Which bedtime stories did you read this evening?

We had rather poor choices.

Mr Large in Charge - a spin off from a tv show in UK I think? Very stereotyped nonsense about Mr Large being 'amusingly' unable to cope with the children and the housework when his wife is ill in bed for the day. My 4yo thought it was hillarious.

And we had Commotion in the Ocean, which is very popular I know, but I think the rhymes are all a bit contrived. My 2yo loved it.

Did you fare any better?

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 07/07/2010 20:13

Alfie the warewolf - was rather good in that ds realised by looking at the book while I read that he can read it by himself. He's in bed now reading for the first time ever - he's 7 btw and not into books, so I'm hoping this could be the start.

undercovamutha · 07/07/2010 20:13

Mr Noisy - with all the loud noises and shouting - the neighbours must love us!

Tamashii · 07/07/2010 20:14

We had my favourite just now "Chopsticks" by Jon Berkeley.

It has to be kept on top shelf in the cupboard so DS can't locate it or it would be torn to shreds!!!

I love the way the pictures are painted. Gorgeous book.

ReasonableDoubt · 07/07/2010 20:15

A crappy 'Clifford the big red dog' story which my 5 yr old has loved since he was 2 yrs old and shows no signs of getting bored of

Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson

Then DS bored me regaled me with jokes from his joke book.

RuthieCohen · 07/07/2010 20:15

gruffalo here too. complete with a range of accents to make it more bearable. today gruff was a brummie and owl was from somewhere between west africa and wales

2plus2more · 07/07/2010 20:18

"One Fish, Two Fish" (Dr Seuss) to my 2.5 year old - AGAIN! - even she knows it almost by heart by now!
A further chapter of "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe" to my 5 year old.

domesticsluttery · 07/07/2010 20:18

DD had My Wobbly Tooth Must Not Ever Never Fall Out (Charlie and Lola) and Angelina's Christmas (Angelina Ballerina). Yes, I did try to explain that it was July...

DS2 read some of Bob and the Disappearing Moon (Adventures of Bob and Barry) to me.

DS1 grunted that he was too busy listening to the football on the radio...

Besom · 07/07/2010 20:19

We've got 'the Large Family collection' and dd (2) loves it because the pictures are good, but I tend to change some of the words because it's so old fashioned and sterotyped.

We had Handa's Surprise three times tonight.

grapeandlemon · 07/07/2010 20:20

Elephant Wellephant

I want my potty

I have read PEAS for a month now finding penelope and pete amid a pile of peas so I have hidden it....

artifarti · 07/07/2010 20:20

We had Emergency! which is a very strange one all about the need for various emergency vehicles. (e.g. 999 Emergency! There's a cat stuck up a tree!) They are mostly about snow ploughs or traffic jams but in the ambulance one there are lots of people looking in horror at something off the picture which always feels a bit wrong for a 22 mo! You have to sing it though and it's got helicopters in it so he demands it every night!

Then Toddle Waddle. Then Dear Zoo. Then the animal picture book with parental noises that we always finish on.

Sithmummy · 07/07/2010 20:21

We had The Princess and the Pea.

Then a very long discussion about how she couldn't be a real princess because a real princess wouldn't complain about not sleeping after the king and queen took her in and gave her dry clothes, and fed her etc etc. A real princess would have much better manners and hopefully a little bit more to say for herself other than, "I am a real princess."

Very pleased that DS2 knows what he wants in a princess.

Naetha · 07/07/2010 20:22

Tip Tip Dig Dig. It was the free bookstart book, and has since become a firm favourite. It's the only one he'll have.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/07/2010 20:25

Thomas and the sodding tank engine x 2 to DS (2)

Cinderella and then How the Grinch stole Christmas to DD (4)

ShadeofViolet · 07/07/2010 20:25

Brown Bear and then 'That rabbit belongs to Emily Brown'. We had 'I will not never, ever eat a tomato' for ages so these make a nice change!

mankyscotslass · 07/07/2010 20:27

DS2 "5 minutes peace" from the Large famiy.

DD a chapter of the "on the shores of silver lake" (we are working our way through the little house books.#

DS1 has chosen to forgoe a story in preference for watching the first half of the footy and the halt time talk. He is hit and miss whether he wants one now or not, he is 8.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 07/07/2010 20:27

Hungry Caterpillar. DS is 11mo though, and likes to quickly turn to the pages with the holes in them so he can stick his fingers in them. I think that my PFB is very intelligent in that he looks for the pages with the holes in them;)

I had to hide Peepo Baby.....Everytime he saw it he had a meltdown until I read it to him 7 times.

DS: Aggggggggggggghhhhh!!!! Uggggggggggghhh!!!! Mama!Ma MA! MAMAMAMAMAMA!
AGggggggggggggggHHHH!

Me: Who's behind my big blue car?

alana39 · 07/07/2010 20:28

A chapter of Beast Quest (book 406 or something, they just keep churning them out).

These were great when DS1 decided he wanted a load of adventure books to read by himself. They are considerably less great now that DS2 is insisting on having them read to him.

domesticsluttery I feel for you - I like Charlie & Lola on TV but find the books painful and the wobbly tooth one has only just "disappeared somewhere" after a month of obsessive reading.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 07/07/2010 20:28

Arf at the accents. I insist on reading Thomas books in a bad Liverpudlian accent, much to DP's disgust

germl · 07/07/2010 20:31

My DS (1.7)chose Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and an In The Night Garden book tonight. Usually we have The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Monkey Puzzle, I Love Korky (Christiano Sorrentino) and Clip-Clop (Nicola Smee) - bit longwinded but he loves it and I like him being still enough to snuggle into!

mrsjuan · 07/07/2010 20:32

'Oh Dear'. My 13 month old has finally figured out that it's not 'Dear Zoo' and has stopped having a meltdown when she'd pulled it from the bookshelf and can't find the camel .

We had to have it 3 times though so I fear it could become a new favourite. I still have 'no eggs here, oh dear' ringing in my ears an hour later.

taffetacatski · 07/07/2010 20:35

DS (6) got to watch the first half of Spain vs Germany so no book tonight. This week we are doing a bit of Mr Gum or the Wishing Chair.

DD (3) had me read the Dudgeon is Coming ( eponymous book.....) which we both adore and DS read her Footballer Fabio and a Numbers book. Vair sweet.

Wholelottalove · 07/07/2010 20:38

Whatever Next, Before I Go to Sleep and a very, very annoying book called 'Squeak Squeak' about Nellie looking for the source of a squeak which turns out to be...wait for it...her new squeaky shoes . DD always gives me when it comes to the punchline, but insists on the book anyway.

I have Tiger Who Came to Tea by heart now too. Actually, I don't mind that one.
