We just finished Henrietta's House by Elisabeth Goudge - lovely book, but aimed at a bit older than I had realised when I skimmed it in the shop DD seemed to enjoy it though, despite the rather old fashioned language. I kind of miss the old days of Kipper & the Gruffalo though .. .

theres no-one better than henrietta to dd 5yo...a bit bizarre but she loves it and its not bl**dy Thomas

StrikeUpTheBand · 15/09/2009 23:00

DS is 2.6. We read "Mog's Bad Thing", "Can't you sleep little Bear?" and "Pants!"

He has varied taste don't you think?

piprabbit · 16/09/2009 00:36

MLindt, the Magical Garden of Claude Monet is about a little girl who travels from Paris, meets Monet and explores the garden with her dog Louey.
You might be able to look inside at Amazon
here

Fennel · 16/09/2009 00:44

We didn't read tonight, but when we do get round to it we are reading The Hobbit. It's great. I hadn't read it for about 25 years.

I don't miss Kipper and the Gruffalo at all as the dc get a bit older.

thirtypence · 16/09/2009 00:46

I've just read the London Eye Mystery to see if it was suitable for ds to read (verdict yes - because we don't have any derelict buildings for him to become terrified of) and actually I really enjoyed it. Not as much as Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, but I guess it's aimed at a younger age and despite having all the clues in the book I didn't solve it before the character in the book did.

Incidentally if ds goes through a bed wetting patch I describe it as the Urinous Incident of the Bob in the Nightime. Which I am quite proud of.

My Naughty Little Sister to DD3
Flambards to DD1.
DH read to DD2 - the last chapter of When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, I think.

nooka · 16/09/2009 02:34

We are on a new cycle at the moment where we all take tunrs to read to each other. So:

DD (9) is reading You're a bad man Mr Gum
DS (10) is reading The Nine Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones
DH has just finished reading Stig of the Dump
I am reading Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper

The children are reading Mrs Pepperpot (ds) and the Adventures of Tom Trueheart (dd) for their quiet reading time.

hellish · 16/09/2009 02:55

I didn't read any tonight.

DD2(7) read some Mary Kate and Ashley chapter book that she insisted on buying at a second hand book sale.
DD1 Read "Made you Look" by Diane Roberts.
Mdme Lindt - I know your pain, DD2 has French reading books too.

SomeGuy · 16/09/2009 03:22

I read something about Dustbin the dog for my son who is 7, and Charlie and Lola - Too Small for School for daughter, 2.

Unfortunately there are only 3 proper Charlie and Lola books, so we read them on rotation.....

cory · 16/09/2009 17:00

I'm reading Jules Verne, 20000 leagues under the sea, to ds (9)- and dd (nearly 13) quite often turns up outside his door to listen too

piprabbit · 16/09/2009 21:57

Having been flamed yesterday for reading a lovely book about Monet to DD (aged 5), I thought we'd go for something more socially acceptable tonight. Perhaps 'Bratz: Will work for Fashion'.

Any other suggestions?

TabithaTwitchet · 16/09/2009 22:13

There's a dragon on the doorstep
and Working, by Helen Oxenbury.

(Can't wait for DD to be able to read Jennings, I have them all, loved them as a child. She is only 20 months though, so there are a few more years to wait)

VintageGardenia · 17/09/2009 07:58

Well you could revise them yourself till she's old enough!

Last night we were reading The Bag of Bones by Vivian French, don't know what the age guide is but DS at 11 is enjoying it.

I'm glad he still likes being read to. Not sure how much longer it will last but it's something we still both look forward to at the end of each day.

VintageGardenia · 17/09/2009 08:00

30p - the London Eye Mystery was a great hit here.

Takver · 17/09/2009 08:55

I still like being read to VintageGardenia, and I'm 40 next birthday so you may be ok for a while yet

His wife will love that, won't she, when I pop round of an evening and tuck him in and lie on the bed and stroke his hair and read Jennings to him? She'll be constantly on at him to let me come over for Christmas, etc.

Poledra · 17/09/2009 09:13

I didn't read to DDs 2 and 3, but, as instructed, told the story of the Three Bears and woe betide me if I change any of the words - 3.5yo DD2 knows what she likes and has no compunction about letting me when I get it wrong (DD3 doesn't have an articulate opinion - only 13 months!).

Bloody Rainbow fairy shite book to 5-yo DD1, though I'm deperate to get the Magic Faraway Tree, as one of her friends is having a Faraway Tree birthday party, and I think DD1 will appreciate it more if she's read the book first (friend's mother does the most fantastic themed parties ).

Takver · 17/09/2009 09:27

Fantastic picture I have to say the last thing DH read to me was a book about breeding brassicas, not as romantic as it could be . . .

An old thread but a fascinating one. DS1 age 2.5 is obsessed with the Blue Kangaroo books at the moment, fortunately they're better than many books for repeated reading. DS2 enjoys being read stories with or without his brother but doesn't have so much regular reading at bedtime at the moment as I normally just lie and feed him to sleep.

evansmummy · 05/01/2010 21:10

Knuffle Bunny. Again. (DS is 5)

sunburntats · 05/01/2010 21:15

Topsy and bastard Tim have itchy fucking heads.....again.
I have developed an irrational HATE for Topay and Tim....ds on the other hand has a love of them. ffs.

Oh and bedtime bear.
He would have me reading 100 books a night to him if it were up to him i LOVE it that he loves books

Meglet · 05/01/2010 21:19

DD had 'Piglet' (from a MN secret santa pressie ) and she giggled all the way through it.

DS had Harry and the Dinosaurs, Romp in the Swamp. The original book illustrations are adorable, I've seen more recent ones and the pictures aren't as good.
