tonsillitis on antibiotics and co codamol

honeybooboo29 · 19/05/2018 22:58

Hey, I'm only 19 and my mum isnt here so i thought i would come here.
I went to me gp today as my throat has been very sore - very hard to swallow saliva and ive had a high temp 38 degrees. He said I have tonsillitis and gave me an antibiotic and some low does of co codamol (8/500).
The first time I took the co codamol I felt slighty nauseous, all my pain was gone and I just fell asleep. Then about 6 hours later I took another one (I'm taking 2 pills at a time) and witin miniitues I started shaking and mt pemreature rose to 38.2 again and i felt very sick after about 20 mins i had to throw up. Im feeling better now on an empty stomach tho :(
my doctor said that the antibiotics may make me feel sick but it had been over 6 hours since i'd taken them and he advised to take it with actimel which i did.
i was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem on co codamol and what i can do, also if you have any suggestions on what to eat as im now scared to eat anything!
sorry if this was really long, im just very ill and would like some advice :)

It's difficult to know if it was the cocodamol - it's quite a low dose. The shaking could be rigors from the temperature. The sickness could be from the temp or the tablets. You may be feeling better because the paracetamol in the cocodamol has helped to bring the temp down.
I would be inclined to persevere with the antibiotics and swap the cocodamol for soluble paracetamol.

My daughter would alway vomit with tonsillitis, the shaking is probably due to your raised temperature. I would probably swap to ordinary paracetamol and you could take ibuprofen too if pain becomes severe, but probably avoid if you are not eating as they can irritate your stomach.
For your age you can take 8 x 500 mg paracetamol in a 24 hour period and 6 x 200mg ibuprofen again in a 24 hour period.
Are you managing to drink?
Hope you feel better soon.

@NK346f2849X127d8bca260 heyy its reassuring to know that ur doctor also throws up when she has tonsillitis, ive taken way more than 8 paracetamol and it did nothing for the pain thats why my doctor gave me co codamol
also im trying to drink as much water as i can but struggling to swallow
havent had tonsillitis since I was 5 never imagined it would be this painful

My 19 year old son had his first attack of tonsillitis last year and hardly got out of bed for a week, don’t underestimate how bad it can make you feel. The antibiotics will take about 48 hours before you will probably notice an improvement, in the meantime take sips of water regularly as you don’t want to get dehydrated.

When are your exams? Are they A levels?

honeybooboo29 · 20/05/2018 21:25

yeahh x

they are in 15 days and im missing out on a lot of revision

I've had tonsillitis about 100 times, no joke. It's agony.

From experience, take 2 whole days out to just sleep, let the AB's kick in, and drink water (sips all day) and try to eat soft foods if you feel like eating.

If you take those 2 days to completely rest, don't stress about exams, don't think about anything else except getting better, hopefully you should be able to get back to revising quicker.

If you stress now, try and get on with stuff, your body will not thank you for it and you'll end up worse.

Co-codamol is great for pain, but addictive after a short time. AB's can make you sick, so can tonsillitis, but have never been sick on co-codamol.

Good luck, and hope you get better soon x

honeybooboo29 · 20/05/2018 22:11

wow thank you for your reply! ive been taking my antibiotics for 2 days now and ive seen no improvement - all ive been doing is staying in bed and sleeping when i can, i really really hopes this gets better soon. i want to go see my gp tomorrow but i dont know if there would be any point

also ive taken 9.3g of paracetamol over 3 days is this okay?

OP posts:
gluteustothemaximus · 20/05/2018 23:18

You need to be very careful with paracetamol. Dose is 2 x 500 mg every 4 hours, but no more than 8 tablets in 24 hours. So a maximum of 4g per day.

You’re not taking paracetamol and co-codamol together are you? Just checking.

The only times I didn’t get better with tonsillitis was when it was strep throat and when it was quinseys.

Hopefully day 3 might get better for you. It’s really shit, and so so painful.

Sometimes gargling salt water (warm) can help.

honeybooboo29 · 20/05/2018 23:29

yeah ive taken co codamol and paracetamol together but i included it in the 9.3g all together
so im okay as 4g a day would = 12g in 3 days which i havent taken?

Oh you poor thing!
If you are getting worse call 111 at any time.
Antibiotics can sometimes take a while to work but normally work within a day or so if they are going to. I would def go back to gp tomorrow.
Are you drinking enough? Managing to eat?

honeybooboo29 · 20/05/2018 23:49

yeah i will call 111 if i get any worse, i was told if my temp goes above 39 i should go to the hospital? i HATE going to the hospital esp because i feel like im wasting their time over tonsillitis.
i get utis very frequently and whenever i take antibiotics it takes the pain away with just one tablet. i am allergic to penicillin so the anti biotics theyve given me are probably not that effective.
also i take paracetamol/ ibroprofen every 4 hours, as soon as the 4 hours is up i get a fever idk if this is normal.
im trying to drink enough water but find it very difficult, ive only managed to eat 3 spoons of soup in 2 days now, but weirdly i dont feel hungry
sorry for making this so long xoxo

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 20/05/2018 23:55

I don’t think it matters what your temp is - rather how you are
Personally I would check your heart rate (count your pulse) - you might be getting dehydrated?
Be aware of the synyoms of sepsis or other more serious illnesses.
Hope you feel better soon - def go back to gp tomorrow as I agree antibiotics should have started working by now

honeybooboo29 · 21/05/2018 00:01

thank you sooo much for your help, i will be going to my gp first thing tomorrow

OP posts:
gluteustothemaximus · 21/05/2018 00:20

I don’t think I’ve ever felt hungry with tonsillitis. As long as you’re drinking water.

With the co codamol and paracetamol as long as you’ve added them up together and it doesn’t go over the 4g per 24 hours. As long as you’re alternating, and leaving the right gaps in between.

It sounds like you’ve got it really bad. There’s an AB I’m allergic too and I’ve had so many AB’s with tonsillitis, they started to become ineffective/longer to kick in and I ended needing a longer dose than most.

Definitely go to GP tomorrow. Hope you start feeling better soon.

honeybooboo29 · 21/05/2018 01:34

yeah i calculated the max amount of paracetamol ive had over the past 3 days is 9.3g so thats less than 4g a day, i get myself really worried about things like this.
oh wow you get them so often that must be so hard would you not prefer to have them taken out?
thank you :)

OP posts:
gluteustothemaximus · 21/05/2018 15:25

I'm all good now (although I give anyone with tonsillitis a WIDE berth) Grin

I had over 100 bouts as a child and a teenager, and very badly in my 20's (hospitalised) - but now seem to be OK.

honeybooboo29 · 21/05/2018 16:07

oh wow that must have been terrible
at least youre good now :)

OP posts:
IwillrunIwillfly · 21/05/2018 17:51

Hope youre feeling a bit better. If youre not eating just make sure that what youre drinking has some sugar in it and not just water/sugar free juice.

Can i ask how you worked out 9.3g of paracetamol? Each tablet has 500mg in it so 2 tablets would be a gram. Where did the .3 come from?

honeybooboo29 · 21/05/2018 21:45

ive only been drinking water
hahaha ive only noticed that my brain is so silly right now,, i even calculated it many times and came up with the same number
