DS still asleep, what to do?

ClutchingPearls · 02/01/2013 13:18

DS is 15 months, been generally a bit grumpy for a week. Last night he was especially grumpy so calpol'ed him at put him to bed, he had a slight temperature. He hasnt woken since.

Waiting for an "urgent" call from GP nurse which will be this afternoon or possibly this evening.

Nothing specific, slight temp, was occasionally pulling at ears, decreased appetite. But he's completely un rousable, changed nappy with DD1 and 2 in the room jumping about and he just slept. He obviously is responsive because I've got a few oz of water into him and nurophen in him. But I cant wake him any more than that. So he's been asleep for 17 hours looks poorly but not collapsed. Occasional small cry but by the time I've got to his door he's asleep again.

So MNers should I call the GPs again, NHS direct or am I just wittling about nothing and let him sleep it off. DD2 has complex medical needs and I'm always on the ball with her getting her seen as appropriate. But a normal "abit unwell and sleeping child" has completely thrown me.

Sending get well soon wishes to your Ds

HQ - Lots of people seem unaware how dangerous CP can be. Is there anything we can do to highlight this?

BloominMarvellous · 03/01/2013 19:49

I do hope everything is ok. I have been thinking about you all day OP.

I was oblivious to the dangers of CP so maybe something could be written identifying the risks and things to look out for?

ILikeWhisperingToo · 03/01/2013 19:57

Just checking in. Really hope all is ok and your DS is on the mend.

miniegg1980 · 03/01/2013 20:07

ledkr · 03/01/2013 20:13

Hope it's ok to post this on here but my ds also developed complications from chicken pox yrs ago. Don't underestimate it when your dc get it.
Just wanted to add that to add weight to the warnings people can heed from this thread.
Hope he's ok op.

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 03/01/2013 20:22

Just saw this... Hope your ds is starting to do better today.

Take care of yourself too, it's very easy to forget to eat and sleep when your child is in hospital bit it's so important that you stay well too {hugs}

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Clutching

ClutchingPearls · 03/01/2013 21:18

Hi everyone, thank you so much for all your kind words and offers of help. I'm not in touch with my family and they would be worse than useless anyway but luckily we had 11 people over for Christmas lunch so have been able to call in the favour help with DDs.

Sorry for not updating earlier have to wait until I'm home plus I don't think it would have made sense before, it feels like I'm watching it on the tv, nothing seems to sink in. I've had to come home tonight to look after DDs but will be back in the morning.

DS is still sedated, he had a temperature spike over night but he's comfortable now. He's had some more scans and results back and they are confident it is the chicken pox that have caused all of this. All from three spots on his foot. I didn't see them when he was stripped off it was only at the hospital that one of the many doctors saw them. I feel so teary today, like its just sinking in, 3 bloody spots!, 3 spots mean the difference between him being well and him being in hospital. 3 little spots.

Doctors are happy with him, they want him nice and quiet until the swelling eases. They have said he will be with them for a while, no short cuts he just needs time. He's not the worse they have seen with this apparently babies can end up fitting because of it so although serious he's on the milder side.

Hospital has been very good, when his temperature went up they whisked him off to check the swelling and couldn't have been on it faster. Because his bed (he has a bed, still shocked he isn't in a cot, babies are suppose to be in a cot not still enough to lie in a bed with the sides up) is in a high dependency bit they have given me the parent room that goes with it and they were straight in last night to tell me he was worse but tonight I've not got that, so I'm paranoid the phones going to go.

Off to get something to eat, but thanks to everyone, I've read every post its been a great comfort that even though I've been a right plank not taking your advice straight away, you have all been so kind and thought of us. Thanks MNers, I can't explain how the support on here is keeping me going.

Clutching, I hope Mini-Clutching is hanging in there, as are you. I hope he is getting better, you are coping and that you all have lots of RL support.
I was thinking of you often today, whenever I saw a pocky child - many of them, but all of them not dangerously unwell.

For those of you who are wondering what to look out for, really what nannyof3 said: "Moral of this thread... If u cant wake ur baby... Its urgent ring 999 !!!!!!
It doesn't at the end of the day matter whether CP turns out to be the cause or another virus or Any Random Lurgy. Unrousable child = 999 ambulance. Get to hospital first, ask questions later. Same goes for adults, really, but they tend to not get that unwell then scarily quickly.

Clearly the GP's practice handled this very badly indeed, but rather than complaining about a specific receptionist (who, btw, have NO medical training whatsoever) I think major concerns about their policies and practices have to be asked. The receptionist v likely said only what she has been told to say. Which does not make it right, of course, but is a bigger issue than her 'incompetence'. We have very strict protocols in place for our reception staff to sound a klaxon (chestpain, loss of consciousness, significant trouble breathing etc) which stops all other normal procedures and either gets the on-call dr on the phone there and then or has HER call 999.

Doing a baby resus course can be a really good idea for anybody looking after young children - a scarey course, but also really reassuring to know what to look out for and how/when to act.
I never in a million years thought the Heimlich Manoeuver would work until I had occasion to use it and, my, it did! Blue child turned pink in a jiffy Smile.

rubyslippers · 03/01/2013 21:20

thank you for updating

it all does sound like it's sinking in now, so be kind to yourself and try to rest as much as you can and eat a little to keep your strength up

hospital care sounds terrific

PacificDogwood · 03/01/2013 21:20

Oh, Clutching, spectacular x-post with you!
Do eat and rest when you can. Sounds like he is doing as well as can be expected.

MummyPig24 · 03/01/2013 21:21

So glad things are looking better for him. Fingers crossed the situation will continue to improve.

incogneetow · 03/01/2013 21:24

Thanks for the update: so pleased he's in the right place to get the treatment he needs. Hope you manage to relax and get a good night's sleep, to renew your energy.

KateUnrulyBush · 03/01/2013 21:25

It sounds as though he is in good hands. Take good care of yourself, will keep you in my thoughts x

LegoAcupuncture · 03/01/2013 21:25

Glad the doctors are on top of it and he is settled. Hope he recovers as well as they are expecting.
