DS still asleep, what to do?

ClutchingPearls · 02/01/2013 13:18

DS is 15 months, been generally a bit grumpy for a week. Last night he was especially grumpy so calpol'ed him at put him to bed, he had a slight temperature. He hasnt woken since.

Waiting for an "urgent" call from GP nurse which will be this afternoon or possibly this evening.

Nothing specific, slight temp, was occasionally pulling at ears, decreased appetite. But he's completely un rousable, changed nappy with DD1 and 2 in the room jumping about and he just slept. He obviously is responsive because I've got a few oz of water into him and nurophen in him. But I cant wake him any more than that. So he's been asleep for 17 hours looks poorly but not collapsed. Occasional small cry but by the time I've got to his door he's asleep again.

So MNers should I call the GPs again, NHS direct or am I just wittling about nothing and let him sleep it off. DD2 has complex medical needs and I'm always on the ball with her getting her seen as appropriate. But a normal "abit unwell and sleeping child" has completely thrown me.

Hope your little boy recovers quickly and is back home with you very soon x

chinam · 02/01/2013 21:04

The poor pet. Hope he recovers soon. I agree with the previous poster who said your GP surgary need to be brought to book for this.

starfishmummy · 02/01/2013 21:09

Thinking of you and your little one, op

Blatherskite · 02/01/2013 21:09

It's stories like this that make the idea of Chicken Pox "parties" scare the shit out of me.

Hope your DS is OK Op.

Borntobeamum · 02/01/2013 21:12

💐 For you x x

BluelightsAndSirens · 02/01/2013 21:14

Yes once everything is back on track a letter should be sent to the practice general manager with copies sent to the hospital director.

The first phone call should never have been put on a waiting list, I'm assuming the surgery was open so the call was taken via reception with no appointments available versus call to ooh call centre who would have triaged the call?

It really is basics, is the patient responding to you? No - 999

And clutching is in way responsible for the course of events, she placed her trust in calling for medical advice and she was let down. Sends chills up my spine to think what would have happened if she didn't have mumsnet as a source of help in a time where she was so misguided by her medical practitioner.

Clutching, if you want or need any help in writing a letter/email I'm willing to help you.

Lots of best wishes and I really hope your sons vaccinations are all upto date.

Is that a secret cryptic code for something born? Grin

incogneetow · 02/01/2013 21:22

Hope he improves soon, and you're able to juggle everything else to be with him as much as possible.

cafecito · 02/01/2013 21:23

Hoping he is doing well. My DD had encephalitis and liver failure caused mainly by a virus- and I was in ICU with a little boy who had the same but his was just caused by vzv (chicken pox). He made a brilliant recovery. It can happen but it's excellent they have identified the cause so soon and once treatment commences recovery can be very quick. Thinking of you, OP, like someone else said, post if you need any help. xx

ZebraInHiding · 02/01/2013 21:23

Well done mn'ers! Have just read this thread now and it is amazing.

OP, so sorry to hear about your poorly ds. Hoe he recovers very soon. Don't forget to look after yourself as well.

LegoAcupuncture · 02/01/2013 21:24

Poor little boy. Hope he is better soon x

Carrotcakeisace · 02/01/2013 21:25

Just to say I'm thinking of you and your little man, take care of yourself as well as him

weegieman your dh is a star, say thank you to him- what a fabulous doctor (unlike the op's own practice)

rhondajean · 02/01/2013 21:28

I've been reading this all day while out and about and not been able to post, op I hope your little boy is ok, and I'm really hoping you complain about the go surgery once things are back to normal.

Poor little mite.

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel · 02/01/2013 21:36

How frightening for you all, I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

thisthreadwilloutme · 02/01/2013 21:44

Thinking about you. Hope your ds makes a quick recovery.

Level3at6months · 02/01/2013 21:47

I've just read through your thread - I so hope your DS is soon on the mend. My DS had similar complications following chickenpox after similarly woolly treatment by OOH Dr. Luckily 8 yrs on we have a super healthy boy, but cp talk always gives me shivers. I'll be thinking about you all.

Bundlejoycosysweet · 02/01/2013 21:48

Sending lots of get well vibes your way.

Wishing you all the best.

ILikeWhisperingToo · 02/01/2013 21:51

ILikeWhisperingToo · 02/01/2013 21:52

Bluelights v.good points made.
Really hope OP and DS are ok.

TheWalkingDead · 02/01/2013 22:05

I just wanted to say I'm thinking of your little one and you. It's terrifying when you can't rouse your ill child, and the GP should have immediately been ordered to call you, or the receptionist should have sought advice, especially when they
are so small.

DS2 had roseola infantum when he was about 14 months and I couldn't rouse him and he had a high temp. I called the GP and the receptionist was great, got hold of a dr and he demanded I bring him in immediately. Luckily it was only mild and treatable dehydration, but with small children it really matters.

Hope everything is peaceful overnight xx

GColdtimer · 02/01/2013 22:07

Really hope your ds is on the mend soon. Xx

Luciana123 · 02/01/2013 22:08

Absolutely agree withBluelights. I think I would demand an appointment with the practice manager and go with letter in hand. Surely it should be obvious what to do if you are properly trained as a medical receptionist. Shocking. So glad, OP, your gut told you it needed questioning.

MrsMushroom · 02/01/2013 22:12

zebra Im not being rude but this isn't the place to congratulate people or say how amazing the thread is.

OP I really hope your little boy is ok today...the doctor saying he's poorly but not more than any child they see regularly is a really good thing imo. How utterly terrifying for you to have the shock of all this.

I will be thinking of him and you.xxx

ZebraInHiding · 02/01/2013 22:19

Mrsmushoom. Blush I just meant that it was amazing that the mn'ers helped someone in need to get the help they needed.
