We just finished Henrietta's House by Elisabeth Goudge - lovely book, but aimed at a bit older than I had realised when I skimmed it in the shop DD seemed to enjoy it though, despite the rather old fashioned language. I kind of miss the old days of Kipper & the Gruffalo though .. .

aw moonshine Gobbolino the witches cat, my all time fav kids book!

frasersmummy · 15/09/2009 21:45

dora the explorer at the carnival and Thomas and the red balloon

DS is 4.5 so Iam thinking of trying to introduce chapter books like the secret 7 or the faraway tree ..

but that might meet with resistance

MmeLindt · 15/09/2009 21:46

Is the Magical Garden the one with the little girl who goes to Paris to see Monet's paintings?

princessmel · 15/09/2009 21:48

Heidi

The Usbourne version.

They said, 'mummy we picked one of your favourite stories' awww!

Yesterday was a chapter from The Folk of The Faraway Tree.

bigchris · 15/09/2009 21:48

isittooearlyforgin - did u get you choose from bookstart? dcs love that book!

chosenone · 15/09/2009 21:49

Aliens in Underpants save the world! love that series. DS 4 DD 2

weegiemum · 15/09/2009 21:50

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, chapter 24.

Man, JK Rowling is hard to read aloud! I wish her characters would stop interrupting each other!

Luckily, tonight had no house elves in it. Those squeaky voices are hard on the throat!

I am only reading it as I think they would find the film too scary without know ing the story first, and they are desperate to see the film!

(kids are 5 (fell asleep again), 7 and 9)

OnlyWantsOneDoesntLikeDM · 15/09/2009 21:51

Just me and you, the one about the geese looking for some where to hide from the storm.

Oh and the hungry catapillar, or aliens love underpants, not very high brow dd loves them tho and knows the stories

VintageGardenia · 15/09/2009 21:51

Jennings & Darbishire!

The language is hilarious.

pluto · 15/09/2009 21:51

Stig of the Dump to 9yo DS1.

That's not my Bunny to 7 month old DS2!

Meglet · 15/09/2009 21:52

For 2.10 DS and 1yo DD we had:

We are wearing out the naughty step
Mr Brown can Moo - Dr Suess.

I used to love Magic faraway tree, I need to get a new copy for the dc's in a couple of years.

TaylorSwift · 15/09/2009 21:52

Mr Men books

weegiemum · 15/09/2009 21:53

Our first chapter books (which were met with universal approval!!) were THe Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark, Fantastic Mr Fox, and Littlenose The Hunter.

When kids were 4-5.

Takver · 15/09/2009 21:53

I love Jennings! DD liked Jennings' Little Hut - hoping to find more to borrow at MiLs next time we visit as they knew Anthony Buckeridge & have loads of the books

One of the "Charlie" books by Hilary McKay - can recommend them to anyone looking for a change from Horrid Henry...

VintageGardenia · 15/09/2009 21:55

Wow that's a nice connection, or rather: what a supersonic wheeze, why not beetle over to the MIL's and borrow a few?

bibbitybobbityhat · 15/09/2009 21:58

Please all do yourselves a favour and order all the Poppleton books you can muster. They are by Cynthia Rylant. They are a joy to read aloud; nice short funny touching stories. And easy enough for young readers to start to read to themselves by about Yr1/Yr2.

I didn't read any stories tonight as we came home late from dinner out for ds's 6th birthday .

PlumBumMum · 15/09/2009 21:59

I'm quite sad reading that, I read to my dcs all the time

But I can't remember my mum reading to me, even though she always read, and I always read,
My mum bought dd1 The magic faraway tree last year and we both enjoyed it, but it was the first I had ever heard of it,
she got another one out of the library last week much older version, she didn't like the names were changed slightly

(admittedly I always had my head stuck in Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High, The worst witch when younger)

Rosesinautumn · 15/09/2009 22:04

Charlie and Lola - the school one.
The Emperor of Absurdia
Happy Birthday Thomas - Blurgh!

StrumpetMajor · 15/09/2009 22:06

DD who is 5 - Little Red Riding Hood
DS who is 2 - Owl babies

I used to read my DD the faraway tree when she was really little. She didn't understand it but would sit in her cot going "wisha, wisha, wisha", (the noise the trees made when talking). I think I will have to dig it out again as she might really like it now.

lottiejenkins · 15/09/2009 22:09

I love Owl Babies!!! My friends son is called Percy so i bought it for his birthday a few years ago!!

StrumpetMajor · 15/09/2009 22:14

My DS LOVES owl babies.

He always finishes the bit after Sarah and Percy and says to me "I want my mummy says Bill".

Ahhhh - might have to go and give him a kiss whilst he's asleep now.

maggiethecat · 15/09/2009 22:16

Eric the liontamer for dd - (almost 3) and Tove Jansson's Comet in Moominland for dd (6)- a welcome break from the Rainbow Magic series! We stumbled upon the Moomin book in the library and dds were keen after recent visit to Finland. Tove is a wonderful writer - I can better appreciate moominmania after reading her.

francagoestohollywood · 15/09/2009 22:16
