Scabies!

We've been struggling with scabies for weeks. Several rounds of cream and it keeps coming back on my 1 year old!
I've bought some Derbac M to try. Has anyone had more success with this?
And if so how do I keep it on my 1 year old for 24 hours as he eats with his hands and puts them in his mouth. Can I use derbac m on his body and cream on his hands overnight.

Please help! I'm desperate and this is really getting me down now. Dr's are useless

Well just as I thought I was getting on top of things my son has had an outbreak again. I’ve also come out in some more and this time my hairline is feeling itchy which it’s never felt before 😩 Son has it on back, around neckline , legs, buttocks and feet and one on hand. He’s also itching his scalp and it’s looks a little red from the scratching. I feel defeated & deflated. Just as I think it’s completely cleared! Son was spot free for weeks. I had a few minor ones that you would t notice had I not been looking. It’s obviously reinfection. I’m thinking it could be a family member who’s asymptomatic?

Hows baby now? Are his hands still clear? Is the rest of the family clear of all symptoms too now?

Momofthree072316 · 04/01/2025 18:08

Oh no tinydancer how are you guys getting on now? My son was also symptom free for almost 3 weeks and just started breaking out again but none of the other family memebera have any symptoms and I’m hesitant to treat for now. How is everyone else doing?

My two little girls and I are having a horrendous time trying to get rid of them! Just as I think we’re getting somewhere we have another outbreak! I can’t even count how many permethrin treatments we’ve done now and the doctors just aren’t really interested. My grandmother contracted them from us and her doctors prescribed ivermectin so I’m hoping to get this from our GP but I know many of them are reluctant to prescribe it. I’m at my wits end and feel like I’m living a nightmare at this point!

Momofthree072316 · 04/01/2025 22:02

Sorry to hear that. You may want to look into ivermectin lotion vs tablets as it absorbs a lot less and mostly effective on the skin where it’s needed. We had the best post treatment blemish free period with it so far vs other treatments although almost 3 weeks later my boys had broken out again. I do think there is an element of skin reaction to over treatment so will hold off from doing another round for now.

Tinydancer1234 · 05/01/2025 04:01

So it’s been 10 days since the last outbreak & I treated myself and son and we are back to normal spots so again will see how long this lasts. He does have a mild rash on back of his legs but this looks like eczema and it’s not blisters. I’ve been using sudocrem for healing which helps. Itts a good antiseptic also so keeps skin clean and doesn’t hurt 👍

Blanket26 · 05/01/2025 09:08

I agree that many treatments can cause skin reactions. I try to remind myself that skin takes a month to renew if not a bit longer, and spots can appear and reappear. The treatments are strong and definitely caused sensitivity for us so the last few times I've been much more reluctant to treat straight away until I'm absolutely certain as I do get concerned im stuck in a treatment cycle.

I have been questioning whether my boy has acropustulosis as he doesn't get body rashes, the timeline fits for flare ups as I'd be back at the doctors every few weeks due to hands and feet and why he'd continue to get the pustules in between and after weeks of repeated treatments. No one around us has contracted it in the previous 7 months either.

Really sorry to hear everyone is continuing to struggle. It is an awful thing

My boy has the same as yours blanket on his palms and feet - think it could be related to over treatment as you suggest but I also read it could be flaring up due to allergic reaction to the mite. I’m watching his body carefully as that’s more of a sign for me to treat again. But since no one else picked it up since our first treatment as a family I think it could be over treatment related. I do highly recommend the ivermectin lotion if you decide to treat again. It really cleared things up for my little guy and doesn’t have the same absorption by the liver which can be more toxic from the pill form

Oh thank you, I wasn’t aware there was a lotion form of ivermectin. Did you get this prescribed or can it be bought over the counter?

Momofthree072316 · 05/01/2025 10:25

You need to get it prescribed and find a compound pharmacy to mix it for you as ideally you want the 0.5% strength and it’s not available in the UK. They only have saloontra 1% which you can also use but I didnt want to since my boy is so young. Good luck!

Momofthree072316 · 08/01/2025 22:42

Hey Blanket how is your boy getting on? Mine has itchy hands and feet but not much on his body - occasional spot but not as bad as it was before. Sounds like we are in a similar place - you guys a few weeks ahead as we just finished last treatment 3.5 weeks ago. I’m choosing to not treat unless he breaks out on the body as it does seem consistent with acrupostulosis as you suggested

Did you see the pics i posted in previous comment? If it's disturbing sleep i found a dose of piriton really helped to keep them settled. I'm really unsure whether to just do another treatment. I know I'll have a follow up appointment coming up with the dermatologists and I don't want them to question why I haven't done treatments. It messes with your mind so much!

Hi Blanket, I’m sort your stil dealing with the this. I am too….still. Today my son can out in a rash on his legs really badly and last night I was itching it was so strange. We haven’t been too bad over Christmas but he just recently had two little lesions appear (scabs) on his torso. Because we haven’t had a major breakout I’ve kind of become resigned to it and I remember the first time we had it it took well over a year to go and I moved house too! What difficult to know is if it’s scabies then how are we being reinfected constantly or not able to zap it. Is it a person or is it through sofas etc? I’ve give. Up putting sheets on the sofas now, it got too much for me. I’m still washing on high heat through. Other than the baby displaying symptoms how are you now? Have you been totally in the clear for sometime now?

Momofthree072316 · 18/01/2025 18:30

Tiny dancer sorry you are dealing with a flare up again! My 20 month old breaks out on hands and feet similar to blanket but body is mostly clear and right now feet and hands are fine too. We haven’t treated for 5 weeks and I’m hoping all these flare ups are post.

kerstina · 19/01/2025 13:55

I am so glad I have found this thread as I am feeling so alone with this.Feel like I am going mad. I am sure that Permethrin does not work and that the mites have become resistant to it , I have just read all of the thread . I don’t have a young child so only saw this thread by chance when googling .My DS is 22 he had been travelling in Thailand and then started a grad role in September and the drs thought the itchy rash he developed was stress. Two months later no better so he himself after reading about scabies asked dr if it could be that as he could see burrows. He was treated with permethrin as we all did and I still got it in late November. Two visits to the drs and lost count of permethrin treatments we have done. I have an appointment on the 2 nd Feb for a review but I am really scared we will never shake these off. I keep thinking of things like are they on my rubber gloves, phone ,I pad. The drs just seem so blasé about this . I know my skin and body it is normallly clear and I know I still have them. So sorry you are all dealing with this with babies and young children .

Tinydancer1234 · 20/01/2025 20:51

Please don’t panic too much. It is an ongoing issue for some of us but as long as you can get to the point where you’re not itchy. My son and I are mostly clear but we still come up with the odd few which I spot treat. We no longer feel itchy. You will get to the bottom of ot eventually and please don’t panic about every item you handle it will send you crazy. The only thing you can do is keep going back to the gp or derm. Perhaps ask for ivermectin and multiple doses of it not just 2 weeks apart. See how you get on with that. I’ve found it was the ivermectin that reduced it massively for me however my little one still gets it and I believe we may have a family member who is atypical- not showing signs so is transferring it possibly. Like you we are all confused as to why it’s taking so long to go away. I do use tea tea shower gel and a salicylic, tea tree and sulfur soap. I think that has helped. Just remember you are not alone. Everything will be ok In the end. The only thing I do now is change my bed sheets daily but I don’t have anything on the sofas etc anymore as it got to much and I can honestly say I dont see any difference in my skin without sheets on the sofa. I deffo think after a treatment it’s good to hoover everything but other than that just keep washing on hot wash and change sheets regularly. Hopefully doc will give you ivermectin for you and your son and see how you get on with that. Sudocrem is also good as it’s good for eczema, rashes, healing and is antiseptic too Incase it is something bacterial.

Good luck and chin up. Don’t stress you’re not on your own. Xx

AlwaysGrateful · 25/01/2025 13:33

My best friend's son had scabies and it spread through the family quickly, they had similar issue but found they only way to clear it once and for all was for them all to take the treatment at the same time and then daily wash bedding, towels and hoover the mattress, sofa etc. They also didn't share towels and it finally worked. Lot of work but they were so relieved to finally get rid of of scabies from the house.

Oblomov25 · 28/01/2025 07:13

No luck getting rid of it here. It has caused misery for Dh, and us all. Creams used. Dh under the consultant has been prescribed Ivermectin tablets. As others have said it is suggested that this is a resistant strain.

I'm at a loss at what to do next.

Stickytoffee21 · 28/01/2025 10:29

We have been using a cream we bought of Etsy and it seems to be doing wonders so far. I will link it for you, it’s a bit pricey but if you’re as desperate to get rid of the little cretins as we are you won’t mind paying! 😂

Tinydancer1234 · 28/01/2025 11:29

I bought this too and the bath stuff but I have to say I didn’t continue to use it after a few days as I didn’t see much difference. What difference have you seen? Spot disappearing? Eczema like rash disappearing? I’d be interested to know. May have virtually all cleared up but my toddler son is still coming out with the odd spots and eczema like rash between his legs.

Tinydancer1234 · 28/01/2025 11:30

Hi Blanket, Have you had any success with the ivermectin? Is little one ok now?

kerstina · 28/01/2025 11:53

Thank you for your calming words of reassurance Tinydancer1234 . Very much appreciated. Still suffering here . Have appointment with dr for review next Tuesday. What annoys me is that two drs have examined me and said I can expect itching for up to one month after treatment but I know I still have them as I have fresh bites. I explained it is important I am mite free as I visit my Mum with dementia in a care home . Why are they not taking me seriously? I did another permethrin treatment on Friday as did DH and son but it must be about the 8 th time and I know it’s not working !

It’s the thing that seems to be working best for us atm. Skins cleared and itching is minimal. We use it every night after the bath as I begrudge doing anymore permethrin treatments but also don’t want to spiral out of control again..

Tinydancer1234 · 28/01/2025 15:19

That’s ok. A lot of people have this problem where they aren’t taken seriously. Unfortunately it’s one of those things where unless they are infected they don’t care and don’t realise how hard it is to get rid of. They think if the cream doesn’t work then it can’t be that but I think they have just become resistant t to premetrin as it’s been used for years. Bit like some headline products which ironically is also permethrin in some. This is why ivermectin works sometimes as less people are able to get hold of it so it’s less resistant I believe however I believe this will change also in time. Scabies is known to be a neglected tropical decease by the World health organisation and because its relatively rare there is less research or desire to find a cure to eliminate these mites from society completely which they could well do. There should be a vaccine but there isn’t. All I can say is just remember you’re not alone and it will go eventually. Get the ivermectin - you may need a few courses of that rather than just the one. I also use the v55 soap from Amazon- it has tea tree, salicylic acid and sulphur. My dermatologist said this is good when I mentioned it to him. You can’t use it on kids though as it has salicylic acid in.

I’m suffering the same with my 3 yr old. Tried permethrin no longer itchy but red spots keep appearing on me and my son. I don’t know what to do as the cream isn’t effective and nor is derbac m. Washing everything on hot wash and tumble try, bedding and clothes each day. Doctors won’t prescribe tablet as it’s not an fda approved drug and not licensed in the uk for human scabies even though it’s used in other countries and they use it on pets in the uk. It’s judicious! Drs are rubbish and clueless about scabies and keep saying to use the cream. Also it’s all well if you can get someone to prescribe it but they won’t prescribe a toddler with it only the cream. So you just keep getting reinfected. My son came out with it first so I treated us both with permethrin and two days later I came out in sports like my son when I was clear previously. I’m getting new ones everyday. Any advice would be most welcome. Can anyone who does have it and has got rid of it please let us know what they did as most people post and once they get rid of it (or not) don’t follow up I’ve seen on here. It would be good to know what they did and how long it lasted so I can know if I’m doing anything wrong.

The tablet (Ivermectin) IS now licensed in the UK....
