Just wondering if anyone else thinks that we are at a stage where we should incentivise/reward people who choose not to breed. We're on a finitely resourced planet and I've just read a thread where people were talking about some celebrity having a 4th kid via a surrogate.
Should we talk about how the more kids you have, the more competition you are making for them in adult life?

AI is already being used to take over previously human staffed jobs. It's been creeping into jobs like journalism for ages.
There have been famines in various countries for ever and yet we are at a point in evolution where we have more power over our fertility than ever.
Interested in what other people think about this.

I was born to abusive and negligent parents, too. I tried to take my own life a handful of times in my late teens/early twenties. I was a mess. I was and still am flat-chested, have gynaecological issues down there that make sex very painful/impossible, I've never once felt like a woman.

During a massive row with my mum years ago, she said to my face that she'd have smothered me at birth if she didn't want me. On some days I wish she'd have done just that. But guess what? I'm married to a wonderful man and have a nice house, car and two adorable cats. Unfortunately kids aren't in the picture yet although we are going to keep trying to change that so long as I have periods.

I honestly think the OP is a highly-depressed individual who sees nothing but gloom and doom. Suicides are on the up and plenty of homicides, combine that with ongoing worldwide fertility struggles, humans are on course to extinction a lot faster than if people just decide to not procreate.

I didn't get that from the OP at all.

8bn and counting people on this planet would demonstrate otherwise.

You have a very skewed view of the world.

The human race is more likely to become extinct due to nuclear war or a catastrophic asteroid than due to suicides, murders, and a small percentage of women chosing not to have children...

BadNomad · 04/07/2023 22:21

If we want to "save the planet" then surely quality over quantity of children should matter. We want people who will contribute more than they will take. But we can't do that because we are not Hitler. Therefore, just leave it alone. If people's personal choices lead to the human race dying out sooner, then so be it. That is the natural order of things. It is going to happen eventually anyway. I am content knowing I won't be continuing a line of people who will face those end days.

WildFlowerBees · 09/07/2023 16:37

I'm glad the population is in decline given our current grade of human.

SarahShorty · 09/07/2023 17:27

@WildFlowerBees I'm in semi-agreement given how long I've been struggling to conceive. Makes me feel a bit better about it. I don't want my kids mingling with the detritus walking about these days.

sunglassesonthetable · 09/07/2023 20:23

You're not coming over very well.

Currently grade of human*

What sort of grade are you?

IIRC that poster flounced off a week or so ago. Not sure how she's going to prevent her children encountering 'detritus,' either.

Lovely way to talk about other people's kids eh
