Viral pneumonia help

dt1 has viral pneumonia was in hospital last wed for 36 hours. He's not getting much better and his breathing has been worse today.

The Gp saw him this afternoon and his Sats were 94, he's going to check them again tomorrow and maybe re-admit if still low.
He's been asleep since 6.45 but still breathing fast 50 Breaths per min, snd is clammy to touch.
He half wakes up moaning every now and then but is shattered.

Anyone had experience of this?

Btw he's been in steroids and an inhalour and has had a temp.

How old is he?

I would go straight back to a and e tbh rather than the gp. When Ds is ill 92 is the cut off where they start him on oxygen so I would want it monitored somewhere with the oxygen if needed.

Hope he is better today but don't hesitate to take him back if worried.

Thanks sirzy, he's 23 months. He's perked up at the moment still very pale and grunting but playing at the moment. It seams to be everytime his temp goes up his breathing gets worse. I gave him ibrophen (sp) at 5am and inhalour at 6am. Will keep watching him closely, his poor brother has the same bug too but without the scary breathing.

His temperatures up and his breathings got bad again, very fast and grunting. :-(

Take him to a an e, they can monitor his breathing and sats and treat as needed.

I agree that A&E is probably better than GP. Our GP simply sends us to the hospital anyway, but I know a lot don't and I'd prefer to be somewhere with the oxygen and so on.

When dd1 (age 8 at the time) had pneumonia they wanted her SATS on 97% or higher. Wait until gp closed and go to A&E.

Certainly get him more help (A&E would be most appropriate) if you are in any way concerned (more than already I mean!). Please be aware that little ones compensate breathing wise for a long time ie carry on playing despite the breathlessness, and then suddenly keel over. If his breathing is laboured take him to A&E.

24 - 40 is normal in 1-3 year olds. It will increase with fever. Aren't poorly babes a nightmare You will age 10 years overnight!

NICE guidelines are sats of 92% need pediatric assessment in hospital. How do you know it is viral? He needs a chest x ray, resps of 40 is high.
Children can deteriorate quickly, Aand E is hell but I would get him checked.
Your instinct as a mother trumps everything.

thanks, yes there's nothing worse :( , he doesn't have a temp at the moment, so will just keep checking him every half hour.
This bug started 2 weeks ago and both twins have it and ds, but only dt1 with the breathing problems, I've gone through bottles of ibruphen and calpol.
Just praying the girls don't get it too.

Just seen you were in hospital a week ago. You def need to be seen as he is not improving, make sure you let docs know he is grunting. This can be a sign of working hard to breathe.
I hope I haven't worried you but I would want you seen in hospital if you were my patient ( and my son has had about 15 admissions for similar so I know first hand how awful it is).

I second the 'order' to get him down to A & E. I've just got back from a few days in hospital with DD2 with a similar thing. Her waking sats were above the 94%, but at night her oxygen levels dropped dramatically. You need to get him properly assessed again i'm afraid.

Viral pnuemonia can develop into bacterial pnuemonia I think, so would def go back to a&e and have him checked. Night time can be worse than day so may be a good time to go.

Thanks all, his breathing got much better when sat up and awake and Sats at hospital were 98 and breathing ok. Took him home and checked through the night and much faster when lying down?
Seams ok this morning, still grunting and pale but playing.

Glad to hear he's feeling a bit better. I realise I'm probably telling you something you already have done, but have you propped up the head end of his cot/bed? If he's worse when lying down, maybe he'd be better not completely flat.
