High fever 6.5 month old

My 6.5 month old has been having really high fever , up to 40C since yesterday . Rang 111 and went to see a GP in a local hospital. Was told she has unspecific viral infection as they couldn't find the cause. Is it normal for them to have continuous high temperature after 24 hours ? I've been alternating calpol and nurofen .. The lowest it has gone down was 37.5 and will shoot up to 40C after 3.5 hours of medication. Other than that she's drinking fine and a little whiny.

She has just started refusing .. She was taking some milk but not great.. She's taking some water as well.. Definitely monitoring her progression and will ring 111 if she's refusing more than 12 hours .. Thanks ...

Are you bfeeding? Can you get some vit c into her? Poor little one. Poor you. I bet you are exhausted. My little one had temps of 39 and 40 when little. 3 or 4 days max. If you are worried do go back in but fever is a good thing. I don't think they recommend alternating nurofen and paracetamol anymore?

If ring 111 now if you haven't already - sounds like she needs to be seen quiet urgently. Don't wait for 12 hours!

Jenjen I really think she needs a review by a paediatrician. She has a high fever of unknown source and is now feeding less. It has been 3 days now. If she gets worse tonight then take her to your nearest paed A&E. She may need bloods taken and possibly a chest x ray.

Your GP can refer her to A&E if you get an emergency appointment and they are concerned or you can attend A&E in the morning (generally quieter then). No one will mind checking over a poorly 6 month old with her symptoms.

You can alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen if the fever is not reducing with just paracetamol and your child is in discomfort/unsettled with the fever.

111 can advise you tonight on whether it can wait until the morning.

Hi OP, hope all's well and you've managed to get some help. Please take her to an a&e to get tests done.

Please take your baby to a and e, ask for a sceptic screen to help determine the cause of the high temp. She may need antibiotics if a bacterial infection is found. There are some serious conditions which present how you describe and it's better to be safe than sorry. I don't wish to alarm you, but take her urgently.

OP - hope your little girl is ok xxx
