Fever no other clear symptoms

My dd has had a fever since Thursday night. Today it's reached 39.5 at its highest. She's having calpol and nurofen which helps a bit but she has no other symptoms. She's off her food and doesn't want to drink.much. I've managed to get her to have a few milk bottles and strawberries. She's miserable.

Would you contact 111 or wait and see? She's 14 months

I am not usually a knee jerk A&E recommender but since there’s no obvious cause of her fever this is a genuine A&E one as they need to ensure there’s not a serious bacterial infection.

Changeisstillpossible · 20/06/2026 22:00

Definitely get her seen by a doctor. Out of hours GP or paediatric A and E.

Cuppaandbiscuit · 20/06/2026 22:03

It’s probably bacterial tonsillitis. Her throat will be very sore and that’s why she’s not eating

DailyEnergyCrisis · 20/06/2026 22:05

I agree that it may be bacterial tonsillitis but given how high the temp is and that she’s miserable, so little still, and off her food you need to have her seen.

Lcw29 · 21/06/2026 11:18

So her temp has came down but has now shot back up over 39. Waiting for doctor now.

So poor girl has a throat infection. She's on amoxicillin so I'm hoping in a few days she'll feel better. Thanks for all the advice!

Sorry quick question.

She can't have anymore calpol or nurofen until 6. But her temp is 39.. what do we do if it keeps going up?

Try giving her an ice lolly, that should help her temperature for the time being.

Lcw29 · 21/06/2026 18:22

Thank you. We've given calpol now but temp.rising still. If it gets to 40 would you call up again? Even if just started antibiotics?

This happened my little boy when he had a throat infection. His temp went to 40.3. It came down again when the calpol/nurofen had time to work. The antibiotics usually take 24-48 hours to work. How are they now?

No, temperatures aren’t dangerous as you know what the cause is and will take a couple of days for antibiotics to kick in.

Lcw29 · 22/06/2026 03:55

Thank you. Her temp has lowered with nurofen. She did vomit after some milk though so trying hard to keep her hydrated.

She's slept a bit finally too

Temp.is down but struggling to get medicine in her. She's screaming and getting a rash so not risking it.

OP posts:
Cuppaandbiscuit · 22/06/2026 15:50

The rash could be linked to scarlet fever. I would get her checked again. I think it’s the same antibiotics though

Lcw29 · 24/06/2026 08:12

Well they've changed antibiotics just in case as her rash was so bad. However her throat looks fine now. Temp down. BUT she's still acting really poorly. Not eating. And when she does she's vomited. Crying and whining almost all the time.

I really hate it. I feel so helpless

Yesterday evening. It's on her face and back arms too

Does the fever go down with calpol / nurofen? Or stays above 38? If it stays, do see someone about it.

Lcw29 · 24/06/2026 08:50

Her fever is down now but she's no better in herself. Saw a gp yesterday and said it could be viral rash but changed antibiotics in case of a reaction.

Just concerned that she's still very upset after 6 days. Still can't eat and although drinking in bits. It's not a lot. But we've been told to basically wait it out. The rash however is now down her legs too. I keep checking that it's blanching

OP posts:
Lcw29 · 24/06/2026 09:06

It couldn't be meningitis could it? She's just not improving. I just have this awful gut feeling something isn't right.

Have you seen GP only or been to paediatric A&E?
if not I’d take her to A&E. My eldest had a weird thing when she was about 4, just started with a really high fever it was a strap infection she needed intravenous antibiotics and fluids.
To me 6 days seem a long time for your DD to have Not shown improvement on a bacterial infection , particularly as you sought help quickly to get on top of it. I would absolutely take her to A&E this morning and be firm there is no improvement/ your concerns etc
i really hope she feels better soon xx

Ruffle26 · 24/06/2026 09:16

I was gonna say My daughter’s infection was picked up quickly with the blood test which they did in A&E hence my thought of you going there this morning.

Thank you. We went to a@e on Monday but were told it was heat rash. However since then it's got massively worse. They were so busy I feel they rushed a bit tbh. I've noticed she keeps hitting her head like she's sore too. She's asleep on me now but something is Def not right.

This may not be relevant, but I had a throat infection once, it was the worse sore throat I’ve ever had. Went to the GP who gave amoxicillin, it didn’t get any better and then I came out in a rash m. Went back and the Dr said I should never have been given amoxicillin for a throat infection. He gave me a different antibiotic which cleared it up. Was horrible though.

Hope she’s feeling better soon

TY78910 · 24/06/2026 09:44

Is she up to date with her vaccinations? Is the rash blanching? Meningitis rash isn’t actually a rash it’s burst blood vessels under skin which is why they say to check if the ‘rash’ is blanching or not. If it’s not then it’s likely under the skin.

Hopefully it’s nothing serious - my DCs have had their fair share of long lasting illnesses and usually it’s because they got something, not completely recovered then had something else. DC2 had HF&M so bad he had a rash all over his body that looked like chicken pox but cleared up in a week he was also really poorly. The heat probably isn’t helping your DC
