Discuss everything related to paid childcare here, including childminders, nannies, nurseries and au pairs.

Am I missing something here - what are the children whom you are meant to be minding doing while you are on the Internet??

Because I would be livid if I was paying you to mind my child and you were Mumsnetting.

Whip that GP.

Gotta go, but FiveC, if this isn't a wind-up, you really need to get some tablets...big time.

beanieb · 12/11/2008 19:51

Oh the HORROR!

fivecandles · 12/11/2008 19:52

Really, the fact that this is being trivialised as an issue and my concerns rubbished puts me off even more. If a parent came to you and said they were concerned that you weren't giving their child your full attention because you were actually on the interenet while taking their money would you take the same approach?

'You appear to be very keen on seeing people disciplined. '

Not at all. I just recognize that in most jobs there are disciplinary procedures for people who lack the profesionalism to know what constitutes acceptable behaviour in the workplace.

If my kids' teachers surfed the net whilst they were supervising their students I would expect them to be disciplined as would I.

Don't make out that this is MY problem.

I would be concerned if a childminder was surfing the net whilst being paid to look after my kids. I'm not the only one. In fact, if most parents had any idea this was going on I'm sure they'd be as outraged as I am.

Is it funny then that childminders are surfing the net whilst being paid to look after other people's kids? Is that what it is?

Tempted to go to the press. Honestly I'm horrified.

fivecandles, I think you're determined to wind yourself into a foam of moral outrage.

Sometimes young children sleep during the day.
Sometimes they play happily for a short while without adult interaction.
Sometimes there are no children there at all!

To state that MNing childminders are being abusive, unprofessional or somehow devious by being on here during the day is offensive.

So, unless you've been keeping a spreadsheet for each MNer that you know is a childminder, and have timed each one of them, and can prove that they spend an huge amount of time on here, whilst their charges play with open fires, bottles of bleach and pointy objects of all shapes and sizes, I think your argument is pretty weak - and quite silly.

Never mind the press, go to the rack.

hullygully · 12/11/2008 19:56

On second thoughts, go to the Daily Mail, they will LOVE you and you will be with your own kind.

What I want to know is where are fivecandles children right now, while she's here on Mumsnet. Because, obviously, you are suppose to literally watch your children (or the children you are minding) 24/7/365.

So why isn't she doing that?

dustystar · 12/11/2008 19:56

It can be their new campaign

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 12/11/2008 19:57

You sound quite insane.

fivecandles · 12/11/2008 19:57

Just think that parents whose kids are with childminders have a right to know that it is considered acceptable amongst some childminders to surf the net while taking their money to look after their kids. And some people when challenged about this not only justify it but find it hillarious.

OP posts:
fivecandles · 12/11/2008 19:58

It's insane to expect childminders (along with teachers) to give their full attention to the children they mind and not be surfing the net is it?

"You appear to be very keen on seeing people disciplined."

My comment was supposed to be a joke; I was going to link to an S&M site, but didn't want to google one whilst my children are still in the room.

Lauriefairycake · 12/11/2008 19:58

I wouldn't be outraged

constant stimulation/helicoptering for children is unnecessary

it is actually possible to be vaguely alert in their vicinity and for them to be totally feckin' fine

or parents, never mind child minders would go insane

I use a childminder. Sometimes she goes to the toilet. I think I want my money back

You are sounding quite quite insane. Full moon.

georgimama · 12/11/2008 19:59

fivecandles, please answer Tee. Presumably your children are in bed? Why are you on MN? Why aren't you looking after them, now that you are "in parentis". And please define looking after and how one does this with a sleeping child.

silverfrog · 12/11/2008 20:00

It is insane to keep on foaming at the mouth over something you do not even know is happening, whilst ignoring questions being asked, like:

what do you expect childminders to do while their mindees are sleeping?
