that means and she said that may be why he doesnt respond to the antasids (ranitadine didnt help either)
