Following on from this thread

She has had a chest x-ray but the doctor just said to rule things out. What are they looking for? He said her chest was clear when he listened to her.

Hope it all goes well.

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 11:52

Right, I have taken her to the doctor's again. Urine, chest and temp fine. I have to give her nurofen for the next 2-3 days on a regular basis and then see how she is. I have to watch how she is in general.

444, this sounds like a non-specific viral infection, there are loads of them around at the moment (change of season innit...am just recovering myself)

Children react to them in very different ways than adults

They can say "tummyache" when they mean "headache", they can complain of "hurting all over" because they don't have the language skills to pinpoint it etc etc

The aches could be muscle aches due to the virus. Ditto the headaches.

If she is attending school, skipping around the garden, running around, has had a CXR, bloods, urine test, has no temperature and been seen by both hospital doctors and GP then she should be fine but may be picking up on your anxiety

Try to carry on as normal and see if she picks up your cue and continues to recover from this virus. Some of them can linger for ages (I am in my 3rd week of mine..) but really there is nothing more to be done than let them fizzle out by themselves.

Good luck, and hope she is 100% better very soon x

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 12:13

She is not picking up on my anxiety as I wasn't showing any when she first told me she was in pain. This has been going on for nearly a week now. She is extremely bright so can express herself. She has other problems too so it could be that so we will medicate her for 2-3 days and then see how she is then and reassess.

how is she this afternoon ?

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 15:58

She said the pain is still the same.

She has had an early tea as we need to go out soon and she seems fine in herself but she always is.

OP posts:
PeterAndreForPM · 25/03/2011 16:02

Did she eat well ? I forgot how old she is, too.

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 16:02

She is 7.

She has never eaten as much as the boys but she ate fine.

OP posts:
PeterAndreForPM · 25/03/2011 16:05

Keep your eye on her x

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 16:09

I will be I am scared and I don't know what I am looking for.

Chest x-ray - clear.
Urine - fine.
Temperature - fine.
Chest - clear.

But she is in constant pain. If she is worse over the weekend I have to take her to OOH doctors and then ring normal doctors next week if no change.

OP posts:
PeterAndreForPM · 25/03/2011 16:13

can she be exact where the pain is ? (difficult for a 7yo I know)

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 16:16

She is saying her right side/round to her back.

OP posts:
PeterAndreForPM · 25/03/2011 16:22

sorry, I really have to go out now

has she been coughing a lot ?, it could be a rib muscle strain or inflammaion of he rib cartilages

they can be very, very painful

I had one last year and it lasted ages

I felt all right in myself but it was sore when I laid on it, coughed or took a deep breath

anti-inflammatories should help

gotta go xx

good luck

FourFortyFour · 25/03/2011 16:27

She has started coughing yesterday so the pain was from before that. I am supposed to be getting ready to go out myself but the kids are having a lolly so have to wait.

Thanks.

FFF has anyone suggested a blood test at all? It would just seem like the logical next step in trying to get to the bottom of it.

Did you ask the GP what he/she thought it could be?

Its good that she still seems fine in herself, she obviously isn't presenting so badly to the doctors that they feel there's reason panic.

PeterAndre, I wondered about that early on as I had a similar thing myself last Christmas, but it doesn't seem to fit.

When she says its her right side to her back, where abouts on the right side is she indicating? Is it above, below or on the ribs?

Right side pain spreading to the back in an adult would suggest gallbladder or liver once mechanical causes have been ruled out, but both those are extremely unlikely in a child.

The only other thing I was thinking was whether its actually digestive. If the pain is lower than the ribs, could it be her intestines. IBS maybe? Do you know whether she's had any diarrhoea or constipation recently?

Is it worth trying an osteopath?

I am back. She has just performed in a ballet. She was fabulous Grin.

No blood tests.

It is half way down the side and is always there.

I will be ringing the GP first thing on Monday if there is no change. She is very tired now and her feet are hurting but that could be the ballet.

Thanks everyone.

Has anyone any idea what it might be?

The GP implied it might be one of those things we never know but he will do further investigations if it doesn't go.

Hi sorry that you still have no answers to your dd's pain. Has the pain eased any with the nurofen? Is her pain above or below the ribs?
I would keep taking her back to drs until you are happy. it may be that it is a viral infection that is causing her muscular pain. But if you ar still concerned bring her back to gp.
I hope that by taking the nurofen regularly that your dd gets some good pain relief from it.

FourFortyFour · 26/03/2011 07:59

She is up and says the pain is the same. I need to ask her if the medicine helped.

She said the medicine helped a bit.

She said it hurts more when she holds her breath.

No but I know when I had a similar pain I worried I had it.

I am going to talk to DH now.

Thank you.

He wants to see how she is today?

If her chest was cleat could it still be pleurisy?
