Bronchiolitis in 1 week old :( any experiences?

Ds is 10 days old we're in childrens admissions he's being monitored. He's feeding well seems quite settled. Dr clming back later say we should stay or can go but reading online it seems for babies very young a week stay in hosp would be normal?
I've got a toddler as well so will organise for her to have Xmas with my family.
Poor ds :(

Feel awful as I took him to dd's preschool party on fri so Ive exposed him to this virus :(

Congrats on your baby -

No experience in that young - but plenty in older babies Sad

It must be horrid to see such a little baby struggle with breathing -

Personally I would stay. Overnight obs on the ward will reassure you, and if he gets worse overnight you'll be in the right place.

Don't feel bad you weren't to know and you have your dd to think of too.

Same happened to us, 10 day old baby with bronchiolitis after going to her brother's nativity play at pre school. It was a horrid time. Stay in hospital if you can so they can keep an eye... They can go down hill quickly.

Often leaves them with a tendency to cough until they get bigger....our consultant said until she was 7 years old she'd be a coughed! He was right.

She's 15 now. All fine. No long lasting effects.

Thinking of you. It's bloody stressful xxx

Oh you poor things!

Bronchiolitis usually peaks on day 3 or 4 and gets steadily better thereafter.

The main issues are feeding and work of breathing so that if they're too congested to feed they obviously need admission, possibly for a drip or NG tube till the worst passes, or if they are working really hard to breathe (ribs sucking in, nose flaring, grunting etc) and tiring they may need oxygen to help them out.

The key is minimal handling- trying to minimise upset and just keep them cuddled and calm and feeding little and often. Antibiotics and steroids make no difference, it's just time.

Sadly it is tougher for real littlies to get through it without help, but it varies.

How long has he had symptoms for now?

Congratulations on your new baby OP.

DD2 was admitted when she was 3 weeks old. We stayed two full days and overnight. Best place for her at the time. They monitored her every couple of hours and put my mind at ease too.

Hope your DC recovers soon.

We were told it lasts 5 days, with day 5 being the peak of the symptoms, then it recedes. It's good you've got a diagnosis already. Good feeding is a good sign. Maybe express some milk (if you are BF) in case he needs a bottle as too tired to suckle.

I had to mix feed as I was so tired from the birth and my milk supply was not great. Did re-establish BF afterwards though.

Firstly don't blame yourself, you can't avoid bugs at this time of year.

If his oxygen and feeding are staying stable without help that's a good sign, personally I would probably be comfier staying in overnight just because these things sometimes get worse overnight.

A week in hospital would only be needed if they needed any extra support so don't worry about that yet, take it day by day, hour by hour.

Thanks all I'm happy to stay or go depending on what dr thinks- as we could come straight back he said.
Ds is ok in himself. The ward is pretty hectic lots of very poorly crying babies, shouting.
Just want him better and well for his first christmas.

Symptoms started sun morn but only had a few little coughs and sounded slightly wheezy when breathing. I only went to gp to rule out a chest infection and when she looked at his chest she sent us up to hosp as breathing looked laboured. Its not RSV.
Dr wants to monitor breathing next few hours then see if he needs any additional breathing support or not. If not he said we'll have open access for next few days so can bring him back to ward.

Have they done an RSV nasal swab?

No worries forgetmenot! I'm sure there's a range of a few days either side.

It's promising that he's in good form OP. Even if he does have to stay in the children's ward usually pulls out all the stops on Chrsimtas day- which is both lovely and a little bit heartbreaking to think about.

Congratulations on your new baby.

DS2 was admitted with bronchiolitis at a week old. He was born on Christmas Eve, 19 years ago, and the 2nd midwife said she couldn't stitch me up because she had a bad cold and there was a risk of infection. Poor little DS2 caught the infection. He was in hospital for almost a week and was on oxygen and strong antibiotics.

Hope he's better soon and you're home for Christmas.

We were in your position last Christmas, DS had it at 3weeks old, after arriving early at only 33weeks. I would stay in if possible as DS went downhill very quickly. He seemed ok during initial assessment but began having periods of not breathing, every 2 minutes or so, lasting 20-30 seconds each time. We ended up getting an ambulance transfer to an intensive care unit as DS needed to be on a ventilator to help him breathe. Drs said it got so bad because he was so tiny, only 4lb 8 at that point. Your little one might be able to fight it better if full term?
So it wasn't the best Christmas, 12days in hospital! Looking forward to a very quiet one this year!
Hope your little boy makes a speedy recovery.

Thanks all, we're here for tonight by the looks of it. Ds given some oxygen now waiting to see doctor. Nurse said keep our fingers crossed that we'll be home for Xmas so its likely that there's a chance we won't be :(
Poor ds and poor toddler I've hardly seen her since giving birth. Not got much in way if help so dh will need to stay with toddler and me here with ds as I'm breastfeeding.

It is utterly shit. My eldest had it when she was 10 weeks old, had a bacterial infection on top so did need IV antibiotics.

We were admitted New Years Day having spent the whole of NYE sitting up with her. Bloody GP had sent me away as paranoid first time mum whose baby has a cold. Luckily I trusted my instincts and we took her in. She was in for a week, needed NG tube (I was lent a hospital grade machine and expressed) and oxygen, and the above mentioned AB.

Like you I felt awful as we had been to family parties all over Christmas which must have been where she got it.

Flowers for you, don't worry about this Christmas, your toddler won't even remember in the long term though you always will! take care of yourself as well, one week post partum and still establishing bfeeding is a vulnerable place to be.

It's tough. DS was early and we spent his first 9 days in hospital, he then had broncholitis for what seemed like his entire first winter although never bad enough to be admitted overnight. We had a few sessions in the day unit though. We were told by a consultant 'this tends to happen to kids with older siblings' so don't feel bad. You can't cosset a second child like you can a first but they grow up tough.

Thinking of you, if you are near me, happy to pop in with supplies for you if DH can't manage it with a 3yr old. Will he be able to bring her into the ward?

DD1 had bronchiolitis but no admission when a couple of months old. Then again at age 1, with an overnight stay and nebuliser treatment.

DD2 had a more severe case at 6 weeks old and was in hospital for 6 days. She tested positive for RSV though, but so were a number of other children at the same time, so they gave us a ward together.

We were advised to not overfeed so that her stomach didn't restirct her lungs any more than they already were. And she was on oxygen up her nose but that was the only treatment.

My daughter had it at 10 weeks. We were lucky we caught it fairly early as my mum used to be a nurse and recognised the symptoms. I had been to the doctor 2 days earlier and they had just said it was a cold. We were in 4 nights and she was in an oxygen box most of the time. I seem to recall her oxygen levels on admission were around 90-92%(might be wrong though as a few years ago) she made a good recovery and didn't even seem to have a lasting cough.

Oh OP poor you and poor DS. Please don't feel it's your fault. It really isn't. It's the bad luck's fault tbh. That's what got you where you are.

I hope he's on the mend very soon.Flowers
