Following on from this thread

She has had a chest x-ray but the doctor just said to rule things out. What are they looking for? He said her chest was clear when he listened to her.

Just seen your thread, and agree that you should take her today to a different hospital to get an xray. It may be that she has a wee viral infection in lung that is giving her pains in her muscles too?.. But at least if you go to somewhere different and do xray you will get results today which will help both if you. Pack a picnic for the two of you and some games to play and head to a and e (waiting times can be long...but picnic and games will help :) ). Your ds may have same bug as dd if he is coughing...?

Pioneer · 24/03/2011 09:43

I was under the impression that X Ray results were read there and then (ie with broken bones) etc. I'm sure that it can't be anything serious if they are saying it will be two weeks for the results.

Having said that, two weeks is too long for her to wait in pain - if it is constant and she is crying a lot then I would take her to A&E, if she is coping then I would take her back to the doctor and ask if some bloods could be taken, or ask if they can explore further.

Hope the little lamb is ok x

moosemama · 24/03/2011 10:31

FFF, I would take her to A&E at this point and I would want to them to take bloods as well as another xray. She's obviously getting worse and nothing is going to be done for at least another week if you leave things as they are.

As Pioneer said, if she was coping well and it was just a bit of pain or only occasional it would be a different matter, but she isn't coping if she says she's in too much pain to go to school.

I would really try and get some answers today if I were you.

Good luck x

DH came home. I googled and it does appear it could be growing pains (I remember them really bad but when older than dd is now). I gave her 2 spoons of calpol and dh said to send her to school as she was skipping in the garden. I got to school and she said she felt sick and dizzy and then went off to skip. DH is worried about radiation as she has had 6 x-rays already in her life and has an MRI next month. I know you are all saying the right things but I am scared.

OP posts:
moosemama · 24/03/2011 11:02

Sorry, if you don't want to tell me, but what's the MRI for? Is there any chance that what she's being checked for on the MRI is somehow related to what she's currently experiencing?

I do understand your concern about radiation and xrays, especially if she's already had quite a few. It might be worth mentioning though that MRIs don't use 'radioactive' type potentially harmful radiation. This link is useful in explaining the difference.

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 11:17

The MRI is because she has been complaining of headaches so I took her to the GP and optician. The GP said calpol for a couple of days and then see. The eye test was fine. Back to GP and she was referred to hospital. Diagnosed with sinisitis and was given 2 weeks of antibiotics. That helped a bit but not cured. Back for a follow up visit, saw someone different and she implied I was causing it as I was worrying. The MRI is to have a proper look.

Just phoned my MIL and she said see how she is at pick up time and then assess.

I am wondering whether to ring the normal gp or nhs direct. I can feel myself getting scared and that is no good to anyone.

FourFortyFour just take her to a&e. this pain seems to be far too intense for growing pains. I would not want to take any chances esp as she also has other unexplained issues (headaches).

and do not worry about radiation - any short haul flight will give her more than a handful of x-rays.

It is difficult when the symptoms don't clearly add up to something obvious, but with my dc's I tend to be more suspicious of vague symptoms these days.

Have a read and print out these links to take with you:

Back Pain in Children

Back Pain in Children 2

(sorry I know parts of them are a bit scary, but it does highlight why she needs to be seen) and do what I do - tell them you weren't sure what to do, but were bullied into coming along by a friend who gave you the links. Wink

It sounds like you are very anxious, I'm much the same and can do a great line in avoidance myself, but when it comes to the dcs I just grit my teeth, put my brave hat on and get on with it.

Pioneer · 24/03/2011 13:06

If you feel scared etc yourself then perhaps you should note down a list of her symptoms and timescales to take with you to the hospital.

It will probably help them to get a better idea of what is going on, rather than you having to explain it.

People tend to ramble a bit when they are frightened or worried.

Pinkjenny · 24/03/2011 13:09

FourFortyFour - I am sure if it was anything serious you would have been called back in by now.

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 13:32

Thank you. I have just put the main computer on to print out the links.

I feel ill. I can't eat and when I force myself it goes straight through.

OP posts:
Am36butfeel66 · 24/03/2011 15:37

I know it is hard, but do try not and get worried too much as you will only end up ill yourself and then you will be no use to your dd. Best to try and be proactive and get her to a+e. A gp doesn't have xray eyes and will only send you for tests if needed to the hospital, so I would just go straight there instead with picnic.

Also stop googling!! It really doesn't help unless you have a diagnosis, then it is helpful to know what others say about an illness or treatment etc.

If you 'googled' a sore finger caused by a paper cut you will probably end up convinced that your finger needs to be amputated! Instead of just needing a clean and a plaster.

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 16:08

CHEST xray come back fine

grumpypants · 24/03/2011 18:05

You really need to write down why you are so worried about back pain in your apparently otherwise healthy dd in order to feel that you have explained yourself properly. Make a list maybe of what tests have been done, and what is still concerning you, so that you can mention everything in one go? (IE cd headaches be linked?)

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 18:20

I will, thank you. I am neither use nor ornament.

OP posts:
Am36butfeel66 · 24/03/2011 20:17

Try not to be so hard on yourself, you have use, you care about your dd so much it is obvious to see, and you want what is best for her. As you are the person that knows her the best you are best placed to fight to get to the bottom of her pains. As Grumpy says go to drs armed with all the info that is bothering you about dd,... Her pains, dizziness, feeling sick, disrupting her sleep etc...

Explain how worried you are, and that you want your dds symptoms to be treated seriously and investigated. Explain what your dd is normally like, and how these pains etc are affecting her now.

Hope it goes well at dr

FourFortyFour · 24/03/2011 20:21

The GP we are seeing is lovely and gets me so I hope it should go okay.
