Child broken adult front tooth

My 8 year old had an accident today and got hit in the face by a swing , the bottom part
of his adult front tooth had been broken off . We called 111 immediately and have emergency dentist tomorrow . We’ve got the chipped off tooth in milk but they said over the phone they won’t glue it back on. I’m so sad for him that he has such damage to such a visible part of his mouth at search an early age . Does anyone have any experience of this and what they might do ?

They can put a crown on it and it'll be fine. There's a very good childrens dentist called toothberry if youre around London.

Yes half broke off they did an awesome filling I forgot about it, you would never know

Same happened to my son at the same age but the two front adult teeth. It was very upsetting at the time so I do feel form you OP!

He's got crowns that you can't distinguish from real teeth but they do occasionally come off so we have been in and out of the dentists surgery. It's free at the moment as he's a child and luckily he is not scared of the dentists. The worst thing is knowing it will be an ongoing dental cost for him as an adult, but other than that chalk it up to life's ups and downs.

My 8 year old had both her top front teeth broken in an "incident" in the playground. Our dentist made it good as new though one needed fixing after a mishap with a saxophone reed some years later.

We had the same thing happen on a water slide in France. We were told by our dentist at home to rub the remaining chipped tooth with fluoride toothpaste. Our son chipped one of his front adult teeth in half. They did a great job of filling it and it’s been good ever since. It was about 7 years ago now. I am sure it’ll all be okay!

Oo the same thing happened to me aged like 14 and I got a fake bit put in on the NHS

My grandaughter chipped her 2 front teeth in a playground accident a few years ago. Our dentist repaired them with composite bonding . They look fine now

My DS broke both adult front teeth in a playground accident about the same age. They were rebuilt with filling. He was told could have veneers as an adult but more tooth would need to be removed for those. He is now 30 and has had them replaced a few times over they years but you would never know.

I can remember how completely freaked out I was when my 8 yr old dd did hers 12 years ago. She was calm ! 🤞her capped tooth is still going and no one can tell.

Yes, my 8yo knocked her half of both her two adult front teeth out a few months ago after tripping on the pavement . I wrote a similarly desperate thread on here about it.

The procedure was amazingly quick - they just used composite to rebuild both teeth. About 10 mins per tooth. I was so worried about it as she’s autistic and hates the dentist, but it went fine with a lot of bribery. We ended up separating it into two appts but there might not be any need to do that for an NT child who copes better in the dental surgery.

the dentist said the caps should last her till she’s a late teen and the May be replaced by full veneers when she ready

One of my DCs chipped a top front tooth - a large chunk was lost. The dentist was able to build up a replacement. We are in the US and it cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah my daughter knocked about half of one front tooth out and a quarter of the other when she was about 9 by jumping around being bonkers by a pool. She was staying with a friend who felt awful.... but honestly could just as easily have happened on my watch.

She has had it fixed with bonding which usually lasts between 6 months and 5 years depending on how good the dentist and what other damage she does to it. She is in her 20s now. I think it will always need redoing now and then. Modern dentistry is amazing though - they can make it look just like a real tooth.

It costs about £200 quid each fix in UK, but usually cheaper overseas so we often get it done when on holiday!

When I was a child I was one of the first to have my front teeth built up with composite - I had a stone thrown at me as they were coming in and had quite a large V shape missing.

on christmas eve my now eight year old did the same.
there was blood, she was crying. i was freaked. (not least because i was in the moment panicking about the life long cosmetic dentistry ahead of her)
a&e nurse (we were 5mins walk away and i couldn’t look in her mouth because we were both too freaked out) was very kind and calming. but a&e don’t do teeth.
111 got us a emergency apt 5hrs later.
but weren’t any comfort or practically reassuring for that wait.

where we were told that despite it being a big chunk missing her front tooth seemed stable and the nerve seemed unaffected.
whilst waiting for the apt i remembered she had attended playgroup with the child of a dentist, so like a loon i turned up on their door , and the friend/dad/dentist had a look and said the same as this emergency dentist later told me, so i calmed down.
at that point we were told there was no point having an xray, as our own dentist could do that when we got an apt (closed til jan 4th)
we got an energy apt on first day open in new year. it was a bit of a blow to be told that the tooth wouldn’t be repaired until late teens. and a consult with a private dentist confirmed this. dentist smoothed edge with cosmetic white temp filling material. but said pointless to add more to make tooth look normal as it would come off straight away.
she looks cute at 8 with this big chipped front tooth, but she won’t feel as relaxed about it at 12/13/14 i’m sure.
we were also warned that it could turn grey and die at any future point, but that hasn’t happened so far. for which i’m thankful.

Start a broken tooth ISA. He has a life time of having that tooth maintained. Of course, scientists are growing teeth now!

My friend had a veneer at 19 and she’s 45 now and never needed it replacing. She thinks it will come up in the next five years, but twice inside three decades doesn’t seem bad

Happened to me at 9 going over the handlebars of my bike. Got a silver crown then a proper one. Front tooth too. Had it replaced 2-3 years ago but they had to do a bridge then and it was a £5K job!

Thanks everyone for your stories it’s reassured me ! We’re at the emergency dentist this afternoon so will report back . The lifelong dentist care is what’s making me the most sad for her , eventually I guess it will become one our ‘holiday stories ‘ , but right now I feel sad for her . The ISA isn’t a bad idea !!

Happened to me at 11 in the 90s, the dentist glued the broken bit back on and it looked terrible.

25 years later the broken off bit fell off again, the dentist rebuilt it with composite and it looks great - you can't tell where the composite ends and the tooth begins.

DH also has composite on his front teeth as he chipped them. It causes him more problems because his teeth are flaky and occasionally the whole composite bit just flakes off - about every 3 or 4 years.

DD knocked a triangular chunk off a front tooth about age 12 and got a temp fix done within 24 hours and permanent fix within 4 days - she’s now 20 and you wouldn’t even notice it and she’s never had an issue with it

She's lucky. I broke my front teeth 25 years ago. Lost about a third of one tooth and a corner of the other. Had composite fillings for 5 years. Then root canal and crown for infection of tooth 1. Second tooth went brown by year 10 so same again. Then brown tooth snapped off 5 years ago and new crown is just hanging on with a screw in the tiny bit of surving tooth. Implant is the next step. Saving money in advance for dental work is a good plan!

My DS broke his front tooth in half, while it was rebuilt he needed a lot of work in it and ultimately needed root canal treatment. The tooth is slightly discoloured and while it was repaired well he’s needed further work on it. I’m speaking to the dentist about an implant when he’s older because the repair doesn’t seem to hold.

This happened to me when I was about 7. We were playing kids chase at school and a boy stuck his leg out and tripped me up. I had blood everywhere from two cut knees and the bottom of my tooth had broken off and gone into my lip. It was my very front tooth. Had to go to gp followed my dentist. They put a cap on it. I’m now 45. It’s come off just a couple of times over the years but you wouldn’t be able to tell. I had fixed braces in my teens. It’s been absolutely fine tbh

I did this to my front tooth at the same age in 1995. It was a pain but really not the end of the world! As a child it needed quite frequent (but free!) work because the tooth eventually died and needed root canal, plus the temporary caps they put on came off pretty frequently. I then had a permanent crown put on at 17 (I think chosen so my teeth had stopped growing but it was still free!) which lasted until I was 35. Replacing it was expensive but not ruinously so, and I'm hoping this one lasts as long! It looks completely natural.

My mum did half-jokingly tell my dad he should pay for the replacement because she still blames him for his inadequate supervision leading to the original accident - I told him that I think the statute of limitations has very much run out on that one!
