High fever 6.5 month old

My 6.5 month old has been having really high fever , up to 40C since yesterday . Rang 111 and went to see a GP in a local hospital. Was told she has unspecific viral infection as they couldn't find the cause. Is it normal for them to have continuous high temperature after 24 hours ? I've been alternating calpol and nurofen .. The lowest it has gone down was 37.5 and will shoot up to 40C after 3.5 hours of medication. Other than that she's drinking fine and a little whiny.

I think as you've already seen the Gp and she's drinking, I would just keep on with the fluids and paracetamol/ibuprofen and keep a close eye on her.
Just remember a mothers instinct and if you think she's getting worse get her checked again.

Are you alternating calpol and nurofen at two hour intervals? Just wanted to check, purely because you've said temp jumps up 3.5 hours after medication.

I've been trying to alternate every 3-4 hours as suggested by the GP. But it's been almost 36 hours and the fever seems to be coming back again and again.. I'm starting to worry...

I'd say call 111 again. That's a horrible high temp for anyone, let alone a 6.5 month old. Is she having wet/dirty nappies as usual? Has she been exposed to any potential virus - I know bronchitis has been doing the rounds a bit and can be quite nasty.

You're the Mum - if you feel something isn't adding up seek more advice. Hope she soon feels better

Get her checked again if you are worried. 3 days of high temperatures could still be due to a virus, but there may be a secondary infection. Make sure they dip her urine to exclude a uti and also check her tonsils.

Poor little mite,at that age I would most definitely get another check up as there's been no improvement.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

I'd go back. Did they check her urine/ears? That's a very high temp for a young baby.
What are her other symptoms?
Maybe take her to an a and e where they might have a paedatrition? Gps can be a bit useless sometimes with babies.

Ds got an ear infection with 40 degree temps with every cold starting at 2 months. The cold might have been viral, but the ear infection was bacterial and had to be treated. The other important thing was that paracetamol didn't work at all on ds and nurofen had to be given in much larger doses than I felt comfortable doing without a doctor's advice. It was such a waste of time bringing him to A&E because they didn't know how to treat a newborn or by the second or third visit, I knew it was an ear infection, but they didn't know how to look into a newborn's ear. In the end someone told me about a pediatric a&e in the center of london that was a 40 min drive from our house, but worth every minute because as soon as we got there we were seen by proper pediatric nurses and physicians who knew what to do. I would definitely try to make sure you get somewhere where they have experience with babies.

Once, before I discovered the pediatric a&e, the stupid nurse at the local a&e handed me a pee cup and asked me to get a sample from my 4 month old ds!!!! I don't know how she thought I was supposed to achieve this?

They checked her urine and ears and they were clear. For her urine sample I inserted a cotton wool in her nappy and once it was soaked with urine , I pressed the cotton wool to express the urine into a sterile urine container. She has no other symptoms oddly.. Hence why the out of hours GP diagnosed it as non-specific viral infection. I'm ringing my surgery today to get a second opinion as her fever has been soaring. Sofia, may I know which A&E in London did u go to? Thank you everybody for your concern.

God yes urine samples are gods joke to mums! I've never been able to 'catch' one yet!

The Pediatric A&E had a urine collection bag that attached to the baby's crotch area. Much more practical and fit for purpose.

It does depend on your child how they respond.
Dd2 used to get temperatures, which shot up. If I caught it in time then fine, but if it hit about 39.5 it would then go up to high 40s even 41. It would sty there for three days with full dose of ibroprofen and calpol and then go away with nothing to show why.

She's wouldn't act anything like as ill as my other two would act if their temperature was 38.

One thing my GP said was that a high temperature isn't necessarily more indicative that there's a serious illness.

Her condition is pretty much the same as yesterday. I'm giving her full dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol as suggested by the GP. Her temperature will reduce slightly with each medication but will shoot up again between 2.5 to 4 hours up to 40c. I realised the OOH doc yesterday did not check her throat and I requested for my GP to have a look and her throat is a little sore but GP ruled out tonsillitis. So it's still unknown cause of fever. Ive been advised to give it another 48 hours and if still unchanged to go back in. :( I feel so helpless... She has just recovered from bronchiolitis and now this :( thank u everyone for being so helpful and informative ..

Oh really? So she's recently had an illness. I dunno how routine blood tests are for babies these days but I would probably ask for one if you find yourself still nursing her fever two days from now. You poor things :-( x

She's now refusing to feed as well. I have stopped feeding her solids and has been offering milk throughout the day. Will be ringing the GP tomorrow and if she worsens I will definitely go to A&E. 😔

If she is refusing to feed that is a worsening of her symptoms and I would ring 111 again. Has she taken any other fluids?
