Am I missing something here - what are the children whom you are meant to be minding doing while you are on the Internet??

Because I would be livid if I was paying you to mind my child and you were Mumsnetting.

How would you feel if your kids' teachers were Mumsnetting whilst being paid to teach your kids? They're in loco parentis and have a responsibility to supervise despite the fact that at best it's unprofessional and shoddy. When you're being paid to do a job you should do that job whatever it is. If you find it boring perhaps you should get another but you shouldn't be taking someone's money in order to sit around Mumsnetting any more than I should be as a teacher or even would expect a shop assistant to or anyone else AT WORK.

I thought childminders were self-employed?
They can't be "sacked" afaik.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 12/11/2008 19:27

fivecandles - you haven't answered my question - what do you expect a childminder to do while their mindees are sleeping????

mumsanutter · 12/11/2008 19:27

When I am working I don't usually use the internet, when I am off then I enjoy surfing!! I find this site very helpful, and if I have a problem during my work day then I quickly ask for help whilst watching the children all the time. My dc call me hawkeyes - usually because they ca't get away with anything!!

Although I like HumphreySuchion's idea, can I get one for me to go into and leave the children to wreak the house!!

Bubble99 · 12/11/2008 19:27

fivecandles. Children asleep at a nursery are not counted in ratios. Most nurseries use this time for staff to take breaks. At our nursery they are checked every 15 minutes and a sleep chart is signed. I wouldn't have a problem with a CM using the internet if her charges were asleep, TBH.

That said, I would have a problem if the children were regularly stuck in front of a TV while a CM was mnetting, but if asleep (and regularly checked) no problem.

flowerybeanbag · 12/11/2008 19:27

fivecandles go on the thread/s that has made you cross about this and say these things to the people who are posting on there while minding.

hullygully · 12/11/2008 19:27

Yeah, but work's really boring, innit.

fivecandles · 12/11/2008 19:28

Sorry, but there is no way that I would use a childminder if I thought she was going to be on the Internet instead of looking after my kids (which I was paying and trusting her to do). I'm really quite shocked to see it and see people justifying it.

OP posts:
Bubble99 · 12/11/2008 19:29

But if they are asleep and regularly checked, what's the problem?

AstroPup · 12/11/2008 19:29

So what do you think of parents on MN while with their kids?
Adnd PLEASE explain the 'not even while they're sleeping' thing to me.

fivecandles · 12/11/2008 19:29

'what do you expect a childminder to do while their mindees are sleeping???? '

Mind my kids?? Isn't that what you're being paid to do?? If you're on Mumsnet, sorry but you're not really giving your full attention to the job are you?

I'd be absolutely bloody livid.

'fivecandles go on the thread/s that has made you cross about this and say these things to the people who are posting on there while minding.'

That'll be this one then!!

There are people here who are childminders who are justifying the fact that they Mumsnet while childminding. I think that's shoking.

Five candles, would you want them to sit staring at your sleeping child?

mumsanutter · 12/11/2008 19:32

Which thread has upset you??

What would you want your childminder to do while your child is asleep??

KatyMac · 12/11/2008 19:32

Can I ask what we are allowed to do

Shopping?
Washing up?
Cooking?
Hoovering?
NVQ work?
EYFS Assessments & observations?
Risk Assessments?
Food Hygiene records?
Incident Reports?

dustystar · 12/11/2008 19:32

clearly bored of tormenting people on the SN board then

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 12/11/2008 19:32

god forbid I have to put DS3 with a childminder any time soon and he's their only mindee - he can still sleep between 2 and 3hrs in one go in the afternoon.......the poor bloody childminder having to sit and stare at my son while he sleeps!!!

fivecandles · 12/11/2008 19:32

'What do you think teachers get up to?'

Teaching?

I'm one of them. If I was teaching and Mumsnetting I'd be disciplined. If I did it repeatedly I'd be sacked.

I'd be outraged if my kids told me their teachers were doing this too. They're being paid to do a job and they have a legal responsibility to be in loco parentis.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 12/11/2008 19:34

Katy - if you were my CM I'd be happy for you to do all of the above if you had my DS's as charges - I'd even let you have a cup of coffee and a quick read of the paper if they were engrossed in something quite happily on their own

hullygully · 12/11/2008 19:34

Oh come on, most teachers doss about on their sodding Blackberries all day while the kids do worksheets.

mumsanutter · 12/11/2008 19:36

My minded love the internet, they have found webkinz!! So while they are using the laptop, am I not allowed to look at the web as well (in the same room as them and sitting with them - actually webkinz is quite additive!)

fivecandles · 12/11/2008 19:37

If I personally thought that someone being paid to look after my kids (childminder, nursery nurse, teacher) was using the time they should be spending supervising my kids on the Internet I would whip them out and report them. Sorry.

And actually this has really put me off ever using childminders and I'd warn other people considering it. I find it shocking.

'Oh come on, most teachers doss about on their sodding Blackberries all day while the kids do worksheets. '

Not any I've met. Never. Not one and I've been teaching for over 10 years. Certainly not my kids' teachers and if they did I would complain and want them disciplined.
