Scabies!

We've been struggling with scabies for weeks. Several rounds of cream and it keeps coming back on my 1 year old!
I've bought some Derbac M to try. Has anyone had more success with this?
And if so how do I keep it on my 1 year old for 24 hours as he eats with his hands and puts them in his mouth. Can I use derbac m on his body and cream on his hands overnight.

Please help! I'm desperate and this is really getting me down now. Dr's are useless

I ordered a scabies tea tree oil from Etsy which had good reviews so that’s what I’ve been using but can’t really say it’s doing much. My girls are still itching like crazy and sleep is just a myth for my 11 month old ☹️
I haven’t used the sulphur cream as of yet but definitely considering something different because I can’t see any real improvements as of yet.
Something else I’ve been trying to do everyday recently is steam clean the sofa and mattresses to try and kill off any mites that may have transferred but not sure how effective that is.. it’s just a minefield!

It's horrible when sleep is disturbed! piriton is helpful. I was tempted to go towards sulphur cream too so if you use it please let me know how you get on.
I did think about a steam cleaner but I read that they need to be exposed to heat for several minutes to die so i'm just relying on hoovering and blankets as covers that I can wash and interchange. But that may be my next purchase as something else to try, although worrying about fitting in another chore to my daily list haha

Thanks so much for your message and sorry your little one is still struggling with it. Hopefully this final round works. Do the hands look like they have burrows or just blistery? My little one’s hands are looking ok but the feet are quite bad but it does look a bit different than before which makes me think it may be treatment related. But then again he started getting spots all over body which made us treat again. Have you tried sulfur lotion? That’s next on our list…

You're welcome, i'm sorry you're going through this too. When he first had it he had 2 burrows and a rash on his tummy. Second time 1 more burrow and rash again. No pustules during this time.0 But with more treatments he's got no rash but so many yellow pustules on his hands that are really red underneath. I've normally held out between the last few treatments as long as I could and then pretty sure I've seen odd burrows which is when ive gone back to the doctors although they haven't looked at the burrows just the pustule/blisters.
My son did come out in loads of bumps and spots very quickly after the last treatment of malathion but I held off and it cleared within 2 weeks.
No I've been really tempted to im just so cautious of what I put on his skin as he also really suffered with eczema since a few weeks old.
How many treatment rounds have you done?

Momofthree072316 · 22/10/2024 12:17

We have done perm twice on body and 5 times on hands and feet and now on second round of malathion. I also found the burrows returned in higher number after treatment. Perhaps the skin is thinner/less protected post treatment and is more easily accessible? Who knows?!

if this doesn’t work I’ll try the sulfur cream and give him a break for a few weeks. Let’s keep our fingers crossed this goes soon!

I think I'm going to treat just feet and hands tonight like you. That's the annoying thing there's so few burrows on his hands but loads of blisters.

I'm praying this is over soon too! Will definitely look into sulfur cream

Sorry to hear there are a few more mummies and little ones suffering too. I’ve tried sulphur 10% but it never got rid of it. I think it’s a good thing to add to your treatment as it’s natural but you have to be careful as it can be very drying. I haven’t used it on my 2.5 yr old although I think it’s safe for there age group. I’ve also put tea drops in babies bath but no effect. Ivermectin calmed skin down but again didn’t get rid. Perm is the only thing that helps the spots disappear but like you all they reappear. I don’t feel malathion works either.

Im wondering seeing as we are all having the same issue of getting rid of them it can only be that someone else is reinfecting us or they have become resistant to these insecticides.

My little boy has broken out in about 10 spots today so seem to be going backwards at the moment. I’m pretty clear and only have around 5 on my body. Neither of us are itching at all and haven’t for a long time. Can’t see any burrows either.

It will be really good to see what “Blankets” paediatric dermatologist says. Mine said to try malathion which I know you lot have also done.

im going to give it another week before I speak to the dermatologist again. I think however we know all the products that can be used. There really isn’t much else for the little ones thar I’m aware of.

Keep us posted on how everyone is doing.

xx

Does anyone know any success stories with little ones? I’m starting to get really concerned nothing seems to be working.

if so, how long did it take? How many rounds of treatments? Getting desperate over here as we have two other kids and parents with nanny in our household and only so much everyone can take.

I'm hoping they'll recommend something else to try at the appointment as I'll be so angry if they suggest permethrin again.
If you do speak to your dermatologist please let us know if they suggest anything else.

I'm glad you none of you are itching. Ive yet to spot any burrows on the rest of us too

It's so stressful but please please try not to let it get hold of you too much. I really struggled for a long time too dealing with it all

If it helps my eldest hasn't had any signs of it in the 5 months we've been suffering. Including visiting family members who have been here when we believed we were clear and seeing us in the weeks before symptoms when you're supposed to be contagious too

As I mentioned unfortunately we suffered with scabies almost a decade ago with my first son who is now a teenager. He was treated and went back to school. We continued to come out in spots for 18 months until it finally disappeared. It was a dreadful time and now we have caught it again I believe. Same issues not quite going. No itch just few spots that keep coming up on me and my 2 yr old. The first time nobody else caught it and neither did anyone in the school so I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s more likely where you have skin to skin contact and I guess bedding etc. x

Tinydancer1234 · 25/10/2024 21:23

They will prob tell you to try derbac m. Which again didn’t work for us either.

If the spots aren’t on his body and only on his hands could it be a bacterial thing? Or something an oral antibiotic could help with? If there are no more burrows? Or what about an antihistamine if he’s having a reaction to the medication? Only clutching at straws here but like you I’m willing to investigate anything when it seems we are doing all the right things and it’s not going away.

Tinydancer1234 · 25/10/2024 21:29

Has the Dr prescribed anything other that permethrin? Have they checked it’s not bacterial infection etc and certain it’s scabies?

We are all in the same boat here and it’s crazy it doesn’t clear up. My dermatologist did say there is a resistant strain to premethrin. He advised derbac m which hasn’t worked either. There is not much else for scabies for little ones. It seems strange though that some people say they were cured by using tea tree oil. It has not worked for us. Not sure why some of us struggle with this. I’m an ocd clean freak so it’s not that I’m not washing my clothes etc.

Has anyone else in the family got it or just little one?

twomanyfrogsinabox · 25/10/2024 21:31

If one of you still have it you all have to treat (again) all at once and hot wash bedding etc. I got it abroad but one treatment killed it all dead.

Yeah we did derbac m but can't keep his hands dry and clean or out of his mouth for 24 hours so used permethrin on hands for the last 12 hours at night.
I was thinking the same thing about it being something else. Also due to how quickly it spreads across his hands but just before I've started a treatment round i've seen a burrow each time.

Yes we use antihistamine sometimes but again I worry if there are any issues with long term use of that. It is the odd pimple on feet but hands covered in blisters

I have seen its been on the news tonight aswell

Yes the household has treated around 5 times in total (so nearly 10 applications of the cream) all applied at the same time with correct washing procedure afterwards. Mulitple treatments finally cleared my partner who started with it first but my youngest is the one with it now. We still all treat together

It’s been on the news? A surge? Or resistance?

Yeah it seems by what you’re saying with the burrows that it sounds doubtful it’s anything else. Is it possible one of the family members still has it & keeps reinfecting? So strange how it’s stuck to the hands and no where else on body now. My little one is pretty clear but keeps getting the odd one on his forearm or on his face now. Saying that I’ve had weeks where he has been clear and then comes out with about 5-6 spots. Just when you think it’s cleared.

When is your dermatologist appointment? Have you long to wait? Xx

Momofthree072316 · 29/10/2024 12:15

tinydancer - are you continuing to treat or holding off. Seems like a long time that it’s cleared which is great to hear. We are not sure yet - been a week since the last treatment and not seeing burrows but still quite a few spots and new ones appearing but then disappearing. How was your little one in the early weeks post last treatment

Tinydancer1234 · 30/10/2024 13:57

We have never been covered in spots but I knew what it was as I had it 10 yrs ago. The fact that my son and I both got it I knew it was contagious and then I had the itching, my son didn’t as I think it was caught early. I had real trouble the first time around getting rid of it and we had it over a year. This time our symptoms are reduced and my 2 yr old I’m finding it hard to get rid of on him. I think he keeps getting reinfected from other family members however they show no itching symptoms or spots that they feel are normal. The other family members don’t live with us. I also know how ineffective the cream is and my dermatologist mentioned that there is a big resistance to it now. I think most of the scabicides are getting less effective. It’s known to be a neglected tropical disease and it’s often misdiagnosed by doctors unless you have clear obvious signs. I’ve also never seen any white burrows only had red scab lines and spots.

Our spots would disappear after spot treating but new ones would reappear after little one came back from family. It’s hard to tell if it’s them or if they just came back but my skin has got a lot better however I’ve taken ivermectin several times.

In the early weeks little ones spots popped up and I did the treatment and it would die down for about two days and the the odd one or two would pop up on his forearm, wrist tummy or bottom. Mine appeared under my arms, under breasts, bottom, torso and shoulder blades.

If they are disappearing this is a good sign as long as they continue to reduce in the amount they are coming in. If they increase in quantity you know it’s prob not a good sign.

Yes a surge in cases.

I thought about family members but I kept him just in the household for a few weeks and the blisters kept reappearing. I did 3 consecutive weekly treatments and the blisters have gone for now although I've noticed a few red spots.
We still haven't received a letter with an appointment date yet.

Tinydancer1234 · 10/11/2024 15:30

Cant believe they havent sorted you out with an appointment yet. It ridiculous how slow these things are. It’s good to hear the blisters have gone on his hands. Are his spots jist reappearing on hands or body?

My son and i are doing well at the moment but still havwnr got rid completely. 95% clear at the moment. Just cant get rid of the last few. I got a case of impetigo on my nose which has now cleared with cream but it made me wonder is this bacterial now? The whole thing confuses me as to why its so hard for me to rid of.

Seeing as our skin is 95% clear ive sropped putting sheets on the sofas as it was dribing me insane. Im still changing the bed and towels everyday. How about you?

How is everyone else in the family?

Momofthree072316 · 10/11/2024 20:18

We are in the waiting pattern. A few weeks ago we had what looked like a clear resurgence but no burrows. We did a treatment and it all cleared the whole skin for over a week - decided to repeat the treatment to hopefully be done with it in case there were some burrows but then the little guy broke out in a whole lot of spots. So odd - maybe still active or maybe we have overdone it. Saw a dermatologist and she wasn’t sure either. Prescribed a bunch of creams to see if it clears the rash. But hands and feet are clear now just the body but looks quite bad still…

Momofthree072316 · 10/11/2024 20:19

tinydancer how long since your last treatment now? Do you find it’s less and less spots each week? Fingers crossed you will be all clear soon!

So I've rang the hospital and it's a 7-10 month wait. They've now put him on the cancellation list but that's just ridiculous.

Some spots have now started appearing on his feet. He had a couple of blisters start on his hands a few days ago but they seem to have gone. Really at a loss with what to do.

I'm really glad you seem to be doing OK. Sorry to hear about the impetigo. For my own wellbeing I've stopped being so intense with cleaning as to me it doesn't appear to be working. I go intense with cleaning and laundry between treatments and a few days after but I do dial it down after that as tbh I'm just expecting reinfection each time now anyway.

We tend to be clear for a few weeks after final treatment and then it creeps back in. It's going to be 2 weeks since last treatment this week and he's coming up with spots already. He has nothing on his body whatsoever it's always just hands and feet.

Hi there

Im really struggling with what I’m being treated for is scabies but not so sure. I’ve now used lyclear as standard (one treatment one week apart) and more intense as didn’t clear (3 times over three nights then another two nights a week later). I still feel itchy and only last used it not even 48 hours ago and aware from reading that’s normal. What’s weird is I’m still breastfeeding my daughter and have been throughout and she doesn’t seem to have it at all and hasn’t at any stage. Has anyone else had this? Also since the three times in a row it seems to have spread to my face. I’ve been prescribed by GP and I’m waiting list for dermo but apparently it’s still months. Being struggling with this since July and feeling at wits end! Have been doing all hygiene but do wonder if could do more so have now ordered a spray and oil. Would love to get a skin test to confirm it’s definitely scabies! Any advice or anyone who has fully recovered would be so helpful as can’t seem to find any positive recovery stories! Thank you
