Some Fretwork and the Interminable Christmas Play at the Chalet School

Now girls, line up and listen because this term is a busy one. Firstly we are combining our hobbies club and the Christmas play, so we will need our fretworkers to get busy on the scenery, some beautiful découpage for decorations, our nimble-fingered needlewomen on costume duty and some scrapbooks for - er...
Now one other thing girls. As you know the Chalet School has moved from the Tyrol, to Guernsey, to Armishire, to some island or other and thence to Switzerland.
This term we have moved again and the first thing I want you to do is to find out where the bloody hell we are....

I'm a new girl. I think I'm in Samphire. I'm an orphan so it was decided to send me away to school. I have very nimble fingers so I will be great at embroidering our clothes. I can also argue from cause to effect - for instance if I have another fermented milk I will have a headache tomorrow. Can someone show me where the splashery is? Also could someone send me details of the shared drive please?

I get EBD was doing it for laughs, but all I can think of when reading THAT scene in Lintons is, "How the actual fuck do you get garlic cloves mixed up with clove cloves? And how did anyone not smell it?"

Do you mean Leader at the Chalet School? Because I have an Armada copy which is most definitely paperback!

"A Leader" was the original title when it was published in 1961. Armada mangled a lot of the titles and split books in two. Chalet School Fete is a good example. That never existed in hardback as it is the second half of "A Genius at the Chalet School". They also abridged them and in some cases cut out whole chapters. So for some of the titles the Armada version is only giving you a shadow of the original story. The best way is to read the hardbacks but these can some cost unbelievable amounts of money for the rarer titles.

Girls Gone By republish the original unabridged text from the hardback, include the original illustrations and a publishing history. But in the 19 or so years since they started doing this they've never done A Leader. So huge excitement. Absolutely recommend you read this to get the full story as EBD originally wrote it.

Apologies if I didn't make it clear that I was referring to GGBP editions when I said "first ever paperback edition". Armadas are great starter books to get kids going and if you can't get the story any other way but that's about all they're good for. Please don't pay huge amounts of money for them.

I got Leader. Jack is such a pain in the arse. Mary-Lou would have told her to stop being a stalker.

Does It Again is up next. Btw if you want GGBP editions which aren’t ridiculously expensive and are out of print, Topsy Turvy Books are a good one to contact - Betula, one of the women who runs it, has loads of CS books. She’s sold me a couple.

Has the interminable Christmas play been cancelled this year due to COVID?

@ElinoristhenewEnid the play is going to be done in a socially-distanced way and outdoors. Bring your own plumeaux. Suggestions for location? Lakeside? Beside Rufus's kennel? Garden of the Kron Prinz Karl? In the pine forest? Armiford Station car park?

Has the term started yet? I'm a new girl ( a problematic new girl, naturally) who's hoping Joey (or Mary-Lou/Len/anyone else who cares) will take me under their wing and dramatically transform me into a true Chaletian. Although can it please not include falling through ice, off a cliff or getting kidnapped cos I'm a bit of a wuss?! Thanks in advance!
