Would this worry you?
DD7 had scarlet fever 2 weeks ago, 10 days of antibiotic. 2 days after completing the course she’s complained of a sore head
each day that has stopped with calpol, but also complains of feeling very sick a few times a day without vomiting. She’s felt a little warm to the touch but nothing too hot.
is this likely to be a random virus or could the scarlet fever be causing problems? just feels a coincidence to have finished the course but 2
days later develop headaches and nausea. Thank
you in advance

I'm no help but DD had scarlet fever a couple of months ago then immediately had covid, shingles and then vomiting and diarrhea and has for the past month complained daily of headaches! We have got her booked in for a blood test to see what is going on.

Hers also always get better with paracetamol

Smartiesorskittles · 14/04/2024 22:28

Oh gosh your poor DD☹️what a lot. I’m glad you have a test
booked and hope they get to the bottom
of it 💞

Just imagine long winded way of saying that the scarlet fever seems to have been a catalyst for headaches and other illnesses!

Smartiesorskittles · 14/04/2024 22:44

That’s so helpful (though I’m sorry
your daughter is going through it too)

Mini blondes 7 a few weeks ago had head aches for 4 days and I had to collect from School One day but no other symptoms

Sunday she woke to red cheeks and it was slap cheek

Once face is Red not contagious anymore , but highly Infectious few days before but obv you don't know they are going to get it (but like chicken pox)

but after reading about it other symptoms can be temp - sore throat - runny nose

Dd didn't get any of those

Boatshoes · 15/04/2024 16:27

Hi OP, my DD (8) always complains of headaches when unwell; they usually are proceeded by a snotty nose. A couple of weeks ago, she started up with the headaches again when she began coughing and she was so poorly for a week with a horrible virus that caused daily headaches - GP believed it was covid. I think if your DD has been unwell it could be a new bug that has entered the chat. IMO, I would just pop along to the doc for reassurance. I hope she feels better soon.

Smartiesorskittles · 15/04/2024 20:43

thank you so much. Today she has developed a cough so I’m wondering if it’s a virus / covid and I’ve been on wrong path with the strep A/ scarlet fever route. It’s really reassuring to hear your DD has headaches when getting unwell (though I’m sorry she does) x

If the headaches and/or nausea continue I would get her checked over.

It's very rare but sometimes Strep A isn't seen off by the antibiotics so I would always be cautious if DC is unusually out of sorts afterwards.

Smartiesorskittles · 15/04/2024 21:10

Oh really? Ok thank you. What would it mean if it hadn’t cleared with the antibiotics? X

OP posts:
GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 15/04/2024 21:18

It can go into the bloodstream and cause infections elsewhere. It's a serious condition but as I say it's rare so I don't want to worry you unduly but just to say that if your DC doesn't seem right to you then follow your instinct and get checked.

It was 5 days after finishing antibiotics that DD became seriously unwell but she hadn't really got completely better in the meantime.

Smartiesorskittles · 15/04/2024 21:21

She definitely isn’t quite herself, more tired than usual and feeling nauseous. But she seems a lot better in other ways so I’m just not sure. do you mind me asking what symptoms your DD had when it went into her bloodstream?

OP posts:
GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 15/04/2024 21:42

Day 3/4 after finishing antibiotics: nausea, loss of appetite, running out of energy sooner, behaviour going to pot. Then on day 4 she started getting very high temperatures (40+) and then day 5, severe pain in one foot which is where the infection had landed.

Smartiesorskittles · 15/04/2024 21:44

oh gosh how scary. Sorry for bombarding you with questions but this has been my worry - did you know then that it was strep causing it?
my dd seems more herself today but definitely more tired, and easily nauseous and emotional.

I actually didn't find out she'd had strep at all until the hospital found it in a blood test. She'd been very unwell a fortnight before which is likely when she had Strep A but because she had it without the rash or gunk on the tonsils it went undiagnosed at the time.

Listen, you're feeling uneasy. Please listen to that and unless she's much improved again in the morning then just go and be seen by the GP. If she suddenly gets a high temp or severe pain then make sure you're seen straight away.

Smartiesorskittles · 15/04/2024 22:03

Thank you so much for sharing this. You’re right, I am feeling uneasy and I’m tired of looking at her wondering if she’s ok- I think I do need to get her reviewed, maybe they can do a swab to confirm it if has cleared or not and then I can stop wondering. I’m glad your dd
was ok x

Just wanted to provide a little update:
she seemed to be on the mend, but came home
from school today and fell asleep which is very unlike her and when I checked her temp it was 40 degrees ☹️ended up at out of hours where they said they think it’s a virus but have taken another throat swab to check the strep A has gone 😵‍💫in for a long night ahead X

Sorry to hear this. How is she today?

Smartiesorskittles · 18/04/2024 09:00

She’s very hot, feels sick and is just dozing on and off. I feel on high alert and just waiting the next 48-72 hours for swabs to come back ☹️

OP posts:
GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 18/04/2024 13:46

Is her temp coming down with Nurofen? I was told by a doctor that if fever doesn't come down to near normal after Nurofen that I should take DD in.

Calpol isn't as good at bringing temperature down quickly or fully.

Smartiesorskittles · 18/04/2024 14:01

It’s coming down to 38.6 so it is coming down but she’s still hot. I was a bit annoyed they were so dismissive and certain its a virus- I basically begged them to do a swab to check it isn’t still strep as her voice sounds funny like her throat is sore even though she’s saying it’s not. They basically
said if she’s had the course of antibiotics (which she has) then it can’t be strep and make made me feel like I was overreacting as it will just be a virus ☹️

OP posts:
Smartiesorskittles · 18/04/2024 17:27

She now says her throat hurts and has eaten nothing all day, and her tongue looks awfully like a strawberry tongue to me ☹️do I take her to OOH again? Nervous to wait 3 days for the swab to come back as it won’t be back until after the weekend.

I hope your DD is feeling a bit better today @Smartiesorskittles

Smartiesorskittles · 19/04/2024 09:08

She’s still the same, hot, refusing to leave bed. I feel really helpless, no idea what to do as nervous to go into the weekend with her so poorly and waiting for swabs that might not be back until mid next week, however I think the dr will just say she’s been seen and had swabs taken so nothing
else to be done. it’s hard feeling like you don’t know what to do.

OP posts:
GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 19/04/2024 09:26

If she's still having fevers of 40 that don't come down below 38 after Ibuprofen I'd take her back to the GP today. I think that's completely reasonable. They can check her over again. Did they check a urine sample last time?

Smartiesorskittles · 19/04/2024 09:43

No I actually wondered about urine sample check at 4am last night pointlessly
wondering why they didn’t check that with such high temps.
it was very much “it’s a virus” and NFA.
thank you for your support. I think you’re right. I’m going to get her seen again today. She’s not well and I’m not happy with just sitting and waiting with her literally lying in bed and not eating and high temps with nothing else being done to find the infection source ☹️
