Should we go back to hospital?

Just under a week ago oldest daughter (14) was sent to hospital by doctor who thought she had appendicitis. When we were there all nurses thought it was appendicitis and told us there wasn't realy a sure way of telling. My daughter was in a lot of pain by then, often to the point that she could not move and the nurses gave her a lot of stronger painkillers to have any effect at all. After all sorts off tests and her staying overnight another doctor came in a rush, poked her stomach for a few seconds then said he thought it was a burst cyst and it should heal on its own. We were them sent home with no painkillers so my daughter has been restricted to paracetamol which hasn't helped at all and she has become worse to the point where she can't stand up for long without collapsing with the pain. I don't want to go to a&e again and have the same thing happen but should I go just in case? I'm not sure wether to book a doctors appointment for her in the morning or take her straight to a&e?

If she is in that much pain the head to a&e.

If she is collapsing in pain it is not acceptable and I would not leave it until the morning. She needs to see the on call paediatrician in A&E.

Has she got a temperature and has she vomited?

Did she have bloods taken at the time? Is the on her right side near her pelvis? Is the pain worse when you push in or let go? Has she a temp? Nausea vomiting? If she is in such severe pain I would definitely go back to a and e and expect bloods to be taken and better painkillers. Hope shes feeling better soon. I wouldnt wait for gp tommorow either.

Please take her back and insist they do some scans!!! External ovarian cysts are very common and can cause the fallopian tube to twist with their weight and cause this sort of extreme pain or it could be her appendix and be needing urgent surgery.

Please take her back as soon as possible. My DD had similar symptoms and was initially dismissed by a GP as having gastroenteritis. Then after a terrible night where she was in excruciating pain she was rushed to hospital with suspected appendicitus.

They kept her in and quite quickly said that it wasn't appendicitus. It took 24 hours before they gave her an ultrasound scan to discover she had an ovarian cyst that had caused the ovary to twist 6 times. Unfortunately, in her case because of the delay, the ovary had died and it had to be removed. She was 11 years old at the time.

This is rare and I don't want to scare you, but please push them to give her an U/S scan as soon as possible so anything like this can be ruled out.

Let us know how you get on and I hope that she is much better soon.

She has a slight temp, hasn't vomited but has had an 'upset tummy' and nausea. She did have a blood test but we were never told the results, it is on her right side, lower abdomen area though she says the pain started by her belly button and moved to that area as it grew more severe. The main reason I'm hesitating about going to a&e is that my husband is away until next week and I also have a 6 yr old daughter and boy and girl 2 year old twins and its more than a bit daunting the idea of taking them to a&e with us so at least if I wait till morning they have school and are booked in the childminders whilst I work so I can take 14 yr old then.

I can understand why you are not keen but please don't delay, if it' her appendix and it bursts or her ovarian there are serious consequences. Have you no friends who would help out at all in an emergency? I would take your dd in and then try and palm of younger dcs then return to the hospital.

You would probably find that even vague acquaintances would be happy to help out under the circumstances, I know I certainly would.

My daughter was also collapsing with the pain and vomiting as it was so bad. Do not hesitate to call an ambulance if your DD is in extreme pain and unable to stand.

Does sound quite a lot like appendicitis. I think a and e is necessary. Bloods and an ultrasound a must(Im a nurse). Appendicitis pain is often worse on the release after pressing the area thats most tender. Is her abdomen soft or rigid? I would say she needs to be seen by a doctor today.

If she is a mature 14, could you not either put her in a cab to A&E or even call an ambulance and join her later when you had some childcare in place?

I'd ring an ambulance. DD will be getting medical attention (which she needs) at the hospital whilst you sort out younger DCs

If she can't stand up because of the pain then do go back to a&e pronto.

Ill phone round my local friends and relatives and see if one of them could take the younger ones for a few hours, tbh I'd trust her to go there on her own as she is very mature but would not want to make her go through such a painful journey alone unless I had too. When I pushed gently down it hurt more when I released it than when I actually pushed it down and it feels slightly firmer on the side where it hurts. Thanks everyone for help and if you have any more help with what should I do if she has to stay in hospital that is most welcome!

Please get her in as soon as possible as the symptoms sound so similar to my DD, including the pain starting at the belly button and one sided pain. Hers was on the right side as well and presented like appendicitis, and this is what delayed the diagnosis.

I'm sorry that you are going through this and hopefully you will be able to find someone who will be able to look after the younger children for you. I agree with another poster & suggest you call an ambulance as they can give her stronger pain relief straight away and she will get seen more quickly.

Another is alternative is someone that can take in your dd and wait with her whilst you have time to sort something out for the night for the younger siblings.

Luckily you were right RandomMess, my next door neighbour who I know but would expect her to do this offered to look after the youngsters so I'm just gonna grab them some clothes and stuff and then it's off too a&e... After that its watam I going to do whilst see in hospital... Not fun but thanks everyone for your help

Good luck Kara & just to repeat myself (sorry for going on about it) but please make sure they do an ultrasound scan as soon as possible. As a result of what happened to my DD, they have now changed their procedures at my local hospital.

Colleague had a similar nightmare with her dds cyst, in and out of hospital and took days and days to do a scan which they should have just in the first place!

Thanks chocolatelime, when we get there ill 'subtlety' point out that she hasn't had a scan. Hopefully they'll sort it out sooner rather than later, it's particularly frustrating as dd has just started year 10 so is doing gcses but her health is more important. Also if any of you have had this experience should I stay with her overnight or be with the younger ones?

Eek that is a tough one. I would try and find someone to come and look after the siblings if you can but failing that someone who will stay with your eldest. My experience of hospitals is that they expect someone to stay with children on the ward at all times!
