If anyone has any doubts, please report rather than posting on the thread. Please also keep TGs in mind - I'm sure we all know what it's like to have a wobble about something the baby's done!

wassfd · 01/07/2021 17:53

Because deli meat can cause listeria

He'll be fine OP, don't worry!

Wow, MN has changed in the 15 years I've been here! 15 years ago all the replies would have been posters having an attack of the vapours over the fact that a 7 month old even sniffed a sausage roll! 😂

Anyone else remember threads where Gregg's sausage rolls were mentioned like they were the root of all evil? Just me? I'm getting old. Grin

doadeer · 01/07/2021 17:58

He will be fine. My son regularly eats kinetic sand and mud much to my dismay.

I wouldn't call sausage roll deli meat as it's just cooked sausage meat isn't it? I thought deli meat was cured meat?

GreyhoundG1rl · 01/07/2021 18:01

I thought deli meat was cured meat?
It is. And he only ate the pastry...

wassfd · 01/07/2021 18:02

Thank you both I thought deli meat was just packaged meat maybe I was mistaken.

People are being a bit mean. Ive often been quite anxious about what my baby eats, especially when it's out of my control because it's been given by other people.
But your son will be fine, there's nothing dangerous in what he's eaten. Listeria probably wouldn't occur in a sausage roll because it occurs mainly when meats have been heated up and cooled down in particular ways such as cured meat (I'm pretty sure). Even in meats where listeria can occur, it is seriously rare! How many times have you eaten pepperoni for example and not become ill? Only worry is the salt content is not good for that age but every now and again will not do any harm. You can relax x

You’re mixing up pregnancy rules with baby rules.

I remember causing uproar when I admitted I kept my toddler quiet on shopping trips with a greggs sausage roll and a FRUIT SHOOT!! I was the world's worst type of parent but said toddler has grown up into a normal nearly 18 year old - or maybe the teenage tantrums were because of the shopping snacks I fed her?
SunshineCake · 01/07/2021 18:03

I'm sure he'll be fine @wassfd. Sorry you are worried and there's no need for such horrible comments. Being a parent is scary and everyone has had worries at times. @wassfd tell your mum not to feed your child whatever you don't want him having. He's still very little and a sausage roll, or pastry, isn't what he needs.

Fiddliestofsticks · 01/07/2021 18:06

The biggest problem with deli meats for children is the high salt content, not listeria. There are maybe 150 cases a year in the UK. It really is very very rare and weaning children can eat cold meat.

Being a new mum is hard, but you have got to calm down or you'll never get through it. In 5 years, you'll think back to this thread and think "well I was an idiot". We all have a moment like that!

Yes. I have 2 DC now in their 30’s. One approaching 20’s. They all survived Greggs sausage rolls (and the occasional fruit shoot! 😂)

Tbh I would worry more about how healthy a sausage roll is for a baby.

However, your baby is unlikely to get sick, especially if the sausage roll is packaged correctly and stored at the right temperature.

Please try not to worry. Listeria is more of a concern when you are pregnant or a newborn, so your baby will most likely be fine.

Just keep an eye on them and if they appear unwell then seek advice.

BlowMeDownWithAFeather · 01/07/2021 18:09

Mouldy pastry was the forerunner of penicillin.

BusySittingDown · 01/07/2021 18:09

Fruit Shoots! Grin

The mere mention of a Fruit Shoot would cause a fight on here! Mine used to have them at soft play - they're ok.

@Buttons294749

Once you get to your second DC that's what you'll wean them on 🤣🤣🤣
I couldn’t have put it better myself 😂
JazzerMcCreary · 01/07/2021 18:14

My 7MO ate great handfuls of vegetation, probably covered in dog wee, this morning. 😬

SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/07/2021 18:14

Oh god.

I’d suggest booking in with your GP. This level of anxiety must be quite difficult to live with.

Nocutenamesleft · 01/07/2021 18:18

@firstimemamma

For perspective my toddler ate mud from the back garden yesterday! All was well. He'll be ok.
He’s not your first is he

Guaranteed this is OP’s first child.

Kids who eat mud are usually third child.

You think I’m joking. But they actually did a study on it somewhere in Europe! About how we relax the more kids you have.

00100001 · 01/07/2021 18:20

Your baby will be fine.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/07/2021 18:20

I thought this would be about salt! Or maybe gluten...

Food poisoning from in date, properly cooked food is rare.

Nocutenamesleft · 01/07/2021 18:21

@SpringRainbow

I am fairly certain that your baby will be absolutely fine.

Both mine ate far worse when younger.

You are fighting a loosing battle when they are old enough to pick stuff up and put it in their mouth, they can be surprisingly fast and sneaky.

My 2nd was a bugger for putting everything in her mouth

She ate a 5p coin. (We sterilised it and then framed it! I’m a shit parent we’re going to give it to her on her 18th! It took 3 weeks to come out!).

She then ate the silica packet from a bee handbag too. The ambulance man did not stop laughing at me. (I didn’t call 999. I rang 111 who had on call an ambulance man. He thought it was hilarious. Made me feel much better actually).

Oh. The stories we have. Love these threads.

Nocutenamesleft · 01/07/2021 18:23

@practicallyperfectwithprosecco

A fruit shoot. You horrible mother. And ON TOP of a greggs sausage roll. I’m surprised you didn’t get jail time frankly 😂

Rosesareyellow · 01/07/2021 18:24

I found one of mine happily munching on a piece of coal from the fireplace once (the fire place was capped off incase anyone’s worried about that, although I don’t think that makes it better overall).

Barton10 · 01/07/2021 18:24

My DS ate cat food when he was 6 months old. He is a strapping 21 year old now. Babies are a lot tougher than we realise.
