Orange scalp spots

Hi everyone my son is 1 year old and for a little while now he’s had 2 bright orange spots in his hair, and I mean they’re neon! I’ve been monitoring them and they haven’t gotten any bigger, he’s perfectly fine in himself and they don’t bother him. Just wondered if anyone has seen anything like it with their children too? Haven’t sought medical advice yet as he is not unwell and they don’t bother him. Photo for reference xx

Have you tried running a bit of oil in, letting soak and seeing if they rub off? My kids both have similar, though not quite as neon more of a bright yellow, and it's a form of cradle cap that they've not grown out of yet

It’s not cradle cap, it’s not flaky and can’t be removed. It’s part of his skin. Like a mole. But I’ve never seen anything this bright orange colour before like a mole or freckle. He has 2 and one very tiny one almost not visible on his face x

I'm not an expert by any stretch, but could it be some form of xanthoma or xanthogranuloma? I think they can appear orange or yellow. They can be benign, but can indicate some underlying issues, so might be worth getting it checked?

Hi,
Unfortunately I'm unable to suggest anything but I'm wondering if you've had any luck finding out what it is?
My little boy is now 9 months old, when he was born he had a little red mark on his scalp which then turned into a lump so we got it checked and now it's exactly the same as your image! No longer it lump, more flat but BRIGHT orange!

@CharlotteR21 it looks like a Juvenile xanthogranuloma often abbreviated as JXG .If this is the case, they will go away on their own, but you should consult your Gp because they sometimes are a manifestation of another disorder.
Does he have some hyperpigmentation spots on his body?

We have been referred to a paediatric dermatologist as our GP doesn’t know what it is, since this post I noticed another developing on the scalp too so better to get checked xx

My daughter who's 7 months old has exactly the same mark on her head. Please do update us as and when you know more. We've two doctors in the family and neither know what it is.

Hi everyone we have been to the dermatologist but if I’m honest she was a bit rubbish! She did say she thinks they’re benign and not a concern, but she didn’t know exactly what they were she gave me a few options! I’m not really any the wiser. She’s going to ask more experienced consultants and get back to me so I’ll let you all know xx

After googling orange spots, this thread is the only picture that is spot on.
My 9 month old has a neon spot on his head, just like the OP photo. He's developed another one on the side of his scalp this last week. We have a Dr's appointment tomorrow so we will see what they say. Thankyou for updating xx

The nearest we can find is the following: nevus sebaceous is a rare type of birthmark that can be found on the face, neck, forehead, or scalp. While it can appear anywhere on the head, it most often occurs on the scalp. Though it's technically classified as a hair follicle tumor and is associated with other conditions, a nevus sebaceous is benign.

Just spoke to our doctors we are going in at 11am so she can take photos to send them off to a skin specialist. X

@TiredTattoodMama we saw a dermatologist at our local hospital. I don’t want to put her down but she was new this week to the job so I don’t think that helped her not knowing what it is. She also took photos and said she was going to ask a more senior dr. So hopefully I’ll get some answers soon. Would you keep me updated? As might help me find answers for my little one xx

Also someone mentioned JXG to me, so I googled and some of the photos do look the same. They usually go on their own but with these you have to be careful they don’t develop in the eyes. So I would like to know so I can watch for this xx

So we’ve sent photos to an NHS “hotline” and we’ve been told not to worry and it’s a hypochromic Mole and nothing to worry about. I’ll try and add a photo on here to share what Idas looks like.

We have a referral to paediatric dermatology. Once we've been (on hold due to covid at the moment) I will post what they say. We have 5 spots now!

@Mjs1234 are the new papules the same colour yellow-orange that maybe started red-brown, with a rubbery texture? Could they be Juvenile xanthogranuloma?
