Should we go back to hospital?

Just under a week ago oldest daughter (14) was sent to hospital by doctor who thought she had appendicitis. When we were there all nurses thought it was appendicitis and told us there wasn't realy a sure way of telling. My daughter was in a lot of pain by then, often to the point that she could not move and the nurses gave her a lot of stronger painkillers to have any effect at all. After all sorts off tests and her staying overnight another doctor came in a rush, poked her stomach for a few seconds then said he thought it was a burst cyst and it should heal on its own. We were them sent home with no painkillers so my daughter has been restricted to paracetamol which hasn't helped at all and she has become worse to the point where she can't stand up for long without collapsing with the pain. I don't want to go to a&e again and have the same thing happen but should I go just in case? I'm not sure wether to book a doctors appointment for her in the morning or take her straight to a&e?

Do you know what the doctors plan to do? How are they going to find out what the problem is? Surely she shouldn't stay on morphine for too long unless there is an extremely good reason.

Hope she gets the treatment she needs asap.

I do hope that they have done the ultrasound. It is a 10 minute non-invasive test that can rule a whole load of things out that could be serious. If my DD had been scanned earlier, then she would not have lost her ovary. She was in terrible pain for 24 hours, that not even morphine would completely take away. The pain started to die away in the early hours of the morning and that was because the ovary tissue had died. By the time she was scanned at lunchtime the following day it was far too late. The whole experience will haunt me for the rest of my life as I feel that I should have done more.

I so hope that Kara's DD does not have anything this serious, but please make sure she gets that scan. Sorry to keep going on about it, but if she is in that much pain then they need to find out what is causing it.

Kara742 · 23/09/2013 22:14

Throughout today they were unable to do scans and although I did ask the nurses why they seemed pretty annoyed with the doctors themselves and assured me she will be scanned ASAP tomorrow and they are trying to use morphine as little as possible but it has been pretty necessary, thanks again for everyone's support xxx

Oh Kara, I am sorry that they haven't found any answers for you today and that your DD is still in pain. I feel very upset for you both that you haven't had the scan, but I am no medical expert & only have my own experience to draw on. We have to trust the doctors and I am sure that they will do their very best for your DD.

I wish I could do more than just type a few words on a screen. It's such an upsetting thing as a parent to have your child in pain and be unable to do anything about it.

Any news Kara? How's your DD doing?

chocolatelime · 24/09/2013 16:06

Thinking about you today, hope that your DD is OK and if she is still in pain that they have found out why.

RandomMess · 24/09/2013 21:29

Hoping that scans and things have happened today Thanks for you both

Kara742 · 24/09/2013 21:50

OMG it's amazing she's not more seriously ill, if you feel up to it perhaps it would be worth making a formal complaint about them scanning her the first time she was admitted etc.

I really hope the op goes well

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/09/2013 22:02

It's shocking that they didnt scan her earlier - poor love.

LoveSewingBee · 24/09/2013 22:05

So glad she is getting the treatment she needs but I am shocked and appalled that the hospital let her and you wait for so long.

chocolatelime · 24/09/2013 22:07

Your poor DD, what an awful experience for her. Can't believe she had to wait so long to get the diagnosis when she had symptoms throughout last week. Unbelievable that she had to wait so long for a simple scan that showed the issue immediately.

Hope you are OK Kara and managing to get some rest yourself. It is beyond stressful, but soon she will be at home recovering and you can give her lots of TLC.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow. Stay strong Thanks

sallysparrow157 · 24/09/2013 22:14

Glad they have worked out what's wrong and that she will be having her appendix out tomorrow. its generally a nice straightforward op with quick recovery, hopefully she will fly through it and be home in a few days feeling much better!
An inflamed appendix is often not that easy to spot on a scan (burst ones can be a bit easier to see) so a scan earlier on may not have shown anything definitive (though it would have shown it wasn't a cyst etc), very frustrating it didn't happen yesterday though!

LargeLatte · 24/09/2013 22:27

When she is home and eating and feeling well, may I recommend plenty of probiotics either in drinks, yogurts or the tablets you can get from holland and Barrett. My digestive system was ruined by a burst appendix but probiotics helped a lot.

BopsX3 · 25/09/2013 00:17

Ah Kara that's awful :(

Glad she's been diagnosed now though and they're actually doing something about it.

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery ??

SecretWitch · 25/09/2013 00:33

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. My 15 year old Godson had his appendix out a few months ago: within a week he was playing wanting to play football, much to his mum's horror! You must be exhausted, Kara, I hope you get a break soon too Flowers

QOD · 25/09/2013 22:46
