Chalet School - plot inconsistency bothering me

I don't know why I suddenly thought of this but perhaps my first 3 consecutive glasses of postnatal wine have brought out my inner dullness.

There is a Chalet School book (Exploits?) where some of the girls bake apple pies and mistakenly use cloves of garlic instead of cloves.

Not believable and silly.

Remember the Lintons who were a little bit lower class and wore lipstick? Therefore = cheap.

Methinks I may have to track down that missing book - could be dds' inheritance

constancereader · 27/10/2008 20:38

Wasn't there a make-up wearing girl called Joan?

Habbibu · 27/10/2008 20:39

Just looked on ebay - how many books are there? "Gay from China at the Chalet School" is a new one on me.

VintageGardenia · 27/10/2008 20:39

Joyce Linton is the one I remember.

AIBU to be disappointed that the only careers my daughter can think of are 1. holy orders or 2. teach at her old school? Can anyone link to a doctor for her to marry instead? TIA.

I remember Joyce too, she was mean to one of the teachers.

Icanseethesea · 27/10/2008 20:42

Ruby you are kidding! That's got to be a first edition or something, has't it??!!

anyone remember Thekla Von Stift, one of the few explusions? She was tangled up with Joyce Linton wasn't she?

VintageGardenia · 27/10/2008 20:45

Joyce was cheeky and conceited until Jo gave her a talking to, then she was transformed into a true Chalet Girl and wiped off all her lipstick.

The one I want is only £12.

Antonia Forest books are terribly expensive too.

Habbibu · 27/10/2008 20:45

which one do you want, constance? There are loads on ebay.

Yes Thekla was Prussian I think, and they thought she was odd for eating cured ham of some kind and snooty about her bloodline or some such.

Oh dear I know them too well. Well, the earlier ones anyway.

constancereader · 27/10/2008 20:47

Yes I do remember Thekla.
She was a nasty piece of work, wasn't she? Didn't mild mannered (but beautiful) Marie shake her once?

Fennel · 27/10/2008 20:49

I still have about 30 chalet school books . as well as Malory Towers and St Clares and a few Antonia Forest and Angela Brazils and Trebizons.

The chalet school books got worse and worse, towards the end. Some of the later ones are utter drivel.

constancereader · 27/10/2008 20:49

I want most of the AF ones, they are just the best books ever imo. I never thought of Ebay, . There is one I have never read that I particularly want, the one where they go to live in Trennels.

Fennel · 27/10/2008 20:55

Is that Falconer's Lure?

Yes the AFs are so much better than the rest, unfortunately I have lots of all the others and not many AFs.

VintageGardenia · 27/10/2008 20:56

The Chalet books were great fun but looking back, yes, there was a lot of drivelling involved. The Marlow books were superb, though, a completely different kettle of fish - really good and complex characters, very well written, very real.

Have never read any Antonia Forrester. And even though I have them all, I agree with Fennel, the CS books get very same-y towards the end.

VintageGardenia · 27/10/2008 20:58

I think most of the AF ones are out of print, except the school ones.

I read the Player's Boy recently, really good, and I've always been on the lookout for the Ready Made Family, the one which explains how Kay hooks up with Edwin. In the school ones, always so much has happened in the intervals, most appetite-whetting.

Autumn Term is in print and easy to get hold of - it is a brilliant book.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 27/10/2008 22:00

The make up wearing Joan was in a Problem for the Chalet school She was a 'common' girl who was sent to the chalet school when her Dad won big on the football pools. She was a nasty piece of work at first, but the Chalet school sorted her out! There was another girl from the same town called Rosamund who was also working class but very well-mannered and she fitted in right away. The message of that particular book was that it was OK to be working class as long as you weren't vulgar with it.

TotalChaos · 28/10/2008 09:37

Did she get expelled, or did she run off with GASP -a man?
