Halloween story time suggestions for 5 year olds

I’m doing a story time session for a group of 5 year old boys.
They’ve outgrown Room on the broom and Meg and Mog and are quite into ghosts and monsters so I’m looking for something a little bit spooky, funny or exciting (but not actually scary). Any Halloween favourites?

Christopher Pumpkin by Sue Hendra always goes down well with my Reception class.

Winnie the Witch is a classic, although not remotely 'scary'. The original story is my favourite.

The Aliens Love Underpants series has a Monsters Love Underpants edition which is quite good.

Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter also released a Halloween version of The Dinosaur that Pooped series last year.

Funny Bones

DisforDarkChocolate · 21/09/2023 06:38

I second Funny Bones. Even thinking about it makes me laugh. I have a granddaughter that needs a copy.

LeeMiller · 21/09/2023 06:39

Thanks! We have funny bones but I’ll look at the other funny bones titles.

Thanks for the ideas, Sue Hendra is always good.

anything atmospheric and a little spooky rather than funny?

I'd agree with funny bones but I'd disagree strongly that 5 year olds have outgrown room on the broom.

LeeMiller · 21/09/2023 08:34

Yes, rather than outgrown I think it would be more accurate to say they’re a bit bored of Room and the Broom, same with the Gruffalo. They are old favourites but we’ve read them so many times and they’ve been read repeatedly at nursery too so now they’re more comfort reads. I’m looking for something new.

A Dark Dark Tale by Ruth Brown scary all the way through but a not at the end
The Hairy Toe by Daniel Postgate, I think it's quite scary at the end but guess it depends on your child
Haunted House by Jan Pienkowski

DD loved this at that age.

I'm coming to get you by Tony Ross is another one which is is scary right til the end!

(But about an alien rather than a traditional Halloween monster)

LeeMiller · 22/09/2023 18:30

I thought Winnie the Witch might be a bit long, I might be misremembering it though.

I don’t know the others so thanks for the suggestions.
