Had some BRILLIANT suggestions for ds, got them all, and he loved them all.

Now it's her turn.

Works by Nancy Mitford and Georgette Heyer?

Some of the Golden Age murders?

The Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys) followed immediately by Jane Eyre?

Vanity Fair by Thackeray?

Changing Places and Small World by David Lodge?

And of course everything you got for DS, unless it doesn't match her interests at all.

Any clues about what she likes?

In the meantime, Anne McCaffrey, terry pratchett, rick Riordan, Phillip Pullman, Neil Gaiman?

Thank you for ideas, she wouldn't read the "adult" stuff yet (although she has read 2 Jane Austen), that's why it's so hard...

DS' taste is wildly different.

And hse wants things written now, not my stuff that I htink she'd like..(although I know she would)

The problem with the earlier Adrian Mole stuff is that your DD won't get the cultural context of a lot of the jokes without an encyclopaedia telling her about the people / places from the 80's. It reads like a period piece IMO.

However for a genuine period piece what about I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith? She wrote 101 Dalmations too, but don't let the Disney version put you off. Sometimes older pieces are easier to get, unlike more recent history.

Malorie Blackman, 'Noughts and Crosses' series.

Has she read the 'Uglies' series? I've not read it myself but seen it mentioned on here - sounds a bit like a modern version of that 70s film/book where you get zapped at a certain age.

She's read all th eAdrian Mole and the Uglies and all the dystopian novels that were all the rage last year! Bumped etc.

Not keen on Malorie Blackman (don't know why - will suggest she tries again)

She's read all the Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the prairie etc

She wouldn't like Rebecca etc yet - she is intellectually mature but not emotionally, she's got no patience with psychological stuff - part of the problem!

What about classic SF like Isaac Asimov or Ray Bradbury short stories?

Short stories are a good way of introducing your DD to literary fiction, as they are normally easy to digest in one sitting, there should be anthologies of short stories at your local library too.

Do you think she'd be frightened by M R James ghost stories?

DD(14) loves the Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, I am number..., Time Riders.
Harlan Cobin did a young teen book, Shelter, its out in paperback now and the follow up is coming out soon. I read it too and it's realy good. She's now reading his'adult' books. John Grisham has did a couple of teen ones too, Theodore Bone or something like that. DD is in the shower I'll ask her when she appears.
