Chicken Pox Scars - What else can I do?

Mt DS recently had chicken pox - 5 weeks ago - had what I would consider to be a very bad case - so many on his neck he couldn't even move his head :( and has been left with many scars to his face, particularly near his nose and on his cheeks - remarkably his neck although looking scarred the scars are flat - unlike those on his face which are the text book crater type scars.

I have been putting bio oil on them twice a day for three weeks and am wondering if there are any other suggestions out there to reduce the scars. He is very very fair in colouring (white blonde hair and blue eyes and attracts many stares whilst we are out and about because of his continued spotty appearance as the scars are still very red). Apologies if this may sound trivial only I am desperate to do something - could cry each time I look at them!

All suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

She should be ok. Don't worry too much. But go and get her seen by a doctor / skin specialist who will be able to put your mind at rest.

My daughter had huge holes on her face and 9 months forward you can hardly see them they’ve filled up - the ones on her body whixh were holes are now flat and white some are slightly raised but hoping these will improve overtime - she was covered all over body and face -

Hey chic this came up as a notification for me and I'm 8 years down the line. My daughter was 4 when she got chicken pox and got a really deep one on the end of her nose. The scab knocked off putting her uniform on and it was deep omg like u I was devastated researched everything tried creams etc and honestly i hurt that she would be scarred. My daughter is now almost 13 and it's still visible although not as deep. Being a girl I thought omg it's going to bother her and honestly she said "she loves it" it doesn't bother her at all. I have worried about this for years and now ask myself why. It's part of who she is and part of her journey. she said it's what makes me me ♥️ I've noticed with her mates they have some on their heads, noses, cheeks and do fade)stretch out with time. I will honestly say mate I know how Ur feeling but trust me Ur more bothered than she will ever be xxxx hugs xxxx btw I tried aloe gel, bio oils and massaging it at night with moisturising cream. Can't say if it made a difference or not but you let her grow up being the beautiful girl she is inside and out and she will love the skin she is in I'm sure xx the fact Ur posting here shows Ur a mint mum and that's all that matters xx hope this helps comfort u a little xx

Hi, Hannahamym I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter, I remember very well those days and the upset. Impossible to believe at the moment but it does get better. Please be kind to yourself.

An update on where we are at now that I hope may help. We are now 12 years on and my son is a nearly 6 foot 17 year old. Over the years the scars have definitely reduced, once the redness faded they also became less noticeable. Shortly after having CP he had numerous scars across his nose and cheeks mainly. Over the years these have certainly reduced in number and become a lot less pronounced. Some are still there, but so are the scars from a trampolining accident, hockey stick injury etc and as he has grown the deep ones became less pitted as his skin grew and features changed. I know they are there and can notice them but don’t ‘see’ them anymore and don’t feel he does either. For a long time they were all I could see.
One of the other concerns I had were about what others would say. in all honestly there have been one or two comments but nothing too major throughout his school life and these have come from others asking why he has the scars. There have been times he has spoken of wishing they weren’t there but over the years we tried to support him to accept them. This stance has worked for us but I appreciate others will want to focus energies on minimising scarring further and I don’t feel I can comment too much on this. We tried bio oil for a while, aveeno and other topical treatments but this just emphasised to him that they were there and that focus wasn’t right for us but it’s really encouraging to read some of the other posts on the thread where people have had some positive results and I hope those have been a help to you.

Take Care and if it would be helpful then feel free to PM me. Xx

Hi all,
Reading all your posts about chickenpox scars is really informative. My 7 year old had chickenpox 3 months ago. He had a lot on his face some really big and severe. There are two still quite red but one is really worrying me. The red spot now has 6 thin red lines coming out from it on his cheek. I have taken him to two doctors but they don't say much about them, just that they are from chickenpox and nothing really can be done.Has anyone ever come across this? I'm quite concerned about it and would love some information on what it is and if it will go away.
