Following on from this thread

She has had a chest x-ray but the doctor just said to rule things out. What are they looking for? He said her chest was clear when he listened to her.

She seems fine in herself.

We played a game and acting normally. I think she has got used to the pain.

Northernlurker · 26/03/2011 13:16

I think you need a CRP blood test done - marker for infection.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 13:21

I don't know whether to wait until I can take her to see the same GP again, try out of hours doctor or go to A & E. DH thinks we can wait a bit and see how she is tomorrow. My instincts are not working at the moment as I am scared.

I have not heard of a CRP blood test.

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 26/03/2011 13:29

Basically (very basic) CRP is a protein in the blood and it rises when the body has inflammation or infection. It shows something is going on - but not what that is. If your dd has pleurisy say, CRP would be raised I think.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 13:32

Thanks for that. I don't know whether to wait and try and see the GP again (and therefore taking DD out of school again) or to go to A & E or try OOH doctors.

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 26/03/2011 13:36

I think I would be inclined to try A&E tbh as it know hurts when she breathes. Ask them to do a blood test at least.

Northernlurker · 26/03/2011 13:38

Actually thinking about her other aches and pains and fatigue I think I would take her and ask for CRP and full blood count, not leaving till results were back.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 13:45

I am going to talk to dh. She has a ballet show tonight and I want her to be able to do it and enjoy it.

I asked her if it hurt more when she breathed or when she held her breath and she said the latter.

OP posts:
grumpypants · 26/03/2011 13:49

I think you are maybe at risk of getting her a bit obsessive about this - you keep asking her what hurts, where, in what way etc. You have had lots of tests and are now waiting an MRI? And she is okay enough to do ballet and ballet shows? Why not leave it for the rest of the day and see if she compains, unprompted, rather than answering your questions?

A and E is really for an emergency, and the out of hours will prob know less of her history, so your own GP might be more sensible?

Obv I have no medical training, so feel free to disregard this.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 13:51

I am ringing the out of hours doctors now.

OP posts:
FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 13:52

The MRI is for something else.

She is in constant pain and has been for over a week. I am trying to find out what is wrong. So yes, I will disregard your post.

OP posts:
didldidi · 26/03/2011 13:53

Can't she go to the GP after school? I agree with grumpypants. Your DH has told you what he thinks.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 13:53

And no, we haven't had lots of tests.

OP posts:
grumpypants · 26/03/2011 14:03

ok, i just meant in the last week you've seen the doctor twice, and had a chest x-ray, urine test, and her chest and temperature are fine. She is also attending ballet lessons and performing well. You seem to be getting prematurely hysterical (I can't eat; I am dizzy etc etc) which is unnecessary at the moment and possibly unhelpful. We all worry about our children, but at the moment you can probably keep calm and try to find out what is (if anything) wrong by taking the advice on here re: blood tests and seeing your gp. Good luck.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 14:10

I will not apologise for worrying about my child and obviously you don't know her history. I am dizzy, etc as I am ill myself.

Only on MN can you be got at for worrying.

Friendly post here:)
How are things now? What did the on call dr say?
How have you been?

It is understandable that you are worried...you are a mother that loves her dd and doesn't want io see her in pain!
It would be better if you didn't get so stressed about it that it affects your health, but I also know that if my dd was having pain and I wasn't happy with the explanations drs were giving me I would be wreck too probably :)

It is easy to tell people not to worry, but very difficult when you do worry to have to stop! I am glad that painkillers helped her. Keep giving them regularly.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 21:12

My dd had 2 physical problems when a baby but I was dismissed as neurotic as I had PND. It took 9 months but I was proved right. I will not fail my dd like that again. I am also ill myself and maybe the worry of that is adding to it, I don't know.

We saw the doctor, he said her urine was 1+ protein and if she wasn't starring in a show i think he would have sent us to hospital. We are to give calpol and nurofen for tonight and tmw and then go back if it is still the same. His diagnosis is mesenteric ademitis or subacute appendicitis.

moosemama · 26/03/2011 21:28

FFF, so glad you have finally been listened to and someone is taking it seriously.

I guess you'll be back there again tomorrow, as its unlikely to suddenly resolve itself overnight.

I hope you get a definitive answer from them tomorrow and your dd is feeling better really soon.

Hope the show goes well for her again tonight - what a little star carrying on with her ballet when she's in all that pain. Smile

Oh and I hope you are better soon too. Smile

Am36butfeel66 · 26/03/2011 21:46

Finally a dr with sense!! It is just awful that you have had to battle all week to get some acknowledgement for her pains. They will probably suggest that your dd has an ultrasound scan to see if it confirms his diagnosis.

They will probably do blood tests including crp, full blood picture, and electrolytes to see if there are any signs of inflammation on her appendix.

I hope you sleep a bit better tonight now that the drs have finally agreed that your dd is unwell. You proved yet again that you are definitely not neurotic...just a pity it has taken so long for drs to listen to you.

FourFortyFour · 27/03/2011 09:26

Thank you.

He seemed to want us to wait until Monday to see a GP who would then send her to hospital as he said everything is "open" then as it is a week day. Paediatricians are there on week days. The problem with that is I might not even get a doctor's appointment, he might not agree to write the form to send her to hospital for a scan and she has to miss more school. He initially said we could go back to OOH or hospital today and then said about waiting until Monday.

OP posts:
Am36butfeel66 · 27/03/2011 09:42

I would probably attend a+e on Monday with her rather than gp, as gp will have to book an out patient appointment which takes longer to get, whereas if you attend a+e scans can be done usually there along with blood tests that day.

How is she feeling today after her concert? Is she in more pain? Did the concert go well?
Who should see how today goes and take it from there. You never know, today she may feel a bit better..but if she doesn't then have a plan in your head of what you want to do next.

FourFortyFour · 27/03/2011 10:28

Can I just turn up with her at A & E and give them the piece of paper where the doctor has written down the 2 possible diagnosies?

OP posts:
stealthcat · 27/03/2011 10:48

A+E isnt really the best place to go. Your DD has been seen by lots of different people and had various investigations - your GP is the best person to be co-ordinating all this.
If on monday your GP still isnt sure what is going on then it might be worth asking to see a paediatrician.

FourFortyFour · 27/03/2011 10:52

Why isn't it? We were told to go. And if she has the second diagnosis that it the prelude to acute appendicitis and with respect, no one is co-ordinating anything as we have had several doctors look at her with 2 saying they don't know what is wrong and constant pain in a child can not be right.
