My dc is under paed care (I have another thread about auto immune) basically he’s had explosive diarrhoea, mucousy stools and stomach ache since January. He’s had two lot of stool samples and all fine? Had bloods and all ok apart from Ana abnormal and low ferritin. He had those bloods re done last week to check. Paed said primal food intolerance, said 4 weeks dairy free, 4 weeks wheat free (currently half way through) and 4 weeks low fructose and ‘see you in a year’ Hmm

Anyway about 2 weeks ago he starts having blood in his poo/the water. GP not concerned and said probably piles. Today he’s told me he’s being feeling something ‘there’ in his backside, been feeling it a while, didn’t want me to look so I said probably piles don’t worry and if he would feel happy me checking then to let me know. He’s just called me and said it’s happening and let me look. It doesn’t look like piles, I’m petrified it’s some sort of prolapse? He said it happens when he wees, poos and sometimes randomly. I could see whatever it is sort of come out his back side as he was on all fours...... he said when it happened is when the mucous comes out. This is all new to me and I’m really worried. Do I need to take him to gp tonight?? What does a prolapse look like? Could it really be just piles? He isn’t itchy ...

So the Ana is normal apparantly. Now waiting for hospital to call me back. Hmm

He needs a referral to a colorectal surgeon. Whether this is done by the GP or a paediatrician doesn't matter but you need a surgical consultation to know the options regarding fixing the prolapse .

Ouchmyheadhurts · 09/09/2019 20:29

Still no call back from hospital! Back on phone tomorrow. What if the paed says to just leave it?? The nurse practitioner wasn’t remotely concerned about it!

Is this about his prolapse? If so it’s not her call, it needs assessing. Please contact PALS you’ve been messed around enough now

What a frustrating time you’re having. Your poor boy. :(
I noticed you mentioned steroids, is it prednisolone and what dose is he on? It can cause GI issues.

Ouchmyheadhurts · 10/09/2019 06:26

No he hasn’t had those steroids for years and only had them when he got chest infections. He has seretide inhaler and has also been on them since he was very young.

Yes she wasn’t concerned about the prolapse. I shall be making another call this morning at 9am for sure. So hard trying to chase them up all the time and work and keep him calm and general life on my own. Onwards and upwards, I will fight as long as I have to. I’m scared he will have long term damage as he thinks he’s had the prolapse all year Sad

Make the call to PALS (Patient advice and liaison service) at the hospital. www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/nhs-services-and-treatments/what-is-pals-patient-advice-and-liaison-service/

PALS for your local area

Ouchmyheadhurts · 10/09/2019 08:30

Thanks for the link, Iv only used hem once many years ago. Should i give them chance to call me back first? I rang yesterday about 2pm and I know the secretary isn’t there, that another one is covering...

OP posts:
Ouchmyheadhurts · 10/09/2019 08:47

I don’t mean give them days to call me back of course. I was going to try them again today. So many of the secretaries only work part time at the hospital, so if I go straight complaining to pals the secretary/paed will get arsey saying they’ve not had chance to action a letter that was sent a week ago... I won’t be letting it drop though. Maybe I’ll give them to the end of today.

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/09/2019 10:24

Personally I think you’ve waited long enough, he really needs the prolapse assessing properly.

Ouchmyheadhurts · 10/09/2019 13:29

I read the link as I don’t need a contact but need things agreed in writing? I’m guessing with regards to sick pay and holiday pay... is down to their discretion?

Sorry ignore that wrong thread Grin

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/09/2019 18:48

For that I’d speak to ACAS 😉

Ouchmyheadhurts · 10/09/2019 18:52

Thanks I shall! Have just started a new job just to add to the stress in my house! Pals calling me back re my son. I have phone apt with GP booked tomorrow afternoon. I feel like I’ll end up shouting Blush from what Iv read having a prolapse for a long time is bad and can lead to other problems yet the two health professionals Iv spoken to really aren’t that concerned! Tomorrow will be first time I speak to our actual GP about it.

OP posts:
Schuyler · 10/09/2019 19:06

Sorry, misunderstood about the steroids. Oh your poor boy, I don’t have any advice but much sympathy for you both. Flowers

Ouchmyheadhurts · 11/09/2019 14:32

Managed to quickly speak to gp on lunch break. She said it’s only been 9 days since the letter went to the paed about the prolapse and it’s too early to expect a response. She said i could go through pals but it’s too soon to expect them to have seen it. Now need to speak to pals Sad but I don’t know if it’s unreasonable to chase them? She isn’t too concerned. About the prolapse either. She said as he’s had it a while is better than it suddenly happening. She just said go to a&e if it gets worse or hurts or it doesn’t go back in. My poor boy. This is first day at school so first time I haven’t been with him since I found out. School have been great though thankfully

ShakeTheDisease · 11/09/2019 15:56

I would still speak to Pals as it's not just about the speed of a single letter but the general slowness in taking your son's condition seriously or even identifying what the problem is in the first place. This is a child in distress. I would expect better and a nudge from Pals now might be helpful. Hope you can get him seen soon.

slipperywhensparticus · 11/09/2019 16:05

Re the diarrhoea I am gluten intolerant I cannot tolerate oats they cause pain mucus and diarrhoea in me maybe cut them down? For now anyway

Blahblahblahnanana · 11/09/2019 18:38

I agree with ShakeTheDisease the issue isn’t the fact that the pead hasn’t responded to the most recent letter, the issue is your son is yet to be diagnosed and subsequently the diarrhoea has caused the prolapse and the pead hasn’t taken your sons issues more serious.

Schuyler · 19/09/2019 13:21

How are things this week? How’s your little one? Flowers

Ouchmyheadhurts · 19/09/2019 13:43

Ah Thanks for checking in that’s sweet of you. No further really other than pals made contact and the same paed agreed he needs to see him ASAP and awaiting a call to be given an appointment from the apt centre 🙄

Feel sorry for him as Iv had 2 calls this week about him and him saying he’s in pain. Nothing terrible i think he just wants to be at home and I really don’t blame him to be honest. School have been great though. He was trying to come home yesterday but he was ok, I spoke to him on the phone and he agreed to stay as he had gardening in the afternoon and one of the staff stayed with him out of lessons and he took the therapy dog for a walk on the school field which was nice.

He can’t go to the toilet at school as he says he feels uncomfortable and can’t do it so school days he isn’t opening his bowels that many tines. The prolapse really is the concern for me. He says it often throbs. Sad
