Hard Lump under Chin

Went to the doctors today- noticed a lump on my nearly 3 DS just underneath his chin/jawline a few days ago.

Initial thought of my DP were hes been biten- tried to squeeze it but nothing. Not itchy although hes says "get off me mummy" when I touch it.

Anyway today went to the doctors- she examines him for a long time and is baffled, says its a hard lump and definately not a bite. She gave him antiboitics in case there is any infection. We are returning on Tuesday.

Im worried- anyone else experienced this?

Hes not been ill or off colour.

I had one a few years ago, which worried me-a hard lump under the skin of my jaw, which moved around a bit when pressed.

After being referred for a scan it turned out to be a lymph node which had apparently done it's job of fighting infection-this can make them go hard-this was a while ago and I'm rubbish at explaining medical things, so apologies

hi my ds had a hard lump under his chin, referred after long fight with gp to hosp to discover it was a thyroglossal(sorry not sure on spelling!) cyst. just out of interest is he suffering from a temperature? my ds had terrible spiking temperatures but usually just in the evenings and through the night. He needed a small op but made very quick recovery and very small and neat scare.

He sweatsbuckets at night- Has done for at least a year. We have a hot house and he has a duvet (which he doesnt kick off so think hes not that bothered by it}

My DS has one of these in his neck...he's had it for well over a year..the GP referred us to a paediatrician who said it is an enlarged lymph node..they did do blood tests which came back ok and tbh they don't seem overly concerned because he is healthy in every other respect

How big is the lump? DS's is about the size of a malteser

GP now says she thinks its a cyst and to wait another 2 weeks and see what happens. Its about the size of a peanut according to DP...

I have this and have had one for about 30 years! It is apparently a cyst left over from an infection and tonsillectomy at the age of 11.

I was supposed to have it removed when I had my wisdom teeth out but they decided to leave it.

It is the size of a pea and sits under the jaw line.

Don't worry they are harmless.

No checks done other than an x ray at the dentists and the fact that I had had it for years.

Got to go for a scan. Possible hemangioma tumour or a cyst.

I've got two, although they are just above my jawline. Cysts apparently. Had them for ages.

Hemagioma tumour? Does he have a mark there? I googled h.tumoure and they are benign.

The odd thing is it started off as a lump under normal colour skin and it reduced the skin started to pucker and now it's a red colour which blatches on pressure.

Also does anyone have experience if ultrasounds and what they do if it's a cyst

I think if it's a simple cyst you have the option of not doing anything (unless it will get bigger) or draining the cyst. Possibly removing as well any cyst tissue- but it wouldn't be a complicated procedure.

Ultrasound- well, they'll just place the thingy on the area they need to check- obviously totally painless and shouldn't take longer than a few minutes.

When's the scan scheduled for?

My DD had an ultrasound on her neck recently because of recurring enlarged lymph nodes. She had an infected one several years ago (at 3) and had a barrage of tests then (but no ultrasound) in case there was anything sinister going on, but all were clear.

She had another very enlarged one earlier this year, was referred back to the ENT consultant to be on the safe side, and had an ultrasound a few weeks ago, which again revealed no problems. It's settled down now.

The original infected lymph node was quite red and angry looking. It didn't respond to antibiotics and eventually sort of collapsed, leaving a scar, unfortunately.

It originally followed a sore throat, when her glands were all quite swollen for a while; this one never went down, then turned red. She saw several doctors; the ENT surgeon wanted to remove the lymph node; another doctor disagreed and eventually it was left.

So we've had a fair bit of lymph node activity, but no significant illness. The infection was thought to be an atypical mycobacterium, which is related to but different from TB.

I hope your DS's tests go well, but don't panic, there are lots of not serious things that it could be.

hemangioma tends to be red and on the skin a bit like raised red wine birth marks. nothing to wory about and go as child grows.

No idea when scan will be. Taken 3mths to see an ENT consultant.

It has gone down a bit and which has caused skin to pucker around it and go red. It's just to the right of his windpipe.

Ultrasound doesn't sound too difficult. He's normally very helpful.

Doesn't help when GPs and consultants both look baffled!

i would hope if they where very worried then scans and appointments would be very swift. cysts and hemagoima look very similar.

That does sound like an infection (to a completely unqualified person). The paediatrician we first saw did ask whether she was having night sweats (she wasn't). Have you mentioned it to the doctor?

Sorry, forgot to say, ultrasound completely painless, though possible faintly tickly. DD is 10 now. When she had all the other tests at 3, she took them all in a quite interested and faintly amused spirit, and everyone was very nice to her.

I agree that a long wait can be a good sign. DD had a very swift call back after a chest x-ray (turned out to be a shadow caused by a suppressed giggle). Frightened the life out of me.

It is a worry, but though 3 consultants all seemed a bit mystified at one point (she was referred to a chest specialist after the x-ray), the thoroughness and care were very reassuring.
