Is this true? and more importantly does it get rid of it?

Any other suggestions welcome.

Olive oil

Wolfiefan · 20/05/2012 18:11

Dentinox or olive oil. Isn't h and s full of chemicals? I wouldn't use it.

mandoo · 20/05/2012 18:12

A friend said her G.P recommended H&S!?

Don't use it on a baby I bought an unscented organic mild shampoo for Ds and his went in about 4 days

EauRouge · 20/05/2012 18:25

H&S is very harsh, I would worry about using it on a baby. Olive oil works well on cradle cap.

BikeRunSki · 20/05/2012 18:30

I've been using Almond Oil (no family history of nut allergies), but DD (7 months) has been on ABs for something else and her scalp has cleared up!

mandoo · 20/05/2012 18:40

Thanks all. Will avoid H&S then and go for the milder suggestions.

Organic monkey do a cradle cap oil that smells lovely :)

PestoPenguin · 20/05/2012 19:30

Am I the only one that picks it off combs it out then?

Irate · 20/05/2012 19:33

rub olive oil generously into scalp, leave for 1-2 hrs, comb out flakes hard against the scalp sort of scraping with a nit comb, shampoo as normal

EauRouge · 20/05/2012 19:36

I got told not to pick it off in case it gets infected. I just massaged oil in and left it to fall off on its own.

cluelessnchaos · 20/05/2012 19:49

Sun lotion every day for a week. Leave it on all day and wash off at night. I'd tried everything on ds2 until we went to Portugal last summer. He's not had it since

turnigitonitshead · 20/05/2012 19:49

funny you should post this, My dd 6 has had craddle cap up untill just a few weeks ago, she has been prescribed all the steroid capaseal etc under the sun since she was a year old. I forgot to take her capasal shampoo swimming at the begining of month and so just bought some head and shoulders as I weighed up that it may be the best non prescribed shampoo to use on the odd occcassion and she had had a clear clean scalp ever since so I would suggest based on my accidental experience that yes it could be true.

turnigitonitshead · 20/05/2012 19:51

if it is very thick you do need to lift it off as it will get infected my gp always told me to get as much out as I can manage as this prevents the fungal infections.

MarySA · 20/05/2012 19:53

I got told olive oil. You used to be able to get a special shampoo for cradle cap. But that was years ago.

mandoo · 20/05/2012 20:23

Might try the H&S on DS who is 4 but the Organic monkey stuff sounds good. Can't face trying olive oil, doesn't it smell horrible?

We use H&S (sensitive one) on DD when she was around 2yrs old because nothing else we tried seemed to work. She just had mildish persistant dandruff from thicker cradle cap when smaller though. It clearly up wonderfully and we stopped using it then. No problems with her skin with it either.

turnigitonitshead · 20/05/2012 20:46

i think olive oil just to lift the scales, once it is clear Mandoo I bet the H&S will keep it away, has been a miracle cure for my dd who has spent 6 miserable years with it.

difficultpickle · 20/05/2012 20:47

Coconut oil worked for ds's although he had loads and it took a time to go (until he was 5).

Downandoutnumbered · 20/05/2012 20:51

Watching with interest - I've been using the Dentinox shampoo on DS (2) who still has quite a bit of cradle cap, and it doesn't seem to be clearing it up. Could try olive oil but he's got so much hair it would be pretty foul.

difficultpickle · 20/05/2012 20:56

Dentinox didn't work for ds at all. Olive oil is quite thick which is why I was recommended coconut oil. Lighter and smells nicer too!

gastroenterologist · 20/05/2012 21:14

my DS had bad cradle cap until age 6 when we tried head and shoulders with immediate improvement

Clara35 · 20/05/2012 22:14

I find h&s works but cradle cap came back when I stopped using it. Vosene also takes it away (the nit repellant one) but it came back again once I stopped using it on ds. He's 4.

Elibean · 21/05/2012 08:29

dd1 still gets cradle cap aged 8.5 - watching thread with interest!

I used almond oil when she was a baby, and it worked beautifully - but obviously not going to do that now with her long blonde hair, she'd have a fit Smile

mandoo · 21/05/2012 12:03

I put baby oil on DS2 head last night (he is 5 months old by the way) and it actually already looks a bit better. It's not too thick to start with so I just don't want it getting worse. I am going to give H&S a go with DS1 who is 4. It's quite strange as he didn't have a flake until about 6 months ago!? He hates having his his hair washed so I can see a challenge coming on!

Thanks for all your suggestions.
