Chicken Pox Scars - What else can I do?

Disorganisedmum · 22/05/2011 23:10

Mt DS recently had chicken pox - 5 weeks ago - had what I would consider to be a very bad case - so many on his neck he couldn't even move his head :( and has been left with many scars to his face, particularly near his nose and on his cheeks - remarkably his neck although looking scarred the scars are flat - unlike those on his face which are the text book crater type scars.

I have been putting bio oil on them twice a day for three weeks and am wondering if there are any other suggestions out there to reduce the scars. He is very very fair in colouring (white blonde hair and blue eyes and attracts many stares whilst we are out and about because of his continued spotty appearance as the scars are still very red). Apologies if this may sound trivial only I am desperate to do something - could cry each time I look at them!

All suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

Hello, so ten months down the line for us!! In terms of colour that's definitely gone, and there has been a marked improvement but there are still 6/7 between my daughters eyes / forehead which still look really obvious in terms of their depth. No one really comments anymore but they are still far more prominent than I would like!! Does anyone have any thoughts / words of advice? How are others getting on from around the same time?

apox · 17/03/2018 23:07

Sounds like we are at the same point as you. We are about 9 months post CP and the colour has also faded. There are a few on her cheeks but like you it is the ones on her forehead that are really noticeable and pitted. The strange thing is I'm sure some days they look much worse than others, but I guess this might be lighting or how dry her skin is?

I am wondering if this is as good as it is going to be or if they will continue to gradually improve. I have been researching treatments and we may give micro-needling a try.

Dweet1259 · 17/03/2018 23:20

How old is your daughter? I'd read about that as a treatment but wasn't sure of they'd have to be 16/18? I know what you mean, some days / lights are much better than others and they don't show in photos now which is a good thing!! I just hate the thought of her growing up and being self conscious of them!!

Dweet, PM sent.

musicalfrog · 31/03/2018 08:04

Does anyone know if bio oil is any good for reducing the craters on a new scar please?

apox · 08/04/2018 11:23

Moisturising is certainly supposed to help. We used epaderm/cetraben as suggested by a dermatologist.

nicolle1975 · 24/01/2019 07:32

Good ktmummy1, Can you tell me how scars are now after many years? My daughter had chicken pox one month ago and I'm worried about the scars. Thank you!

I know this was an old post but I would love to hear how you got on. Did you take your child for any treatment with plastics? Have you seen improvement in her chicken pox scarring.
I’m desperately hopeful for positive stories 🙏

My brother had a terrible deep burn on his hand and he used CBD oil on it, honestly it healed completely up within 12 days. It was quite miraculous.

The nurse who was responsible for changing his bandages was gobsmacked.

herewearenowentertainus · 03/06/2022 21:01

Also wondering if anyone has had any improvement with any treatment?

My dc still have pitted scars 5 years on, a very slight lessening over that time is all I can say I think.

wondered about microneedling bought a home little machine, I’ve tried it on myself twice (monthly intervals needed) no difference made as yet, thinking to try a year to see if does anything for 1 small pitted face scar I have to know it works. Intended to try straight away for dd 11 but it’s quite painful and when I tried numbing cream she got an angry rash after a few minutes and had to wash it all off unfortunately.

Chicken pox scars will remain in body for more than a year. I also facing this issue, one of the worst thing is, chicken pox scars in my face more than a year. Later I will disappers one by one. Right Now I m ok, so please be patience.

Missmiller · 06/06/2022 17:07

My dd had chicken pox in 2015, she had a severe case. The pitted scars are still there on her face but I’m guessing as she has growth spurts during her teen years, they’ll fade more and her complexion will change anyway! There’ll be spots and acne to worry about then.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/06/2022 17:09

They'll probably fade dramatically over time but I would use a cream with silicone in it rather than Bio oil.

LDN1 · 07/06/2022 11:31

Can I ask you all (and maybe it's been mentioned already) - but did anyone give their child Ibuprofen when they had chicken pox?

The reason I ask is, our DD got chicken pox around four months ago... went to the doctor and the doctor prescribed Ibuprofen. I went to the on-site pharmacy and got chatting to the pharmacist, who asked what it was for... I told him and he just paused and said 'you do not give a child with chicken pox, Ibuprofen... as it can cause deep scars.' So of course, confused by what the doctor had just said (the opposite) I checked - and the pharmacist was right. It's even on the NHS website.

Be warned... some doctors truly have no idea what they are doing and I suggest checking / double checking everything they say.

We managed to avoid a potential mishap.

Hi, just wondering how are your children's scars after all these years. My daughters had chicken pox a month ago and are covered in scars. I know the red will go away and the big craters would probably stay. But what about the small indents?
Thank you!

Xxhgxx · 10/08/2022 15:18

@Judit83 i am also interested to hear how the scars have evolved over the years - my dd had CP three weeks ago and left with two craters on forehead and small indents on chin and between eyes :(

Judit83 · 10/08/2022 16:34

@Xxhgxx I am using solutions for scars on my eldest, and it seems to work, some scars have filled in already. The ones on her face don't worry me anymore. Not much luck for her sister though, she has lots of indents on her face. She had chicken pox two weeks after, so I am still hoping they will fill in a bit in the next weeks. Are you using anything?

Xxhgxx · 10/08/2022 16:38

@Judit83 did your eldest have quite a few indented scars on face ? For the moment I’m using cicalfate plus from avene and repairing cream from aderma - I’m alternating between the two and then loads of sun factor as we are in Greece so not ideal at all !!!

Judit83 · 10/08/2022 16:56

@Xxhgxx She had one beside her nose, on the cheek and two below her nose, they have filled in, so I have hope. They are still very red, but i know this will fade. My youngest has one on her nose, far too many on her forehead, and some beside her mouth. Most of them are quite small comparing to her sister's, but she has lots of indents on her face. I feel the sun has helped my eldest because the ones on her face have filled in quicker that the ones on her body (still lots of indents). I use rosehip oil and bio oil too, I think the combination of different products helps too. But solutions for scars is the best, for me. It is so reassuring reading posts of other mums stating that the scars have improved or disappeared. Thank you so much for these posts, they really make a difference to me!

Xxhgxx · 10/08/2022 21:21

@Judit83 will try solution for scars!! Amazing that the indents have already disappeared so quickly on your eldest - I’m sure this will be the same for your youngest especially if they are small indents - my daughters body is covered with indents and in 10 days the holes have shrunken so much - I’m slightly more concerned for my dd’s face whixh has a few small indented scars on chin and between eyes and two bigger red indented scars which are half a cm - went to see a dermo who said difficult to say today how they will evolve as takes a year for the sunken scars to evolve.

Hi, I know this is an old thread but do you have an update on your little ones pitted scars? My daughter had CP 3 weeks ago and her face was covered in really big nasty deep pox, she scratched a few off as toddlers do but even the ones she didn't have left light pink crater type holes which are so upsetting. I tried absolutely everything to ensure it was the perfect healing enviroment. Her perfect face is full of crater type sunken marks 😥 I'm beyond devastated 💔 I wondered if you could post an update please?
