What's normal after taking worm medicine?

Dcs 1 & 2 crawling. Taken tablet. Seem ok a few days later. Obv still taking care and I'll prob dose again 2 weeks after tablet.

Dc3 is 20 months. He was wriggling, complaining about his bottom so it was assumed he had the too. Was prescribed the suspension and took it Thursday.

Thursday night was crap. So unsettled. Friday massive poo full of bodies. Night still seriously unsettled, up well over 10 times. 2 splatty nappies today, refused dinner, screaming at us, wriggly, tummy making odd noises, just wants to be latched on to boobs and not let go. Occasional farts and they stink to high heaven.

Please tell me this is normal and he will settle as worm are sent to their doom!

Tabs interfere with digestion of something... lactose? Which is why they starve the worms, upset tummy therefore not impossible.

We've all had the goo recently and found the farts somehow stank of the goo - very foul and sweet synthetic!

your dc3 would probably have been given pripsen suspension which does have a laxative effect - pripsen paralyses the worms and the laxative helps move them through the system. It has a different ingredient to the tablet (was that ovex?). Ovex starves them of sugars so they die a bit slower and i dont think ovex has a laxative effect either.

It depends which as well - ovex kills the active worms (but not the eggs, which potentially means eggs still inside dead females too - yuck) but pripsen just immobilises them rather than killing, however, it also acts as a laxative meaning that the worms, eggs, everything get expelled which is why you need to re-dose with ovex but not pripsen.

Sorry using brand names as I can't remember the drug names, but they work in totally different ways. Obviously if using a different brand then you'd have to check which it's equivalent to.

No it isn't the pripsen, that isn't available at the moment. It is a suspension of the same drug as ovex (mebendazole) so I know it will take a few days to kill all worms, just wondered if it was linked to the delightful poo we've been having. He has turned into an absolute boob obesessed grump . Hope it passes soon!

northern the farts are foul! I've not noticed the big ones who took the ovex tablets having them but the baby is rank!

p.s. you definitely need to redose with pripsen and only redose with ovex if reinfection occurs (or i would redose anyway just in case)

I didnt think that was advised for children under 2. Is pripsen out of stock then?

I've been told 2 weeks apart if there are signs of reinfection. Will definitely dose the older ones but not sure about the baby as the medicine isn't actually licensed for under 2 years old so don't really want to give more if I can help it. Ditto myself as I'm feeding. I've had one dose but don't really want to repeat. Will depend on symptoms. I'm assuming though that since baby is in nappies and vests/sleepsuits at night so can't scratch his chances of ingesting his eggs are minimal.

yes ilove, it isn't available. The Chemist rang round, then we spoke to the Dr to see about me and ds2, the Dr spoke to infectious disease specialist and so on . I was very impressed with the service!

Yes, you should be super strict about towels though, and handwashing after toilet (and nappy changes)/before eating or preparing food/when coming in from outside/any time you see them with their hands in their pants! Nail brushes are good too and keep nails short.

netdoctor says pripsen has been discontinued in the UK! Thats normally what should be used in under 2's

Oh we are being strict. I've taught the dcs correct hand washing, bums are washed on getting up and before bed, pants are worn if child not in nappy or pull up at night, each has own towel which is regularly changed. Changed bedding on treating and the following day plus had fresh towels daily in that time. Now reducing as need to wash some of our clothes too! But will likely do bedding and towels again Monday.

We were told to repay after two weeks as matter of course and proscribed enough for two weeks later!

Yeah I found it odd that the dose was the same, guess that might mean he feels it worse.

DD2 (3) was really wriggly and complaining about itchy bottom so I dosed all of us. The same night she was much better. I didn't notice a wind problem, but she is lactose free anyway, so perhaps that is why.

Oh dear Lord. nappy, sleepsuit, bed covers. covered in diarrhoea. like having am explosive newborn again but more stinky.

night 3 of being super unsettled, crying, complaining. Not surprised given what is coming out of him!

I should have left him with worms, he had just settled down a lot and did an 8 hour stretch the night before I have him the flipping medicine.
