grandparents been to germany...

My dad came back from Germany last night and I went round today none the wiser to how serious the ecoli outbreak was, I would never have gone round having known this. Now I'm worried sick because my 2yo daughter has been in contact with him. He has no symptoms as of yet. I don't really know what to adk, just wondered if anyone knew anything more, and how worried I should be. Thank you

It cannot be passed on this way...the BBC state that it is EATING something infected that is the cause! Don't panic.

I'm sure e coli can be passed through bad hygiene too though? Not saying my dad has bafmd hygiene but human to human transmission of the bacteria is possible. I'm worried sick. I wish is have checked it out and known how bad it was before I went round. I feel so stupid

I hope it stays that way, I can't sleep worrying that I may have just been the cause if my child possibly becoming very sick.

Do you have any reason at all to suppose that your father has e coli? Apart from the fact that he has just been to Germany?

It is not as if everyone in Germany is sick - according to the BBC, there are 1,500 infections in nine countries (not just Germany). The population of Germany is over 80,000,000. The chances he will get sick are minuscule, and if he is not actually ill at the moment, the chances your DD could get sick are close to zero.

No, I'm just a panicker if that's even a word. I hadn't thought if it like that. I just switched on the news and wad hit by all the media hype and panicked.

My Sil is one of the 7 British cases (so far) and we all (Dd4, Ds12 and me) mixed with her and are fine.

Glad to hear your all ok solo and hope your SIL is ok. Yes ofcourse I would be worried about my dad, but my dad is a strong healthy man and my daughter is my main concern.

so what are we supposed to be doing? just washing all fruit and veg very well or not eating from certain countries? im a little Confused (and im 27 weeks pg)

Thank you. She had severe kidney pain and waterworks troubles for about a week and ended up in hospital for a week.

I think so.. that's the advice, but surely if someone has the bacteria and has poor hygiene and you happen to come into contact with them, it would spread that way too.

I think the bug is in the salad veg from certain countries. Washing will make no difference. I believe British and Dutch are fine.

All these bugs are spread by poor hand hygeine in the first instance from what I know, but salad veg are in the main water so perhaps it was because of contaminated water or soil that these things are now spreading bugs?

Thank you. She is exceptionally tired atm and in my opinion, went back to work at least a week too soon. She's a stubborn moo though!

Does anyone know how long after exposure the symptoms start? Won't be eating imported salads thats for sure!

Oh, for goodness's sake, this is all a pile of hysteria (about the salad, I mean). Solo, I'm really glad your SIL has recovered well - this is a seriously foul mutation and it's weird the way it's affecting mainly healthy middle-aged women. However, the latest news here in Germany is that the Robert Koch Institute has no idea which food actually caused the outbreak - it could be salad, it could be meat, who knows. Here in Berlin I've carried on eating lettuce and tomatoes as normal, and feeding it to my family as well (well washed, obviously). Maybe I'd be more cautious if I were in Hamburg, where there have been many more cases, but it seems to be geographically very limited to North Germany and people who've got it in Berlin have been up north beforehand. Solo, what part of Germany was your SIL in?

sneeze - as far as I know, symptoms appear about 4 to 9 days after exposure, but since nobody actually knows what the exposure is to, it's a bit difficult to guess.

MMG, Sil hasn't been in Germany at all. She's one of the few cases to have occurred in Britain. She eats a lot of cucumber funily enough, but doesn't actually know where the infection originated from. We worked back in time and it seemed to be from a particular weekend that we all ate a Sunday roast, but it could so easily have been from salad she'd had before or after. Nobody else has been ill and there were 9 of us at the same table, eating the same food stuff.

Thanks, I'm not too freaked by it and ate a salad with cucumber! today! I don't think it is that risky in UK or anywhere outside the affected area apart from isolated cases more connected to hygiene issue (not your SIL Solo i'm sure).

Its most likely to be from contaminated water to wash or water the salads, manure on the fields etc - so isolated to that area I think.
