Childminder's dog has bitten DD

Last week my childminder's dog bit my DD on the face. What would you do? I feel like I have lost trust in their judgement and allowing this to happen.

The dog shouldn’t have been in the communal room. End of. I thought cm dogs always had to be separate

I was just about to post exactly the same scenario.... it was an unfortunate accident.

That may be, but the point is the dog should not have been in the same rooms and this would have avoided the whole thing. For the dogs care and safety as well.

A unfortunate accident which could easily been avoided, and was the childminder’s fault! You don’t need any information on the incident, whether the dog was provoked etc. It is enough to know that the child was able to get near the dog, which then bit her.

No, there's no particular rule on that, CMs just have to risk assess and obviously keep children safe.

A childminder near me was shut down when during her ofsted inspection the dog was growling and chewing the children's toys, jumping all over them.

I do think, if you choose a childminder with a dog, it's not reasonable to expect that the dog will be separate from the children all the time, that just won't happen in a family home.
Even with the childminder supervising a child could easily tread on the dog or fall over it and risk being nipped.

That suprises me

I would never leave a child alone with a dog. Even one I know and trust

as you just never know

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 29/03/2025 21:59

It can be hard enough to find a childminder without sifting out all the ones with pets! I've had three different childminders in the past. Two had a dog and the other had cats. First one was a wee yappy thing but it was kept away from the children. Second had cats which were in and around the children, but my kids were used to cats as we've always had them too. The 3rd had a big sweetheart of a thing, can't remember the breed, but it was around the children and they all loved him.

The last one was just DC3 and they were older. The lady was already minding DC when she got the dog as a puppy.

There's a difference between keeping them separate and leaving a child alone with a dog.

Just because a childminder has a dog doesn’t mean the dog will be left alone with the children. Childminders are home from home settings, if they weren’t allowed pets such as dogs there would be far, far less childminders.

pollymere · 30/03/2025 13:08

Unfortunately the CM should have ensured that this couldn't happen. I hope your DD is okay mentally and physically OP. That's a traumatic thing to occur.

Why? There are two sides to every story and the opening post gives absolutely no context.

Exactly this.
What breed is the dog?
What happened before the 'bite'?
Was it a bit or a nip?
Was there blood?
Is it the first time the dog has done this?

Many questions to ask before deciding to kill someone's business or fur baby

I take it you don't have pets?

You should get one. You are the one missing out!

Oldbutstillachild · 03/04/2025 13:52

I could never allow my children to go there again, personally. I would also report the incident to Ofstead, and also the police unless there was a very good reason not to. Even good, loving dogs have the potential to kill a child. I couldn't take that risk.

I have lots of animals but none of them are babies. That’s part of the problem, people treating their animals like they are children. They are not.

You can play pretend all you want, your sanity is your own concern, but that doesn’t make it true.

They’re just pets.

They're not "just" anything. They are very special and important to me. They're the best furbabies in the whole wide world!! I'm very sane actually!

Why do you care how people feel about their dogs? Does it matter what people call them? No of course it doesn't.

Yes, it does matter actually. People treating their dogs like their “babies” and pretending they are part of their family is exactly why we have so many badly behaved dogs and dog attacks have become so prevalent.

Yep. Weird and pathetic.
